Tanglewood Park Campground, Clemmons, North Carolina

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

Our second stay here. We stayed once last year for a few nights, and knew we had to come back. We stayed two weeks during an October visit with family in Winston Salem. We were lucky enough to experience Hurricane Michael - 40mph winds came through for about an hour. Lots of downed branches, but the power stayed on. And the next day, everything was cleaned up -- the staff here is really awesome. Very friendly when we showed up late for check in, helped us into our site. Showed up after the storm to make sure everything was OK. The staff all over the park is really top-notch. We like the off-leash dog park on-site; just be aware that park staff is protective of the turf in the dog park, and close it whenever there's lots of rain. Can't complain though - it really is a great dog park. Sewer hookups are at the very back of the site. We needed every inch of our 20 foot sewer hose. This RV campground is a hidden gem, one of the best municipal campgrounds we've ever visited. We camped at Tanglewood Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

We stayed during the Carolina Balloon Festival over in Statesville. Some of the other campers convinced us to go out there. And it was awesome! If you have the opportunity to attend the Balloon Festival, I highly recommend it!

Crawfordsville KOA, Crawfordsville, Indiana

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $37.00
Overall Rating:

This was an emergency, last-minute stay; we had to relocate from our planned Champaign-area RV park due to severe weather. So we arrived after dark at 9:00p. The KOA staff had sent us a text giving us our site number. Pulling into the driveway, our 40-foot 5er bottomed out on the steep incline transition. (We bottomed out on the way out the next day as well, even taking the transition kind of sideways.) With no idea where we were going, and very little lighting in the park, we did find our pull-through site, but pulled in backwards. Water and electric on the wrong side. This is a fairly tight park, and heavily wooded (probably a big plus in the heat of summer) but not what we wanted to try to navigate at dark. So we just parked it the wrong way. Signage was not helpful here. We left early the next morning at 9:00, before the office was open, so we had no interaction with any staff during our 12-hour stay. It's a good thing the park was mostly empty; it would have been hard getting out in the morning if the neighboring sites had been occupied. We camped at Crawfordsville KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

Sun Valley Campground, Chillicothe, Ohio

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed just one night, on an early-October trip from the Midwest out to the Carolinas. The office staff (probably the owner) was friendly and helpful, but that's the only real positive thing I can say. The campground was mostly empty (very late season) and quite a few run-down seasonal residents were still hanging on. Quite a few of them were up at 6:00am to start up their old pickups and go off to work. There is a large -- several acre -- fishing pond in the middle of the campground, which was smelling pretty swampy. The camping fee was $27 for two adults. The total bill came to $40 -- water is $2, electric is $2, an A/C unit is $2, and so on. I'm not sure how she got to $40. Use of the picnic table was free. Beware, our GPS (Waze) guidance to the campground based on street address was incorrect, leading us to a site about a mile further West. We were just passing the driveway when we figured that out. We camped at Sun Valley Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Oakdale KOA, Oakdale, Wisconsin

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $37.00
Overall Rating:

Our second stay at this KOA. It's a great overnight stay if it's on your way. It's a bit late in the season (October) and cold - we arrived on Saturday afternoon and the owner was leaving the office to grab some dinner, had left us detailed check-in information, including directions to our site, and all the codes we would need. I caught him as he was headed out the door, and he put his plans on hold to help me into the park, and then guided me in to my site. Park is very clean, friendly, and just off the freeway. We saw chickens wandering about (not sure where they came from) and enjoyed the kid (pygmy?) goats over in the goat pen. The dog yard is one of the better ones for a KOA, with lots of grassy area to run around. We stayed in site 16, a level pull-through site. I'll stay again if I'm in the neighborhood and need a site. We camped at Oakdale KOA in a Fifth Wheel.
