Bristol / Kingsport KOA, Blountville, Tennessee

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $49.00
Overall Rating:

Pleasant overnight stay on our return from Gettysburg to Georgia. Park staff were very helpful in changing reservations and were super friendly and helpful upon our arrival. Park is a bit off the highway, so no road noise. But, there are a few hilly, twisting, narrow roads getting to the site...and at the campground as well. Nothing too terrible however. Typical KOA where everything worked as advertised...the Motel 6 for RV overnight stays. We camped at Bristol / Kingsport KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

Drummer Boy Camping Resort, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $60.00
Overall Rating:

Have been here twice and we do see a rough edge building here. Fairly tight roads, lots of weeds, tons of trash built over holiday week (4th of July), dusty roads, road noise...but also friendly people, activities and lots to do in the area. So I'm somewhat conflicted. So is it a good campground or not? I do think that it is a good place, but one that needs an overhaul to bring it up to current standards in order to draw folks from outside the local area. We camped at Drummer Boy Camping Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Of course the National Battlefield should occupy a few days. If you can, ride bikes from culps hill, to the far side of big round top, and then around through the peach orchard back to the National Cemetary. You will learn a lot. Also, Frederick in MD has a wonderful downtown and river walk area...try it.

Moutardier COE, Leitchfield, Kentucky

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

COE campground a bit off the beaten path. Narrow, long road from Interstate to get there but the park is fairly close to Mammoth Cave NP. And for that reason alone the campground is a good choice. We were given a 'drive-in' site which meant we were essentially camping in the road with our slide out in the roadway. Odd site! The gentleman on duty offered to give us a new site but we were OK for just two nights. Campground has dozens, and dozens of non-electric sites on the lakefront that seem to go unused. If you want to boondock these sites have stunning views. By the way...the lake and area is gorgeous! We camped at Moutardier COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Visit Mammoth Cave NP and do a cave tour. Incredibly interesting and a cool 55 degrees underground. Refreshing when it was in the mid-90s above ground. We were unable to cell coverage or TV stations while at the campground.

Yellowstone Grizzly RV Park, West Yellowstone, Montana

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $75.00
Overall Rating:

A very nice RV park in a beautiful area. Overall everything about this park was great. Bathrooms were clean and all facilities were well maintained. Internet became unusable around 5PM as that was when everyone returned from their day in Yellowstone. But overall that was just a minor inconvenience in what was a wonderful stay. Free cappuccino in the morning at the front office was a nice touch. We camped at Yellowstone Grizzly RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Start your visit at the visitors center in West Yellowstone. Lots of information about Yellowstone and the surrounding area. The museum in West Yellowstone is well worth a visit to see how visitors arrrived around the turn of the century and ventered into the Park by horse drawn carriage. There are 2 small grocery stores in the city. Prices really weren't bad and they had a good selection. We loved Wild West pizza. Delicious pizza and good prices. Diesel is readily available in the city.

7th Ranch RV Camp, Garryowen, Montana

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $55.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed at 7th Ranch on the way back from Yellowstone and what a wonderful campsite. Staff was friendly and check-in was quick and easy. Escorted to site although campground isn't terribly big. Still, the personal attention was much appreciated. Restrooms were big and immaculate. The attention to detail was apparent throughout the campground. And free ice cream bars on check-in. I appreciated that after the drive. Campground was windy while we were there as you are on a big open hill in Montana. Careful putting out your awning and then going out to tour. Could see Little Bighorn area (Reno battle area) from our site. We camped at 7th Ranch RV Camp in a Fifth Wheel.

Crawfordsville KOA, Crawfordsville, Indiana

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

Fairly typical KOA with a bit of a rough edge. Folks at check-in were very friendly and accommodating. We had our choice of sites as the campground was fairly empty. Our site was level but looked like it could use a bit of gravel. Easy to navigate the campground but there was a dip in the road on exit that we were concerned about. No problems though. As this was just an overnight it was sufficient and we had enough OTA tv channels to keep us entertained. No cable at the campground as the provider had pulled the plug...so to say. We camped at Crawfordsville KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

Lake Griffin State Park, Fruitland Park, Florida

Date of Stay: January, 2018 - $26.00
Overall Rating:

Small but nice state park near 'The Villages' area. We stayed here 2 nights and found it very comfortable. We had good neighbors and found the park quiet. Many campers were tenters, pop-ups, and smaller trailers as the CC is somewhat small. We were met by friendly staff upon arrival who warned us that some kids were being kids in the park. So that said to us that (1) the staff cared and (2) they were looking to take care of things. The roads here are narrow and the turns are tight. We have a 30 ft fifth wheel so we had no problem except that our site sloped dramatically transversely across the site challenging our auto-level system. We did see a large toy-hauler struggle after dark. Arrive in the daytime is my suggestion. We camped at Lake Griffin State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

There are several trails around the campground, including to the lake where you can rent canoes, kayaks and such in season. Also, 'The Villages' is a few miles north and there is always something going on in and around the villages. We had a nice dinner there and listened to an outdoor concert on one of the town squares in the villages. Do it...worth the time. Fun!

