June, 2005 -
We stayed at Pirateland for 4 days in June 2005 and have already reserved the same Ocean Front site for a week next year. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. I have heard that Pirateland has the best beach front of all three of the Ocean Front campgrounds. There are dunes that actually block your ocean view from the campsite but its just a few steps away and you can hear it. The sunrise is spectacular! We did encounter fire ants on our site but we took a quick trip down to the well-stocked camp store and bought a can of ant spray to take care of that. We sprayed our site daily and kept them under control. The Ocean Front sites are angled so I can see how some of the bigger RV's may experience trouble getting in but we were fine in our 27ft TT with a slide out and we even set up an Add a Room to accommodate our teens. I think Pirateland is the only Ocean Front Campground to have pavilions at each site and that was a great benefit since we did not have trees to shade us. Our awning ended right at the Pavilion. Myrtle Beach has a humid climate and storms can pop up quickly. Strapping down your awning is critical. We noticed that many folks wrapped tarps around part of their pavilion to keep wind and rain out ? we did the same and found it very helpful. If you have teens, they will love it at Pirateland. Yes, it is true - around 8PM, the teens take over the golf carts and parade around until about 11PM, which is when security enforces the golf cart curfew. My teens had such a great time inside the campground, they didn?t realize that there was so much more to explore outside the grounds. That?s why we are staying a full week next year. I saw security patrolling regularly and they let the teens have some fun as long as they didn?t get out of hand. I have read some negative reviews about problems with teens at the campground but during my stay, I did not encounter any negative issues. Our teens used the bathhouse and we found that it was always clean. The Lazy River and pool were clean but crowded. If you love beach camping and have kids, Pirateland is the place to stay in Myrtle Beach. We camped at Pirateland Family Campground in a Travel Trailer.
