Fort Stockton RV Park, Fort Stockton, Texas

Date of Stay: January, 2019 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

The word "oasis" will fit upon arrival at this park after driving through the mind-numbingly endless west Texas desert. Don't expect the Hilton-because it's the desert-but this park is a popular RV stop. A leisurely walk through the grounds during our stay sported travelers from over 15 different states, most of them just spending the night on their way somewhere else. Over the years the owners have established a small forest of trees and grass in what otherwise is an expanse of cactus and mesquite. Beware the near constant desert wind (awnings can be lost in a matter of minutes!). Check the list of amenities again on the website-they really do have everything anyone would ever need. Meals at the restaurant are simple, fairly priced and good. Management is friendly, accommodating and experienced. Our pull-thru required some leveling but the utilities were conveniently located and reliable. Water pressure was strong. Cable TV was excellent quality and hookup to the park Wi-Fi was instantaneous (without password) and effective. The access road is a washboard though, dumpsters are located at only one section of the park and road noise from nearby I-10 is a fact. The park shows its age, but management does a great job of staying ahead of the power curve. You won't find a better stop in the west Texas desert! We camped at Fort Stockton RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Junction/North Llano River RV Park, Junction, Texas

Date of Stay: January, 2019 - $37.00
Overall Rating:

Yeah, okay; it's a little run down but for a wintertime overnight stop, this park offers everything you need to take care of business. In the winter the trees are all skeletons-probably very nice and verdant during peak season. Everyone gets an escort to their site and the park host was friendly and accommodating. Roads and sites are hard packed dirt but site #53 was level without augmentation. Our pull-thru had overhead protection, a picnic table on a paver patio, fire ring and a stand-up BBQ. Cable TV was grainy but came with a large selection of channels and, given that we could get zilch over the air, was a whole lot better than nothing! Our Verizon hot spot did NOT work here but the park Wi-Fi was more than adequate for our Internet needs. Utilities were well located and water pressure was strong. Situated along the Llano River, it is quiet, open with access to the river, the stars overhead, some trees and ample space between most camp sites. An old playground is here as well as a fenced in dog area. With propane on premises, laundry and showers available, it appears there is no basic need left unaddressed. We camped at Junction/North Llano River RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Hwy 21 RV Park and Storage, Bastrop, Texas

Date of Stay: January, 2019 - $29.00
Overall Rating:

Hospitality is never unwelcome. If you can't find a place to stay and you need to be close by the Bastrop area, be grateful for space at the inn. We certainly were. The owners of this park do live on the property, are accommodating, friendly and have invested in a clean modern laundry, rec room, bathroom/showers and on-site propane (especially important in the winter months). There is RV storage space and personal storage available on premises for reasonable rent. Other amenities are planned, but as of now, this is what we found: The roads may have been nicely done when first built (asphalt covered with fine gravel) but already have pot holes and wash-outs. During rainy days, the access road was a series of ponded ruts. Night lighting is present but sparse and highway noise is constant. Our pull-through site was spacious but sloped. There was no picnic table, patio, BBQ or cable TV. Utilities were reliable but the sewer hookups for pull-through sites were at the rear of the site, requiring extension hose for those with mid-point connections. Back-in sites appeared to be more centrally placed. Free Wi-Fi is limited to 1GB (I was unable to connect). Secure Internet connection is available for a price. During our ten-day off-season stay, overnight travelers were few-everyone else was a permanent resident, a few modern rigs but many relics with yard clutter. Permanent residents were quiet and well-behaved. Bottom line: this is a safe place to park with caring management and all the necessities-but obviously still a work in progress. We camped at Hwy 21 RV Park and Storage in a Fifth Wheel.

