Palisades Senior RV Park (55+ park), Gunnison, Colorado

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $46.00
Overall Rating:

Excellent park. As good and as well-maintained a set of full hookups as I've seen. Level site. Nice bunch of highly experienced campers; the majority appeared to be from out-of-state. Very popular campground. "No vacancy" sign posted entire 3 nights that we were there and campground looked full to me. Mostly long-term, one, two or three month summer residents. Sometimes a week opens up between stays so worth calling to check like we did and were pleasantly surprised. Park opens @ May 1st and closes @ mid-September. Waiting list for next summer already has 16 people on it. New park managers will take over next season. Current park managers have been there for 8 season and have superbly managed the facilities. 5 mph speed limit closely enforced. Very quiet park; sometimes you can even hear the cows moo in a nearby field. We hope to return for a longer stay. We camped at Palisades Senior RV Park (55+ park) in a Fifth Wheel.

Tucumcari KOA, Tucumcari, New Mexico

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $43.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed one night westbound with our 34' fifth wheel. Campground was nearly full at end of May. Staff escorted us to a gravel site that was basically level and long enough to stay hooked up. Full hookups (we used 50 amp, water and sewage). Did not use wifi. Older, tired-looking campground similar to many KOA's (check out the ancient, weathered basketball goal) but this one is well-situated for I-40 travelers with easy access to the interstate and without much competition in the area. Nearby highway noise was not a problem. Nice staff that served supper and breakfast for a reasonable price in their little cafe. Would stay again if passing through the area. We camped at Tucumcari KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

Foss State Park, Foss, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

Loved this park. Enjoyed a one night stay at site 6 at Cedar Point right on the lake. The Park Manager is very nice. Had a pull through grass/dirt/gravel site and stayed connected with our 34' fifth wheel. Very level which kind of surprised me. Water was available and we used 50 amp electricity. Nicely shaded by large trees. Like most state parks sewage was a dump station. Really couldn't have been more pleased unless it would have been staying longer. It looked like the site at the very end, I think site 10 was the best site at Cedar Point. Definitely would like to return. We camped at Foss State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

By the Lake Rv Park, Ardmore, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $44.00
Overall Rating:

Top notch park. Plenty of room to navigate inside the park. Long, level concrete pull-through's. Clean. New, water/electrical (we used 50 amp) and sewer hookups. Nice staff. Pretty much as good as it gets as far as non-destination rv parks go. We did not use wifi/cable or the facilities. We were westbound and only stayed one night. Excellent park. Hope to stay again. We camped at By the Lake Rv Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Shreveport / Bossier City KOA, Shreveport, Louisiana

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $44.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed one night westbound. Pull through, gravel site. Tight, difficult turn had to back out and go around 3 times and then finally encroach on the approach to a TT across the way before finally getting into site without running over concrete edge of patio that showed signs of having been broken off many times before. Site was long enough to stay hooked up with my 34' fifth wheel but was several degrees low on one side. Full services with water and 50 amp electric but sewer pipe was unusually high. The people running the park seemed nice and it appeared to be a nice, treed, older park. Did not use wifi or facilities. I'll probably try a different park if in the area again. We camped at Shreveport / Bossier City KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

Lakeside RV Park, Livingston, Louisiana

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $46.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed one night heading west. Very well-maintained park. Appeared to have quite a few long term residents. Long, concrete pull-through with FHU (water, 50 amp and sewer). Sites were level and long enough to stay hooked up with our 34' fifth wheel. Sites were a bit close but ok. No problem with noise. Did not use wifi. Rest room and laundry facilities were very clean but had no hot water in washing machines that day. Will stay again if passing through Baton Rouge. We camped at Lakeside RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Gulf Shores / Pensacola West KOA, Lillian, Alabama

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $74.00
Overall Rating:

