Panama City CSS Family Campground (Military FamCamp), Panama City CSS Naval Center, Florida

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

Water/50A/sewer all good. Concrete pad for RV and patio. Pretty tight, but an employee will spot you in, so your spouse won't get yelled at. Pretty quiet - right next to the marina, and pretty much the only noise was the forklift for the dry-storage boats. Park your TOAD 50 yards away in parking lot. Playground for the kids (Astro-Turf), beach with shallow swimming area. Paddle-boats and stand-up paddle-boards were only $15/day. Picnic shelters/tables, each with a grill - no reservations needed. Pretty easy in and out - about half a mile south of US98. We camped at Panama City CSS Family Campground (Military FamCamp) in a Motorhome.

Destin Army Infantry Center Recreation Area (Military FamCamp, Destin, Florida

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

Do you like your neighbors? We knew what we were signing up for tho'. "Cozy.". Everyone was pretty stand-offish - no "hey, how ya' doin'?". Plenty of non-military "guests" in the pool. Park is nice and very well maintained; complements to the staff. Not particularly comfortable with the campers - we're older, and these whipper-snappers are pretty arrogant. Not certain we'll stay again. We camped at Destin Army Infantry Center Recreation Area (Military FamCamp in a Motorhome.

Desoto Caverns Park, Childersburg, Alabama

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

A whole lot to do for kids. We were just doing an overnite, but will be back to see the caverns. Really nice park. Sites were well-gravelled. However, we were at limits on levelling jacks and had a rear wheel off the ground. A bit of jockying around got us to the point of all wheels grounded. Probably need a couple 20-ton loads of gravel on the pull-thru's and an old-hand on the front-loader. Maybe we should trade down for a non-slide (preferred) Class-C/A - no worries then. :-) We camped at Desoto Caverns Park in a Motorhome.

Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park, Jacksonville, Florida

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Water and electric good. Site mostly hard "sand" in amongst a LOT of Florida beach vegetation. Oaks, Spanish spear, et al. Roads paved but narrow - "you can do it" (if that fellow in a classic 40' Continental Class-A can do it). Beach is a 5- min. walk - or bike ride. Great place to see how things likely were 100 years ago on the Florida coast. We camped at Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park in a Motorhome.

High Springs Campground, High Springs, Florida

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Good water and power(50A). Sewer was above ground level, but we have our techniques. Site was gravel/sand - pretty level. Plenty of long-termers, but the whole place was neat and tidy. Check-in was quick and easy. Right off the interstate (75), but it was VERY quiet. Short drive to High Springs and Alachua - everything you need, but no WalMart (yay!). Could use a bit of overhead trimming, no issues tho'; I'd definitely stay again. We camped at High Springs Campground in a Motorhome.

Andalusia rv park, Andalusia, Alabama

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

Call ahead to inquire - no formal reservations. 20 pretty level spaces, all in very good condition. Any size rig you bring will have plenty of room. Grass sites with concrete patio pad. Water pressure and quality is good, 50A power good and stable, WiFi strong (cell too), QUIET, felt safe here. Walk to hardware store and grocery. Walmart about a mile. Cash or check. Couple of older fellows operate and maintain the place - pleasant conversation. Good place if you're visiting family for a few days & the price is right. Real good breakfast buffet at Fletcher's - West side of town on Rt55. Check overhead image on the address - can't see from main highway. I recommend coming in by West entrance if able. Will be staying here again when visiting family in Andalusia. We camped at Andalusia rv park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Level gravel, good voltage/stability, good water, sewer at ground level. Very nice park - pool, driving range. Get off at same exit (36) as Flying-J - about two miles away via narrow roads, so don't be in a hurry. Would definitely use this as an overnite again. (They also have propane, and small store.) Wendy Oaks RV Park, Florence, Mississippi

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $27.00
Overall Rating:

Our second stay here. Nice park. Lake. Level sites. Right on US49. No one in office - called number and left message. Picked an open site. Owner contacted later. Some long-term, but had 6-8 slots for over-night; park is clean and neat. Hookups all in good repair. Good roads. Southbound on US49, must go quarter mile south and do U-turn. Leaving in AM - southbound - go 50 yards north and do U-turn. Would stay here again. We camped at Wendy Oaks RV Park in a Motorhome.

If heading north on US49, try to find alternate route if going to Jackson to intercept I-20. The 10 miles before I-20 will tear up your rig; same goes if you're coming off I-20 and heading south.

East Texas RV Park, Greenville, Texas

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

Right on US 69, just south of Greenville. They have three sites for over-nighters, right up front - easy pull-throughs. Nice lady on the phone - and in person. Mostly monthly/long-term, but the place is neat and quiet. Don't let the chickens concern you - they're behind a fence. We just did one night, but wouldn't hesitate to stop here again if destinations dictate this route. We camped at East Texas RV Park in a Motorhome.

Overnite RV Park, Amarillo, Texas

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Ignore directions from GARMIN! Get off at Exit 75 - go north not a quarter mile - it's on the LEFT, right across from Pilot/Flying-J. All sites are pull-through. NICE park! Trees. Some sites with dog-runs. Power/water/sewer at each site - all clean and in good repair. Office folks as friendly as can be. Watch the speed-bumps near office. A bit of noise from I-40, but we had no trouble sleeping. Definitely stay here again when passing through Amarillo. We camped at Overnite RV Park in a Motorhome.