Bastrop State Park, Bastrop, Texas

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

What is NOT here: golf course (it has gone back to Mother Nature because the vendor could not operate it profitably), Wi-Fi, cable TV, propane, rec room, laundry, camp store or casino. There used to be fishing available but a spring flood burst the earthen dam and . . . . no more pond! What IS here: all the other stuff listed, to include showers (a new, modern air conditioned bath house/restroom complex). Yes, there are fire ants in Texas! They don't seek you out unless you temp them with food left outdoors or park on top of their home. As for traffic noise from highway 71, yes it is a factor-an important one if you have difficulty sleeping. With all that said, here are the facts: the Piney Hill camping area is farther from highway 71 than Copperas Creek camping area, has the only full hook-up pull through sites in the park, provides the largest, most private vistas from your window, is a short distance from the swimming pool, park headquarters, playground and hiking trails. For the money you will not find a more expansive private campsite anywhere in the Bastrop area. Our Verizon hotspot worked flawlessly and we got numerous clear channels OTA. Utilities are convenient, reliable and work fine. There is only one set of dumpsters serving the camping area, making it a hassle if you park a long distance away. It is true that the park police patrol all camping areas regularly throughout the day and night. This place is a bargain! We camped at Bastrop State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

North Shore Park, Bastrop, Texas

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

We occupied the only one of two remaining pull-through site in the park. It did not have a sewer connection. Five previous pull-through sites (we've stayed before) have been converted to a type of "cabin" camping experience using new airstream trailers with full hook-ups in highly developed sites (shade, deluxe fire pit, deluxe gas grill island, table & Adirondack chairs, wheelchair accessible and overhead night lighting). Bottom line: this is an intentional nod to those looking to stay without RV's. It's a legitimate Lower Colorado River Authority decision, given that most people visit the park to fish, boat or swim. As RV'ers we, however, will not return. Regarding our site, water pressure and electricity were reliable but heavy use of leveling blocks were required to prevent an over-stroke error on my automatic leveling system. Site was clean with fire ring, picnic table, shade and plenty of asphalt space to park our RV and two cars. We received several high definition over-the-air TV stations and our Verizon hot spot provided good service. Bathroom was generally clean but unheated, making showers in December a trying experience. No laundry. Lack of sewers will define the park as a place for only short-term RV stopovers, holiday and weekend use. That said, this is a beautiful, quiet area and the park is well-maintained. We camped at North Shore Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Camp Tonkawa Springs RV Park, Garrison, Texas

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

Privacy, a quiet rest for the night, natural beauty, wildlife and the majesty of the tall pines of east Texas. This park was rejuvenating. It is so different from the run-of-the-mill Commercial Park- spacious, treed, laid-back and clean, functional facilities without the flash and bluster of fancier places. We were so far from the noisy roadways and Interstates; we slept deeply and well for the first time in a long time under the most resplendent display of stars in the darkest of skies. Our pull-through site was long and relatively level (minor adjustments only). We pulled sixteen channels in high definition TV over the air. Water and electricity were reliable. No working Wi-Fi, but our Verizon hot spot covered both computer and phone needs. There is a rec center, pavilion, hiking trails, bath house, laundry and restrooms. We could see only wilderness out our windows in site 14 A. It was like dry camping in a 38 ft. RV. If you don't like the outdoors, you will want to pass this one by. If you do like the outdoors, try to find a way to stop at Camp Tonkawa Springs. We camped at Camp Tonkawa Springs RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Cinnamon Creek RV Park, Minden, Louisiana

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $37.00
Overall Rating:

Wonderful are full hook-ups, strong water pressure, a level site, laundry, showers and excellent cable TV! What else could you ask for? It certainly looks good on the website. I'm not a travel snob, but it's possible to have all these amenities and still come up short. It depends on what you are looking for and it's why they offer neckties in different colors. Basically, this park is filled with full-time residents (albeit quiet and well-behaved). There are only five or six out-in-the-open gravel pull-throughs stacked on top of one another for traveling RVers. "EZ Check-in by phone" (as advertised in the office window) means reserve in advance by phone . . . because we could find no live manager on premises during our stay. The campground is located next to a truck stop and major crossroads. There is no privacy between overnight sites and the road noise from the busy intersection nearby is endless. While I wouldn't classify the park as run down, the full-time residents are "comfortable." My listed price reflects a Good Sam discount (it must be the ambiance). Please don't take these comments as sour grapes-our stay was an adequate one night stay in every respect. We camped at Cinnamon Creek RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Benchmark RV Park, Meridian, Mississippi