Fortunate to get a spot for 2 nights last minute on Memorial Day Weekend. All other campgrounds closer to the Gulf were sold out. Expensive though. Full hookups 50 amp/water/sewer. Fairly level gravel site adjacent to office. Pull through site probably long enough to stay hooked up had we so desired with our 34' fifth wheel. Staff was very nice. Drive into Pensacola wasn't too bad. Older park but ok with some nice, large trees shading some sites. Biggest problem we had was disco ball from pool area sending various colored dots dancing over our shades/curtains all night. Despite nice staff and adequate hookups I think we would prefer to try another park, if available, if we are in Pensacola area again. We camped at Gulf Shores / Pensacola West KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

Maxwell-Gunter AFB FamCamp (Military FamCamp), Maxwell Gunter AFB, Alabama

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

Spent 3 nights. Limited to those associated with military. Enjoyed our stay. Helpful staff. Concrete pad with long enough pull through that we could have stayed hooked up with our 34' fifth wheel if we had wanted. Full hookups. Sites are pretty close together and camp was full. Lots of long term residents attending training on base. Near runway but aircraft noise not an issue due infrequent flights. Occasional train whistles but nothing like USAFA for those who have stayed there. Good camp. We camped at Maxwell-Gunter AFB FamCamp (Military FamCamp) in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Kelly gate near the RV Park is often closed or limited requiring using the main gate which is Maxwell gate/Maxwell road. For those not familiar with the base it's easy to take Maxwell to the end and turn left on Kelly. Right before exiting the base at Kelly gate (and I mean right before - like a few yards before) take the right that leads across the airfield to the camp. It's a rough road especially on the turns so go slow.

Tom Sawyer's Mississippi River Park, West Memphis, Arkansas

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $44.00
Overall Rating:

Only stayed one night but really enjoyed the stay. Had a site right on the river. Nice bench near the riverbank to sit and enjoy watching the river traffic (mainly barges). Full hookups. Nice owners/managers. Level grassy/dirt site long enough to stay hooked up. There were some comments about local neighborhood in previous reviews but we found the short drive off the interstate to be fine. Park was well laid out and easy to get around. Will definitely return if in the Memphis area again. We camped at Tom Sawyer's Mississippi River Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Crossroads RV Park, Porter, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed one night. Nice owner. Gravel site level and long enough to stay hooked up. Full services. A lot of road noise all night long. We had a site in front near the road. Probably much quieter in back. Nice place. Well maintained with nice owners with only downside being the road noise. Good value. Would stay again. We camped at Crossroads RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Triple J RV Park, Russell, Kansas

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed one night. Nice folks run the place. Level, long, gravel pad... able to stay hooked up. Sewer, water and 50 amp electricity. No credit cards... check or cash only. Seemed to have quite a few long-termers. Easy on/off I-70. Road noise was not bothersome. Good place for a one night stay. Will stay there again. We camped at Triple J RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Peregrine Pines FamCamp (Military FamCamp), US Air Force Academy, Colorado

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

Excellent campground. Full hookups. Water pressure is high. Did not use Wi-Fi but Verizon worked well. About 100 sites in large pine trees. Pull-throughs and back-ins. Plenty of room in pull-through for our 34' fifth wheel. Generally pretty quiet except loud train whistles on occasion reminding me of the movie "My Cousin Vinny" at 0430 in the morning. Park requires military association or military sponsor. Was told that long term residents were limited to one month stays during the summer when camp is normally full. Advance reservations pretty essential during summer. A pretty campground in the pines... highly recommended for those that can tolerate the loud train whistles. I'll stay there again. We camped at Peregrine Pines FamCamp (Military FamCamp) in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

USAFA North gate is closest to campground (exit 156 off I-25). Commissary and BX not far away but too far to walk. Stop in Outdoor Rec near the BX to get base hiking maps. For those looking for an extreme hike visit "the incline" in nearby Manitou Springs where Olympic caliber athletes often work out. Colorado Springs is home to USOC.
