Rifrafters Campground, Fayetteville, West Virginia

Date of Stay: November, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

We spent one night. Only a half mile from Hwy 19. Looks like a nice campground with a mix of cabins, campers, and tents. The attendant was very friendly. He greeted us when we pulled in and then escorted us to the only pull-through site they have. No problem getting clear line of sight for satellite. We camped at Rifrafters Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Mountain Top Bluegrass Festival & Campground, Tarentum, Pennsylvania

Date of Stay: November, 2018 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

A well-named campground! It is located on a flat spot on top of a mountain. That gives it great views of the valley. Gravel back-in spots around the edge of the campground with pull-throughs in the center. Sites are gravel surrounded by grass that gets soggy and soft in the rain. The road to the campground is a little bumpy and curvey, but no problem to navigate. You can ignore the warning on their website that says Exit 14 (Bull Creek Road ) is closed. It is open. They provide a hose with a sewer connector to drain gray water down the side of the mountain and provide free honeypot service on Wednesdays. The restrooms/showers were closed for the winter so you have to use the residential bathroom in the basement of the caretaker's house. There is also a single washer and dryer in the basement. Friendly, helpful staff. Convenient location to see the sights in Pittsburgh and close to shopping. We camped at Mountain Top Bluegrass Festival & Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA, Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania

Date of Stay: November, 2018 - $54.00
Overall Rating:

Excellent campground. Staff was very friendly. We only stayed one night so we didn't use any of the facilities, but the campground has a lot including mini golf, dog parks, and a fishing pond. We had no trees so Satellite was no problem and we had good TMobile service. We camped at Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Lazy K Campground, Bechtelsville, Pennsylvania

Date of Stay: November, 2018 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

We were in the lower section of the campground (1/2 mile from the office and main campground). The sites are level and a good size. The staff was very friendly. Had no problems getting satellite reception and had good TMobile service. The lower section has no restrooms (other than a porta-potty) or other facilities. The office, restrooms, and dump station are located on the main campground which is on a very steep hill. The dump station is located in a dead end so you have to back up to get out of it. Fortunately, the campground provides honeypot service to drain your tanks twice a week for free. Avoid this campground if a heavy rain is expected. The small creek next to our campsite flooded late at night and created an 18-24 inch deep, fast flowing river under our camper. It washed away everything we had outside including our mat, wheel chocks, and Anderson levelers and actually moved our camper sideways a couple of inches. We had to pull out before the water got high enough to get in the camper or sweep it away. It is not fun trying to hand crank the leveling jacks when they are underwater. We ended up in a Walmart parking lot at 3 am. Others in the campground told us the same thing happened a month earlier and they had to get tow trucks to pull their campers out. We camped at Lazy K Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Nickerson Park Family Campground, Chaplin, Connecticut

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

This may have been a nice campground at one time, but it has become run down over time. Almost half of the sites are seasonal and about half of them are starting to look like trash heaps. The riverside sites are hard to back into because they have rocks and logs on the side of the road which limits your ability to turn. We got our 30-foot trailer in eventually, but I don't think a longer trailer would fit. The wifi is super slow (unusable) and we had a weak TMobile signal. We had an area of clear sky so no problem pointing our satellite dish. The staff here are really friendly, but there is definitely a communications problem. We received a call before we arrived telling us they had to shut off the water to some of the sites due to cold weather and they were going to move us to another site. We were also told that the water might be shut off to all sites at night if it was going to get below freezing. No problem. We could fill our fresh water tank and use it at night. When we arrived we found they had moved us only 3 sites down (on the same water line) and were told the water was off at all sites and it was staying off. That would have been nice to know that before we arrived. I carry water in my jerrycan across the park for 2 days only to discover the water had been turned back on. To conserve water, I decided to use the camp showers. Big mistake. They are coin operated and the coin machines don't work in some of the showers (which you only find out after losing your money). The showers are not heated (neither are the bathrooms) and once you find one that works, there is no way to control water temperature. The circuit breaker routinely flipped even though we were not using much power. The playground equipment looked old and outdated. They need to trim the low hanging tree limbs. We watched campers crack limbs when trying to drive to their site. The campground is badly in need of maintenance. If you have a choice, I'd recommend you stay somewhere else. We camped at Nickerson Park Family Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Carr Point Recreation Area (Military FamCamp), Middletown, Rhode Island

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $26.00
Overall Rating:

A very basic and small campground. There are six sites with no facilities except a single porta-potty. No trees so no problem getting satellite. Had very good TMobile service. The campground is located off of the main base, but fairly close. Very convenient location for all of the activities in Newport. We camped at Carr Point Recreation Area (Military FamCamp) in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Lots of things to do in Newport. Definitely do the 10-mile mansion tour drive (or better yet take the trolley tour). Recommend touring at least one of the mansion tours (be sure to ask for the military discount!).

