This state park is primitive in what is offered unless you love the quietness of a wind swept prairie, fishing lake with a nice walking trail with benches around it and lots of bunnies and roadrunners to watch. Updates are being made with totally solar restrooms and showers, all levels of camping for very reasonable cost. We used a electric and water handicapped concrete pad with wonderful covered picnic table. We stayed only one night but if in this area again, I would look forward to staying longer next time.

Midway Park COE

Waco, Texas

Date of Stay:

Our first stay was booked the same day as our stay. There were two pull thru sites that fit our 40', 50amp, with 4 slides. We selected site 29 sight unseen and we arrived the site was covered with low hanging trees completely covering the site. We went back to the office and requested another sight if possible. Renea, office worker, was kind enough to move us 2 sites up to 31 which was completely open. The sight was level and wide with a nice covered table area. We can hear traffic noise..but we have a nice site to live while visiting Waco, TX. The campground was neatly mowed and other than one camping site filled with weekend camper cluther that looks to be used by several individuals..the campground was very clean.

Quiet park, many of spaces have shade, gravel pull thrus, picnic tables available on many sites, lots of trash cans around campground, clean 2 stall/2 shower bathrooms, laundry, game room, very nice staff. All campers were invited to share hot dogs and hamburgers on 4th of July and a family birthday party with hamburgers for owners family member. We were here for 30 days, made very good friends and enjoyed our stay while helping to clean up Joplin after tornado. I would stay again if in this area. Love the little town of Carthage - a must see - travel down the original Route 66 which comes through this adorable little town.

This was our first stay here, although we met others who camp here frequently, so my opinion must not be shared with all. But I found this campground very dirty and not maintained well. This is a very sandy campground. There are lots of big rigs parked in the campground, but I do not see a quality campground here. The check in office was filthy by my standards, dusty, spider webs, darka and smelled of smoke. Nasty! After driving thru the rest of the park, I could only say the owner has not been able to maintain the park as it once might have been. Not all sites have picnic tables and some tables are rotten. Restrooms were not dirty, just seemed that way. Rough concrete floors had several layers of worn paint showing around the edges, commodes where strained from the water, but there were no paper towels on the floor. Showers were individual, had rubber mats on the floor, but were dark and again, the rough stained looking wall looked dirty. The owner has a special personality, friendly but a little odd. His clothes were torn and dirty so I guess the way the campground is kept is the way he prefers to live. The campground website states its the simple life, and that it is, very simple, but the price doesn't equal the quality of the campground. We travel all over the states and have experienced great campgrounds and not so great. This is not a keeper in my opinion, although there are many that must not have as high a level of what is quality as I do. We will not use this campground again, but will remain our 3 nights that we agreed to stay this trip. To be honest to the owners dreams, he wants to offer special things, but in building a new item lets the old ones go and doesn't keep up the area. You can see he has added a lot of items to make this campground special, but has not kept up what is here. I don't see the reason to want to come back as the couple that checked in with us that has been coming here for 15 years, or the ones parked next to us that has been here 5 years in a row. We are parked at the front gate, again next to the highway, across the street from Lake Superior. A very busy highway, but you can hear the sound of the lake and get the northern breeze. But that's about all I can say as a plus in our experience here.

Entrance into the campground has a flower pot and a sign to squeeze through, most roads have lots of curves but we had no trouble in our 37' motorhome. There is only one set of showers and bathrooms located in the middle of this huge park, all other bathrooms scattered around are outhouses with no water to wash your hands. Overall, the camp was very pretty, nice view, not as close to the bridge as pictures show, but nice view of lake. We experienced a very heavy rain one of our 2 nights, water was standing in some areas. I would stay again, even if cost was a little high for service received. Our TV only picked up a few channels, we could not get satellite coverage. The one big thing I did not like was no trash cans were available throughout the park, only one as you leave the campground, a long way from most of the campers. No where provided to put doggie waste that must be picked up. Dogs are not allowed in some grass areas, must keep them on the pavement?

We were given a backin slot next to the Highway 28 in the front of the campground. A little noisy but not enough to keep you from sleeping at night. Campground had lots of trees, sand roads and camping spaces, nice pool, cable TV, and friendly employees; but the shower house and bathrooms were always dirty. Other campers left messes everywhere (paper towels on floor, shampoo bottles, soap, dirt in wash basins), wet sand on the floor, water hose in bathhouse was too short to wash the floor before showering, did not see a cleaning schedule. I was in the bathhouse several times during our stay and it was alway dirty. Partly other campers but mostly management not keeping the room clean. It needs more than one cleaning if that is all they clean a day. Would use campground again, but would only use my motorhome bathroom and shower.