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

Let's get one thing straight: this is an overnight stay on your way to someplace else. There are no trees, no privacy, no Wi-Fi unless you are near the office and no seclusion from traffic noise. It's a small park with tight turns and gravel roads with potholes that collect water when it rains. What the park does have is level concrete pads with full hookups, good water pressure, cable TV, pet walk area, laundry, showers, reasonable pricing and attentive management. The park has decided to position itself as a clean, functional, convenient overnight stopping place-and it fits that bill perfectly. Would I stay here again? If I was tired of driving, needed a clean place to spend the night and didn't want to spend an arm and a leg-you bet! One note: if you are using your GPS to find the park, know that it is located in Marion, NOT Meridian, MI. We camped at Benchmark RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

DeSoto State Park, Fort Payne, Alabama

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

Definitely follow the driving instructions listed on the website and do not let your GPS bring you to the park. Even so, the park is not exactly convenient to the Interstate; however, it is a better RV park than run-of-the-mill and that should weigh in your decision. As others have commented, full complement of hook-ups, 45 lbs. water pressure at site #52, could not get any Wi-Fi there and despite the asphalt parking pad, my automatic leveler lifted a side wheel slightly off the ground in order to achieve neutrality. Park is gated at night (with entrance key pad), with ample space between camp sites and plenty of trees. Drainage is excellent in the wet winter months. Try to arrive during daylight hours, as this park is in the boonies with narrow roads and no lighting until you actually arrive at the park. Diesel is available only 3 miles down the road. The restaurant has excellent fare, friendly service and reasonable prices. I enjoyed country fried chicken and my wife went for the 12 fried shrimp, all for $38.00. Salad bar was nice and fresh. All-in-all this is a peaceful, quiet and wooded campground with excellent facilities. We stayed one night while on the road to elsewhere. We camped at DeSoto State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Flaming Arrow Campground, Whittier, North Carolina

Date of Stay: November, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Looking for a touring location central to the North Carolina side of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park? Does being nestled down in a depression surrounded by tall trees on all sides sound good? Enjoy full hook-ups, cable, Wi-Fi that works, shade trees, paved roads and privacy from highways without the high fees of a "gated" concrete parking lot with a faux country club? Could it be that easy access to restrooms, laundry, swimming pool, playground, office and other common use areas is important to you? If you answered most of these questions "yes," look no further than Flaming Arrow Campground! Regarding previous comments: Yes, the roads are single lane but they are also paved, one-way and wide enough for any size rig to navigate without unhooking toads - unless you got your driver's license from sending in cereal box tops. Management lives on premises and is Johnny-on-the-spot for any issues you might raise, including reasonable special requests and helping every guest position for their rig's unique requirements. The city of Cherokee is just 4 miles away and the owner of the park knows how to direct you to any place or anything you might need. Like all RV parks, there were some detractors: only one dumpster to serve the entire park, only two washers and two dryers and smoke from burning leaves during the off-season (which was our choice) are all I can complain about. We stayed here two months. We camped at Flaming Arrow Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

We never were without something new and different to do during a two-month stay. Surrounding small towns (Bryson City, Sylva, Franklin, Dillsboro) and festivals are charming, Biltmore Estates is a must and Cherokee itself was interesting and informative. Great Smoky Mountain National Park is not the only choice!

Manchester KOA, Manchester, Tennessee

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

If you are one of those people who requires absolute quiet, drive on by (the campground is located parallel to busy Interstate 24). If you are looking for an inexpensive overnight stop, drive on by. This is a multi-faceted recreational park. The campground was gaily decked out for Halloween as we were escorted to our campsite. There are significant amenities here for families, tent campers, cabin guests and RV'ers. Firewood sales, propane sales, movie nights, bouncy house, tricycle track, fishing pond, two large tee pees with group pavilion, two amenity levels of cabins, a train ride for kiddos, camp store and gift shop. RV sites range from simple gravel pull-throughs to concrete pads with elaborate patios. Water pressure was strong & reliable. Park Wi-Fi was strong. Restrooms, showers and laundry were immaculate. The park is nicely forested and shade is abundant. These niceties are not free, but since we didn't use most of them, $52.87 per night for a simple gravel campsite was not a compelling value. Other observations: a single dumpster for the entire park; pull-through site at #12 was not level, cable TV picture quality was poor, and utilities location was far apart. Management was friendly. We camped at Manchester KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