Hanscom AFB FamCamp (Military FamCamp), Bedford, Massachusetts

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $26.00
Overall Rating:

Simple but nice campground. Located off base (across the runway from the base). No reservations accepted, but there were always open spots the week we stayed. Part of the campground is in the trees and part is out in the open. We were in an open spot so no problem getting satellite. TMobile coverage is good with fast speeds. We camped at Hanscom AFB FamCamp (Military FamCamp) in a Travel Trailer.

Holden Family Campground, Holden, Maine

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Great campground with plenty of amenities. Large spaces that are slightly sloped, but we had no problem getting level. The seasonal campsites are not junky like like they are at so many private campgrounds. They have games and books available in the laundry. The staff is super friendly and helpful. Clear skies for pointing our satellite dish. We got great TMobile service and the campground has really good free wifi. Great location to explore Bangor, and an easy day trip to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park (about 40 miles). We camped at Holden Family Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Clearwater Campground, Meredith, New Hampshire

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Nice campground. It is heavily wooded with campsites scattered throughout the woods. They appear to have several seasonal campers (maybe 20% of the sites), but they are not run down campers, so no issues. The staff was not unfriendly when we checked in, but not friendly either. Didn't seem to want to answer any of our questions. We are supposed to have access to the facilities at Meridith Woods Campground next door (indoor pool, game room, etc) but since we don't have a gate pass, we have to call the office everytime we want to go there so it isn't worth the hassle. Good TMobile service but because of the trees, satellite service is pretty much impossible. However, we stayed in site 125 and was able to put our dish about 75 feet away in the canoe racks area and get service. We camped at Clearwater Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Remington Park RV Campground (Military FamCamp), Fort Drum, New York

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

Huge sites. They are really long pull through sites (enough room you could put two campers in one site) and very far apart. Being on an Army Post, you have all of the services of the Post available so no problems getting supplies, food, propane, etc. Lots of hiking and biking trails throughout the Post. There is also a large playground and dog park within walking distance of the campground. No problem setting up satellite and we had very good TMobile service here. We camped at Remington Park RV Campground (Military FamCamp) in a Travel Trailer.

Punderson State Park, Newbury, Ohio

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

This is a very nice park, but the campground is OK at best. The park is very large with lots of activities including golf, archery, fishing, disc golf, hiking, etc. For the campground, be very sure to read the details of the site when reserving a spot! Most of the sites have only 20 amp hookups and no water! There are faucets throughout the campground to get water. The 20 amp circuit breaker is very weak and we had to reset our breaker many times when we used the microwave or hair dryer. They do have a few sites with 30 amp and full hookup. We were in site 154 (top of the hill near the water tower) and this area is mostly unshaded for easy satellite view and has good cell service. Other areas are not. We camped at Punderson State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We just spent a night here. A good place to stop for the night. Close to the interstate with several stores and restaurants nearby. Easy, level pull-through sites. WiFi is free with just OK speed. Nice campground with really friendly staff. The sites are grass and are close together. We had no trees so no problem with getting satellite service. We had very weak TMobile service. There is free wifi available throughout Stowe. I ended up going to the library and working during the day. It worked out very well. We camped at Gold Brook Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Branches of Niagara Campground and Resort, Grand Island, New York

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $55.00
Overall Rating:

We only spent one night here, but it seemed like a great campground. Very close to Niagara Falls and other sites. They have lots of activities for kids throughout the day including arts and crafts, fishing, a pool, mini golf, and zip lines. It is a little higher price than other campgrounds but if you have kids it would be worth it. Our site was on the outside in the trees and we had to squeeze between two trees with just enough room for the slides but it worked. No problem getting satellite or cell service. We camped at Branches of Niagara Campground and Resort in a Travel Trailer.