Red Rock Park, Churchrock, New Mexico

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $22.00
Overall Rating:

From what we understand, this is a "Lions-Club" sponsored City Park, on property owned by the Navajo tribe. Museum, rodeo arena, horse stalls, picnic areas, hiking trails, "main" and "west" campgrounds; we were in the main campground. Pretty much open area, with some cottonwood and mesquite trees - some sites pretty shady. All areas are dirt, some gravel, some grass, most internal roads paved; about 112-115 sites. Power and water were both good; hardware in good repair. Wish we'd had more time, as there were a couple trails we would have liked to hike. Good value - nice park, for overnite. Hookup placement caused a bit of confusion - fortunately not too full this nite. Park not designed by RV-savvy designer. Watch for gopher holes. We camped at Red Rock Park in a Motorhome.

The Canyon Motel & RV Park, Williams, Arizona

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Planned two nites - stayed four. Not half a mile from I-40 (exit 165) - no road noise; trains plentiful, but no bother, and enjoyed hearing them. Access is very easy. Fairly level sites - clean and neat - hookups convenient - sites plenty long for any rig and tow (a few back-ins might not do 40-footers). Rail car and cabooses are part of the motel, along with several, more traditional, motel units. Indoor pool. Guessing a few monthly folks (Williams is a nice place to spend a month or so), but all sites were well-kept. Seems owner/manager has rules, and all are expected to follow them - we liked how they run the place, and office staff is very engaging and professional. We plan on coming back to this area, and will be staying here again. We camped at The Canyon Motel & RV Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

This is Williams, "the last town on US66 to be bypassed by I-40." Spend some time downtown - we had a blast (good visitor's center). Also - passenger trains leave twice a day for South Rim Grand Canyon, or it's about an hour-15 drive; leave EARLY to avoid PM thunderstorms up there. August is "monsoon" season.

Arabian RV Oasis, Boron, California

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $22.00
Overall Rating:

Older park, but all we saw was in good repair. Sites were well spaced - many have shade at various times of day. Electric-water-sewer all good - 121 volts on each leg of 50A w both A/C's running. Level sites. Not much to do here except relax after a long day on the road - exactly our liking. Quarter mile south of Rt58 - eastern-most exit for Boron - easy on/off. We'd stay here again if thru this area. Nice folks, too. We camped at Arabian RV Oasis in a Motorhome.

Manchester Beach / Mendocino Coast KOA, Manchester, California

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $58.00
Overall Rating:

First: we're not KOA Club-members, so no discount of any sort. We chose this campground based on proximity to Point Arena, and the decent rating. We haven't used a KOA park since 2003, due to the "club-membership" aspect. We had forgotten the "activities" scheduled for both kids and adults, and the fact that many KOA camps are intended to be the actual destination, not a temporary stop-along-the-way.

The location of this park is outstanding: embedded within a grove of those large, gnarly pines typical of the windy California coastline, and it's less than a half-mile walk to the accessible beach (just past Manchester Beach State Park campground, for which our rig was too large). Some sites have full hook-ups, we had electric/water/cable (stable voltage/good pressure), some are dry, there is a plethora of tent sites, and better than a dozen "Kamping Kabins" (and this place was nearly full). Pool, showers/restrooms (we didn't use), 4 washers (one being used by staff to wash mop-heads), and 2 out of 5 dryers working. Tables and fire-rings at most sites, that we saw, and sites fairly close to level, although they were dirt (no gravel).

They also have a "common-area" kitchen and gathering-place: which is a nice touch, if you're with a large group. The office staff was very nice and helpful, and check-in was very easy. As with "destination" parks, the evenings were noisy, overall, however "most" of the noise subsided after 22:00 (per "rules").

The park is "challenging" for larger rigs, but should not be an issue for anyone with a few thousand miles experience. Use of the dump-station, with TOAD attached, is not advised. Hook up when you get out in front of the office, or closer to the entrance.

All-in-all, we enjoyed our stay: visits to "old haunts" in the area, and would use this park again (when compared to others we passed in the vicinity). We camped at Manchester Beach / Mendocino Coast KOA in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Visit the Point Arena Light-Station Museum. Groceries and gas in Gualala (2 stores), or if you're coming from the north, stock up and gas-up in Fort Bragg. (You'll not get your rig into the only station in Point-Arena. It's akin to "Wally's" back in Mayberry.)

CA-1 is "twisties" and up to 15% grades (switch-backs are sometimes more), and routes between CA-1 and US-101 are little more than paved-over logging roads. Make sure your equipment, especially brakes, are in top shape.

Bayside RV Park, Crescent City, California

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

A most personable and genuine couple are the managers (owners?) Over-the-phone reservation was easy, and everything known ahead of time if we arrived after the office closed. We did arrive in time, despite delay and detour for a bad accident on US101, and we settled in soon after.

Sites are gravel, level and have concrete patios; the combination power/water/cable demarcs are the high-end equipment, and on a concrete pad, as is the sewer (which is NOT higher than your tank connection, as is often the case). PLENTY of water pressure (good tasting too), and power is clean 123 VAC on each leg (30/50A).

There is also lots of room between sites. Open your slides, and there's still room for a tent or two between you and the next coach. Folks have griped about the "foghorn," we hardly heard it, and there's little to no street noise (we were here on Sunday night).

Didn't use them, but showers/restrooms were clean and up to date (we looked). A few "seasonal" folks, but every site was neat and tidy. No worries about your outside kit "growing legs" during the night, either.

This place isn't one of those "golf-resort" outfits, but it's a nice park, handy to stores, and well-priced. We'll stay here again, if we're back on the north California coast. We camped at Bayside RV Park in a Motorhome.