Cypress Lakes RV Park, Calvert City, Kentucky

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $29.00
Overall Rating:

This is definitely an eclectic park! It contains what appears to be an old closed boat marina and open RV storage around a stunningly beautiful fishing lake with decorative fountain. There are two rustic cabins situated near the lake. There are few vacant sites. The property looks like a combination mobile home park, RV Park and gypsy encampment. Actual permanently located mobile homes and modern RVs on developed well-maintained sites sit next to 60's vintage RV's cluttered with belongings and cobbled up structures. This is not an indictment-people must make choices-but this is not your typical RV Park. That said, our site was level, clean and all utilities were convenient and reliable. Water pressure was 50 PSI at site #21 and it sported a concrete patio, picnic table and fire ring. Space was plentiful, trash dumpsters were reasonably close by and OTA TV reception was limited but clear. Laundry and showers were clean. There is a well-outfitted rec room and a nice children's playground. Propane is available on site. We stayed two nights. We felt safe and welcome. Redman Creek Campground COE, Wappapello, Missouri

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $12.00
Overall Rating:

This is wilderness camping with all the amenities! Our site was surrounded with trees and the Great Outdoors. Distance between sites at the pull-through area was spacious (as an Army Corps of Engineers project, making money takes a back seat to providing a quality camping experience! ). The view out the right side of our coach was all nature with no campers in sight. With a senior pass, a full-hookup drive through site is discounted from $24 to $12 per night. The campgrounds are divided between an east side and a west side. There are only three pull-throughs in the entire campground and they are all on the west side. Utilities were conveniently located and reliable (water pressure was 50 PSI at site #10). No Wi-Fi but our Verizon hot spot worked fine. OTA TV was limited but with clear reception. Dumpsters were reasonably plentiful and the restrooms/showers were old but clean. Each site had a fire ring and picnic table, asphalt drive and a graveled patio area. There was plenty of space to park a tow vehicle plus one more vehicle (boat, etc.). We were pleased to see the Butler County sheriff patrolling the campground at night. We stayed three nights. We camped at Redman Creek Campground COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Missouri RV Park , Mountain Grove, Missouri

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $27.00
Overall Rating:

Sometimes appearances can be deceiving. Upon first glance the park looked old and run down. The old asphalt/gravel roads were WAY beyond needing upgrade and navigation around them was not easy with my 38 foot RV. Upon arrival there was nobody on duty because we came in before posted September office hours of 3:30 pm to 6:00 pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday. There was no evidence of a park host, so we selected our own campsite. The pool was closed for the season, as was the rec center. There was only one dumpster in the park. After selecting our pull-through, what looked like an old abandoned terraced site surprised us, being both level and long. Utilities were conveniently located with 50 lbs. water pressure at site 10 c and Wi-Fi was good. OTA TV reception was also good. Taking a closer look, the grounds had been recently mowed and were dotted with old growth trees. It had a rural charm. Upon visiting the office after the receptionist arrived, I found her to be friendly and helpful. Laundry and rest rooms were spotless. This park will never pass for a premier RV park, but it's convenient, clean, friendly and provides all the basics. We stayed for two nights. We camped at Missouri RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Santa Fe Park, Chanute, Kansas

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $10.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here to visit friends-luxury was not our objective. It's basically a barren parking lot with a few trees. Pull-through sites on east side of the ball field, back-ins on the west. As an RV park, this isn't much above a Wal-Mart parking lot. Services are minimal (no sewers, no picnic table, unclean and cramped rest & shower rooms, no laundry, located on a busy/noisy highway intersection) but each site does have a trash can and there is a dump station premises. That said, the dominant theme here is that the FIRST TWO NIGHTS ARE FREE! This is related to the unique high end Kansas RV resale & repair facility located nearby, providing a convenient overnight stay for waiting customers. The setting is a large and well-manicured city park sports complex. We were appreciative of having this opportunity. Although there is no dog park, there are acres of close cropped grass and plenty of trees surrounding the complex, a nearby large Wal-Mart store and plentiful fuel and shopping opportunities. We stayed in an asphalt pull-through site with side-by parking for our tow vehicle for two nights. Very basic, very Spartan, but would definitely do it again. We camped at Santa Fe Park in a Fifth Wheel.
