Wildcat Mountain State Park, La Farge, Wisconsin

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

Nice park on Wildcat "Mountain" above the Kickapoo River which is a great river to canoe or kayak. There is about a 10% grade on the road going into the main family campground. I would give this park a 10 if there were a few electric sites for anyone. However, the only electric sites other than the accessible site in the family campground are in the equestrian campground . There are 72 sites total; the inventory is as follows: 25 sites in the family campground. 8 that can handle larger rigs and another 7 that could accommodate a small trailer the remaining 10 are tent only. 20 cart in sites that are obviously tent only 24 Equestrian sites, these are located down the hill from the family campground about a mile north of the park entrance. 3 group sites two with a capacity of 25 and one that will hold 50. We camped at Wildcat Mountain State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Bring a canoe or kayak or rent from one of the local outfitters and paddle the Kickapoo. The most scenic portion of the river is between landings 5 and 7 and will take about an hour.

Merrick State Park, Fountain City, Wisconsin

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $26.00
Overall Rating:

The 322 arce park is located on the Mississippi backwaters and has a boat launch and separate canoe/kayak launch. There are also very reasonably priced canoe/kayak rentals. The park also includes a nature center, 2 miles of hiking trails, picnic areas, a playground, canoe/kayak trail and excellent fishing opportunities. There are 3 campgrounds with a total of 65 sites. There are 22 sites with electric, all are in the north campground where the shower building is also located. The south campground has 35 sites, 18 on the water and 10 with water access across the road. The only downside is that there is a very active rail line running close to the park. You can actually feel the ground vibrate in the north campground. However, we stay here every Memorial day and after a while you get used to the rail traffic. We camped at Merrick State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

There is a Kwik Trip in Fountain City that has a small selection of grocery items. If you need more there is a Walmart and a few other grocers in Winona 20 minutes away. The park is located on the Great River Road which is worth a checking out. There are small towns with shops and wineries along the route. Alma, about 15 minutes north has a viewing point for one of the the lock and dams and great views from Buena Vista city park high on the bluff.
