About MarvMarvs

My husband and I go out in our RV as often as possible! We're looking forward to retiring and spending more time out on the road. We travel with our two very well behaved Standard Schnauzers.

Auburn Gold Country RV Park, Auburn, California

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $60.00
Overall Rating:

We often visit friends in the area, and have unsuccessfully tried to get a reservation here before. They have a lot of full time residents, so sites for just a few days are scarce. If you call, they tell you that they don't accept reservations until 30 days in advance, but on their website it states 60 days in advance. This time we were able to reserve online, and stayed here for 4 nights. The park is very nice! Lots of trees; sites are very private, with big hedges on either side. There was a big grassy area to walk dogs; would have been nicer if it was fenced, but we were happy to at least have grass there as the entire rest of the park was paved. We enjoyed our stay there, but had a weird occurrence the last day. As we were unhooking and preparing to leave, one of the managers came around to our site. He said he wanted to let us know that whenever we were gone, our dogs were barking the entire time. I was surprised to find that out, as they are usually quiet. In fact, when we came back to the site after dinner out, they were quiet as mice, only barking when they heard our car door slam. The guy at the next site was outside, so I went over to ask him if he'd heard barking, and he said that yes, he had sometimes in the evening, but not much. He told me that the manager had come a couple of days before and asked him about it. Apparently someone had complained, but we were on the end with just the one neighbor so it's perplexing. Bottom line, we would LOVE to have known sooner, so we could do something about it! We don't want to hear barking dogs ourselves, and we can't understand why they waited until we were leaving to say anything. Otherwise, I would probably have rated them higher than I did. We camped at Auburn Gold Country RV Park in a Motorhome.

The Lakes RV & Golf Resort, Chowchilla, California

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $55.00
Overall Rating:

This park was just a one night stop over for us, we didn't even unhook our tow car. However, we want to share our experience! From the beginning, when I made the reservation, the customer service was excellent. Then, on the day of our arrival, we were running late; we got a call from their office asking when we would arrive. They wanted to make sure that we knew where our info would be to find out site, and that we were able to get in the locked gate. Overall the park was very nice; well landscaped, very clean; nice level concrete pad with patio. We were traveling to a dog show, so to have a nice, grassy fenced dog run near our site was a real bonus! Our dogs loved it. Too bad we weren't staying longer, the pool and spa area was very inviting but we had no time to take advantage of it. We camped at The Lakes RV & Golf Resort in a Motorhome.

The Fair Park RV - Alameda County Fairgrounds, Pleasanton, California

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $65.00
Overall Rating:

We stay here every October to attend the dog show held at the fairgrounds. They have fixed up the buildings since our stay one year ago, but the sites remain the same. Uneven lumpy un-mown grass with a zillion flies. No fire ring or picnic table. These sites should go for $35-$40 per night, not $65. As we were getting ready to pull out the last morning, I was taking a shower when the water pressure went from very low to none at all. Turned out that the City of Pleasanton was doing work on the water lines; there would be no water for two hours. They neglected to tell anyone this; supposedly the City didn't tell them, but that's pretty unlikely. They did allow us to stay later than the check out time, until the water was on, so we could flush tanks, etc. We camped at The Fair Park RV - Alameda County Fairgrounds in a Motorhome.

Marina Dunes RV Park, Marina, California

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $85.00
Overall Rating:

Wow, what a great find! We were looking for a nice RV park near Monterey, and on-line this one looked the best. It was an excellent choice. Very pretty and clean, lots of trees, all sites had picnic tables, patios and fire pits. Beach access via a long trail; adjacent unfenced dog area. Office staff was delightful. Only two concerns here: First, the park is very noisy as it's located right up against Highway 101. Second, the sites are not very deep; our car had to be parked next to our motor home instead of in front or behind. This took up a lot of the outdoor living space. All of the sites were the same configuration; all back in, no pull through. We camped at Marina Dunes RV Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

15 minutes to the south to Monterey and Pacific Grove; we loved "The Old Fisherman's Grotto" on the pier, but the best was "Monterey's Fish House" just as you drive into town. 15 minutes north to Moss Landing, charming little town - "Phil's Fish Market" is a great place for lunch.

