Nerstrand Big Woods State Park, Nerstrand, Minnesota

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $31.00
Overall Rating:

We choose this campground based on previous reviews. If you spend the time driving to Northfield, coming in from that way, it is much faster. Coming out from Faribault means dusty gravel roads. Coming up 35W from the south and jumping off at exit 43 means driving a county road that jack hammered our truck camper so badly, after a mile we turned around and drove up 35W to Faribault and went to the park. Folks were pleasant despite my own confusion about our reservation. This is a small heavily wooded park so anticipate heavy forest and lots of biting insects (at least for us in June). Northfield, MN. is a short drive and is a neat college town with a historic downtown. We ate dinner at the old hotel there where the menu was interesting, but the food varied from very good to very ordinary. The campground itself is pretty much in the middle of nowhere. We stayed for just one night and it was wet and damp as it had been raining. The shower was clean with plenty of hot water, but whomever takes care of the maintenance left the floor in the restroom area covered with hair which did not go down the floor drain so be sure to bring something to keep on your feet if you use the facilities. The hook-ups were water and electric, we used 30 amps, and both were fine. We stayed in this campground mid-week and it was not close to full, although that may change on the weekend. I think the sites were supposed to be gravel, but I have a hunch that was years ago as they were mostly dirt of mud. Overall this reminds us of many Minnesota state parks where demand seems outstrip value for dollar spent. We will not stay at this campground again. If you seek wooded solitude, this may be the one for you. We camped at Nerstrand Big Woods State Park in a Truck Camper.

Sugar Bottom COE, Solon, Iowa

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $10.00
Overall Rating:

Neat very large COE park, which has some sites which are walk-up only and cannot be reserved, but this park fills up, so reservations or timely arrival is recommended. We came in on a Friday late afternoon and were expected to find it full, but they had just opened the group areas to individuals to we found a spot that was level for our truck camper and were set for the weekend. Folks doing the check-in were pleasant and with a 50% discount for the same Golden pass you use at the National Parks, it meant we were staying for $10.00 a night so this was a super bargain. The sites are all electric only and ours was 30 amp which was all we needed. Lots of folks who camp here bring their boats as this campground is on the lake, although only a few sites are really right down next to the water. The stores for supplies was a good drive away so come in with a full fridge. The dump station is also a ways from some sites, so come in with empty dump and full water tanks. In addition to boating, this campground also has a small sandy beach for swimming, a good walk from many of the sites, but the entire park is nicely maintained. The shower set-up is weird except in the sections closest to the water where they all have their own entrances. In the one we used there are two side-by-side shower stalls entered to a common area by a swinging door. The problem is some folks feel the need for privacy and lock the door to the common area meaning there are two stalls, but only one person at a time using them. Not the best use of space or time. Water sports are the dominate play at this campground, but some folks were biking, and we did not take time to explore the entire area. Overall we like this park and would stay again without hesitation. We camped at Sugar Bottom COE in a Truck Camper.

Crawfordsville KOA, Crawfordsville, Indiana

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

This was just a stop-over for us in our truck camper. This campground is older and it shows its age. The folks checking us in were pleasant. We asked for and received an 30-amp and water only site. There were full hookup sites and sites with 50 amps available. The spaces in the area we stayed were not all level, but we found one that was reasonably level. The restroom and showers are next to the pool and there were many kids in the pool so the restroom was a mess with paper on the floor, etc. We really don't blame the folks in charge as they would have to be there constantly to deal it. The showers had the old galvanized plumbing which was rusty and the floor mat did not provide the most level surface, but there was plenty of hot water and good pressure. Overall this is just a stop-over campground which suited our needs for the night. It was not full and was an easy find off the Interstate, so we are satisfied and feel it was about average for the KOA chain. We camped at Crawfordsville KOA in a Truck Camper.

Levi Jackson State Park, London, Kentucky

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $29.00
Overall Rating:

We arrived at 5:00 mid-week and there were plenty of spaces. Folks at the check-in were pleasant and we had no problem finding a space. Our site had electric and water only. The dump station was easy to access. Push button showers and faucets. Kind of a pain showering given the buttons and the stalls were quite small so hard to dry off and keep clothes dry. Lots of kids and folks coming in and setting up their rigs for the weekend. Likely much more crowded then. Sites varied in terms of being level, some were way out of level. Fifty amp full hook-ups were available for a higher charge. This is a large park and feels family oriented. We would camp here again. We camped at Levi Jackson State Park in a Truck Camper.

Coming in off Interstate 75 is the faster way to the park.