Anastasia State Park, St Augustine, Florida

Date of Stay: December, 2017 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

This is a popular state park for a reason. It is a true gem in a wonderful location. We were in Coquina loop which is about 1/4 mile from the state park beach. Other beaches in the area (St Augustine, Vilano) are within a few miles drive and allow dogs on the beach. No dogs on the state park beach. Staff was very friendly and they do a great job in maintaining the park. We observed that as campers left a site park staff were there almost immediately to clean and prepare the site for others. Very cool! There is a small store at the beach that sells some essentials and firewood. Sites at the park vary in length but a very large rig will be challenged to fit in most sites. Select your site carefully and look closely at the length listed on the state reservation website. The sites however do tend to be very roomy in width and very private. Overall a nice park in a great place. We camped at Anastasia State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

St Augustine during the Christmas holiday is simply wonderful. From the Christmas boat regatta to the festival lights around the city it is a great place during the holidays. We visited Cathedral Basilica of St Augistine and had a wonderful visit with a very friendly and informative parishioner (Doris). The parish itself dates back to the time of the founding of the city (1565 or so). The cathedral itself isn't as old but was still mighty impressive and a must visit location.

Rainbow Springs State Park, Dunnellon, Florida

Date of Stay: November, 2017 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

Small but lovely Florida State Park. As all Florida State parks that we have stayed in, this one was an excellent value with large, private sites and well maintained facilities. We were in site 8, loop C and it could not have been better. Lots of trees ringed the crushed gravel site. Campground was almost full but still very quiet, probably because the sites are big and there is good vegetation between sites...at least in loop C. Loop A is much more open and has less privacy. Loops B and C have great, very private sites. We rode our bikes to the river and watched a kayak rescue class. How fun! Park is about 15 miles from I-75 but was worth the drive...even for an overnight. We camped at Rainbow Springs State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Pointes West Army Rec Area (Military FamCamp), Appling, Georgia

Date of Stay: November, 2017 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

Upon arrival you get excited as the entrance and drive in is very pretty. And overall the park is just that, quite lovely overall. We were assigned 2M site and we dutifully worked to back into that site even though it was less than desirable. 2M is very squeezed between two neighbors, without a table, without a grill and with a fire pit that sits way too near the camper slide to use. The site was going to be too small to entertain our grandchildren for the day. So we went up to the office. Staff went out of the way to help us and came up with a solution. So, the structure of the campground caused a serious problem that was addressed and resolved by a great campground employee. We are calling it a win overall. Would add that you have to be careful when assigned a site...some are very good, some are serious 'turd sandwiches'. 2M is one of those 'Turd sandwiches'. The sewer tops are way above the ground and the pipes are too large for standard screw ends on RV 'stinky-slinkies', so you are gonna smell your dump process. Have fun. Ha! There are several children's parks around the facility. They are immaculate and state of the art. Very nice. My granddaughter just loved the playground. We camped at Pointes West Army Rec Area (Military FamCamp) in a Fifth Wheel.

Reed Bingham State Park, Adel, Georgia

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

As we checked in we were met by two friendly folks behind the counter who greeted us and were more than accommodating with our request to move to a 50 amp site. Campground is easy to get to, easy to get around in and the sites are large and well maintained. There are a good number of pull thru sites for overnighters coming off of I-75. At the check in there is a camp store with a fairly good selection of items including state park and Reed Bingham hats and t-shirts. Got about 20 OTA tv stations. What's not to like here. Overall a super overnight stay. We camped at Reed Bingham State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground, Lake Buena Vista, Florida

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $89.00
Overall Rating:

All sites at Ft Wilderness are small. Everyone knows that but all accept being super crowded as you are at Disney. Some sites are however ridiculously small. Designed in 1971 to accommodate 1965 14ft Scotty rigs we all know getting into the sites can be a challenge. I watched a 40ft fifth wheel take about an hour and a half getting into a 300 loop site in the dark. Great entertainment for me...bad for him. Getting into some sites - like 357 - can however be a significant emotional event. We were assigned to site 357 as we had pets and had requested the outside loop. Sites 357 and 359 are outside loop on a curve to the right as the loop ends to the road. As a result the end of the way too short sites angle toward each other and literally become one...literally!! The trailer in 359 was so close that our neighbor was sitting out one day in the only space he had to sit and he could have put his feet up on our door steps. How fun is that? I like meeting my neighbors, but really, at over $100 a night with tax to be able to hear your neighbor snore thru the night...ridiculous. One last horror story. We got a ticket by the Disney police because my truck had 2 wheels off the pavement so we moved the truck and the golf cart onto pavement. This was so small however that we had to walk sideways to get into the golf cart so we could back it out into the street so that we had space to roll up the canvas sides of the cart. We took it all in stride as we love Disney but at some point Disney has to understand that just because people love your characters they will reach a point where they get disgusted and feel taken advantage of and look for other forms of entertainment. There are a lot of campgrounds out there!

Do not, do not, ever, ever, stay in any preferred loop at the Fort (particularly 300). I will never again stay in any preferred loop. Stand your ground. If you don't like your site don't take no...demand another site even when they say they are completely full...they are always full so they can always say that. We camped at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground in a Fifth Wheel.