Wine Country RV Resort, Paso Robles, California

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $90.00
Overall Rating:

We used to love staying at this park, and have done so many times. Over the years though, their customer service has really gone downhill. It's nearly impossible to reach the resort on the phone; calls are re-routed to the Sun RV main line. They can make reservations, but their capabilities are limited. The final straw for us was this past week. We had a reservation at Wine Country, but we had to cancel it. I tried calling the resort about a week ahead of time, but couldn't reach them. The Sun RV rep also couldn't reach them; she said she would email them to cancel, and that I should also leave them a voicemail, and they would call me back. After a few days without a call, I called them again, this time reaching someone. They said there was no email from Sun RV, and no voicemail from me. And that of course it was too late to cancel! However, I could either pay a $50 cancellation fee, or I could keep the app. $95 deposit as a credit for a future stay. I agreed to have the credit, and the man I spoke to sent me an email confirming it. We ended up going to the resort after all. When we decided to do so, I again tried calling them to no avail. The Sun RV couldn't process the credit; she told me to leave a voicemail again, and just show up. When we arrived, everyone from the office was in a party in the meeting room, phones in the office ringing off the hook! A woman did come in to help me but couldn't figure out how to do the credit. I showed her the email and credit on my phone for proof; she said "I'll figure it out tomorrow, don't worry." This didn't happen; in fact, the resort charged me AGAIN instead of using the credit. I tried calling but of course, they don't answer the phone. We love the park, but we will never stay here again due to the terrible customer service. They probably have become complacent, being the only RV park in the area, but two new ones have now opened so they have some competition. We camped at Wine Country RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Orchard RV Ranch (55+ park), Dewey, Arizona

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here for a dog show in the area, so didn't spend a great deal of time at the park. However, we were overall very impressed. They were very accommodating in every way: easy to make a reservation; gave us a huge pull through site near the front. Being in the desert, everything was either gravel or asphalt. They had a medium sized fenced area for the dogs to run, this was also small gravel, which was fine. Our only issue with this was they never seemed to empty the trash can for the poop bags! It was overflowing the entire time. We used the pool and spa the last day; nice and clean, very relaxing. Quiet hours were until 8:00AM but residents were out playing pickle ball at about 6:00AM. This didn't bother us because we were up, but would probably bother other people. They had 24 hour security; the guy was always out and about on his golf cart checking on things. That was nice to see. The only discount offered was Good Sam; we only have Auto Club so no discount. All of that said, we really enjoyed this park and would stay here again. We camped at Orchard RV Ranch (55+ park) in a Motorhome.

San Francisco North / Petaluma KOA, Petaluma, California

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $75.00
Overall Rating:

We were here over Mother's day weekend, plus 2 days after. Check in was a nightmare. RVs were stacked up on the entrance road, had to park and walk up the hill to check in. Long lines inside. You'd think they'd be prepared for this. From arrival to pulling into our site took about an hour. As someone else said, this place is dangerous for kids - tons of kids darting around on bikes and skateboards. We almost hit one child who cut in front of us. This is the parent's fault though. Too many adults drinking and talking loudly around the campfire, paying no attention at all. What a difference Sunday night! Very quiet and peaceful. I would never come here on a weekend again. Our site was very un-level. First half flat, the rest sharply sloping up. Most sites were nice and grassy, but ours was dirt and weeds. If most of the park is nice, why let multiple 50 amp pull through sites be in this condition? Cable TV also did not work. We camped at San Francisco North / Petaluma KOA in a Motorhome.

Shadow Hills RV Resort, Indio, California

Date of Stay: February, 2017 - $65.00
Overall Rating:

We decided to take a weekend trip only one week in advance, but Shadow Hills thankfully had a couple of sites available. What a delightful surprise when we arrived! This gated park is just lovely, lots of grass, dog friendly, and the staff was a delight. Our three dogs enjoyed their nice fenced in grassy dog park. The park was very quiet, obviously mostly retired full time RVers, which was fantastic. We were given a back in site, which is pretty much all they have - but it was spacious and easy to get into. Tall bushes on the side of the site so plenty of privacy. Nice concrete pad, but lots of grass behind us. The huge pool was lovely; nice spa as well; we took advantage of both. We didn't use the other facilities, but we saw that they had a nice work out room, card room, and large meeting room complete with stage. The staff was very friendly, as were all of our fellow RVers. We camped at Shadow Hills RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Bakersfield River Run RV Park, Bakersfield, California

Date of Stay: May, 2016 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

This was the second time we've stay here, just a stopover on our way north. This park would be worth coming back to for a longer stay, as it is really outstanding. Both times we've checked in after hours; not a problem, our info posted for us on the office door. (We would have preferred a concrete site, but were given gravel.) Easy pull through sites; plenty of room in between; nice grass areas between sites and around the park. So many other parks in CA are claiming lack of landscape maintenance due to the drought; living in CA myself I understand water conservation. However, here at Bakersfield River Run they manage to keep everything beautiful. A real oasis. The park is very dog friendly; nice grassy doggie area with pick-up bags. Not fenced for off leash running, but nice to have a designated spot for them to “go”! Lots of other grassy areas for walking, plus a trail along the river. We camped at Bakersfield River Run RV Park in a Motorhome.

