Ohiopyle State Park, Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Campground is set deep into the park. Long winding access road. Steep at the beginning. Campground is nice with sites set fairly close together and somewhat level. Pets are restricted to certain loops. Bathhouse facilities very nice and modern. Tons of hiking, great whitewater rafting, canoeing and kayaking. Possible to get potable water on way in to park at main bathhouse. Dump station also accessible on way in and out of park. We camped at Ohiopyle State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

The town of Ohiopyle is small but used to tourists. Has restaurants and outdoor gear shops. Area is really big on whitewater rafting and kayaking. Lots of hiking trails, too. No nearby supermarkets.

Blackwater Falls State Park, Davis, West Virginia

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

Really nice park. Lots of hiking trails. Lodge with restaurant which was good. Campground is open on a hill with amazing sunset views. Can be windy. Sites were not terribly level, electric only. We were there early in the season and the water was not turned on. Park staff were helpful and the office was right at the campground. The falls were beautiful and deer abound. The bathhouse looked like it was scraped and ready to be painted--I hope. It did look scruffy. We camped at Blackwater Falls State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

The town of Davis is nearby. Quite small but good supermarket, a few shops and a couple good restaurants--a bit surprising in such a rural area, but it is a tourism hub. We really loved the landscape and the area. Would have stayed longer and would come again. Easy access to the park.

Little Beaver State Park, Beaver, West Virginia

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

We were at the park very early in the season. Park does not take reservations before Memorial Day. Park was empty. The camp store was not open during our stay. Camp rangers were around, but busy with maintenance. We had no access to the camp store or firewood. That said, the park is nice. The bathhouse was well maintained. The sites were large although not all were level. There were pull throughs and back in sites. We camped at Little Beaver State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

The town of Beckley is not far away and there are grocery stores and basic shopping available there. New River Gorge National River Park is close by with amazing scenery and more trails. Visit one of their visitor centers for maps. Best entry to the park is off 307 heading north off rte 19. 307 north to 64 has some steep hills, do-able, but a little exciting heading south.

Hungry Mother State Park, Marion, Virginia

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

VA state parks are great and this is one of the best. We love this park. Great hiking trails. We stayed at the Creekside Campground. The only negative is no wifi and the sites at Creekside are muddy. When it rains, it gets messy. But the creek is delightful and the camp host and rangers are very friendly. The roads in the park are a bit tight with an exciting hairpin to maneuver. We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Do not take route 16 North. It is called Back of the Dragon and you just don't want to try it. Marion is nearby and there is an okay supermarket in town. The park restaurant is very good. I recommend the Fried Green Tomatoes and the Shrimp with Grits. Yummy. Hiking is excellent.

Shenandoah River State Park, Bentonville, Virginia

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Super park. We chose our site upon arrival. 30 amp and water in our loop. No cell or tv signal for us. Bathhouse very nice and clean with good laundry facility. We loved our site. It had a gorgeous view of the valley and mountains. Super hiking trails and close access to Shenandoah National Park. We loved the park and could have stayed for a long time with plenty of hiking left. We would stay here in this park again in a minute. It would be nice to have wifi and cell service. We camped at Shenandoah River State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Cell service was not available but there was wifi at the ranger station. 7 miles on a hilly road to get to Front Royal with shopping and cell signal. Very nice hiking trails throughout the park.

Mahlon Dickerson Reservation, Jefferson Township, New Jersey

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

It was early in the season and the water wasn't turned on yet. The park is really nice. Good hiking trails. We did not use showers, but they looked fine. We reserved site 11 but a tree blocked access and we switched to site 7 which was very nice. Following directions to access the park, we came from a very steep road and it was a bit too exciting. The ranger laughed knowingly. We camped at Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in a Travel Trailer.