49er RV Ranch, Columbia, California

Date of Stay: May, 2016 - $43.00
Overall Rating:

Very nice park, our third time here. We stayed three nights, using this as a base to explore south to Jamestown and north to Amador City. Such a cute, rustic, atmospheric park, takes you back in time to the gold rush days. That said, they manage to keep it rustic and charming without it also being tacky and rundown. Sites are gravel; green around them is just mowed weeds, would almost be better to have more gravel and no green surfaces at all. The weeds have a lot of foxtails in them, which were an issue for our dogs. (Foxtails get stuck between toes, and if not found, work their way inside the dog, under the skin. Big hazard.) LOTS of trees, nice and shady; up a long road so you are pretty isolated; feels like real camping! Staff is very helpful and friendly; we were in a site on the hill, but had help getting in and getting out. We camped at 49er RV Ranch in a Motorhome.

Visalia / Sequoia National Park KOA, Visalia, California

Date of Stay: May, 2016 - $53.00
Overall Rating:

We have stayed at this park twice before, the last time 4 years ago. Both times it was very nice and green; some grass, some mowed weeds. Big change! Mostly mowed weeds, lots of dead patches; millions of foxtails which are a big issue for those of us who travel with dogs. The worst foxtails were in the enclosed dog yard! Yes CA has a drought; we live in CA and have the same issues at home. This seems to be a case of just letting the place run down.

On the plus sice, the staff was very friendly, park very clean, quite a few full time residents but rigs/spaces were clean and tidy.

We share others' feelings about the "one hour free wifi", should be free/unlimited like all other RV parks.

For this park I would have expected to pay about $35, not $53. And that was after the KOA club card discount. We would not stay here again. We camped at Visalia / Sequoia National Park KOA in a Motorhome.

Date of Stay: May, 2015 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

Super clean and nice! We got there well after hours, but we knew our site number and headed there. Within moments, the security guard drove up to help us set up, give us paperwork, etc. She also helped figure out our dinner plans at the casino! She went above and beyond, and we appreciated it so much. As for the park, it was lovely! Very well maintained, desert style buildings, all attractive. We used the laundry, it was immaculate. Checked in to the clubhouse too, grabbed a donut, the lady on duty was very cordial and friendly; clubhouse also attractive. We camped at Eagle View RV Resort in a Motorhome.

USA RV Park, Gallup, New Mexico

Date of Stay: May, 2015 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

This place felt like a resort! Beautiful entrance, huge well stocked gift shop, easy check in. Big wide sites with paver patios and picnic tables. Sites were set up with rigs facing every other direction, which would be great if travelling with someone else. (Probably not great otherwise, though!) We decided to stop here and called just the day before; even though they seemed fairly full, we got a nice site on the end, with a tree. Great for our dogs! Very nice desert landscape, no stickers or weeds; well maintained fenced dog run. We appreciate the dog run and lack of stickers as we travel with our two Standard Schnauzers. We also purchased propane here; easy transaction. Family run park, dad, mom, son and daughter; all were delightful and helpful. Would stay here again in a heartbeat, loved the Gallup area! Tips for other Campers:

Historic downtown Gallup a must-visit; especially "The El Rancho" historic hotel/motel. Dinner there was great, real old school steak dinner with all the trimmings, low prices.

If you're there on a Saturday do not miss the Gallup flea market! About 5 miles north of town, you can buy jewelry, blankets, baked goods, all cheaper than in town. Also several places to grab a bite, very rustic but delicious food.

WOW, this place is an oasis! Out in the middle of nowhere, it appears out of the desert. Beautiful grounds, nicely done with gravel and decomposed granite. Two fenced dog runs; and they actually have several grassy lawn areas. (A must for our dogs to walk on, they love their grass.) The place is gated 24/7, but as a guest you receive a code to enter to open the gate. Easy in and out if you want to go into Winslow for dinner. Be sure to visit "La Posada" in Winslow, the last Harvey House built in 1930. Beautifully restored to it's original glory, a destination in itself. We didn't have time to dine there, but the Turquoise Room looked so inviting and romantic, with a panoramic view of the trains outside hearkening back to another era.
