About socalretiree

My wife and I are both retired. Our travel interest is to see as much of the U.S. as we can. We tend to travel during the non-summer months to avoid the crowds. Museums, art, history, antique shops, and nature are specific interests.

Flag City RV Resort, Lodi, California

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $60.00
Overall Rating:

Clean, well maintained, great staff. Easy access and exit. Close to 5 and 99 fwy. Gas and restaurants and shopping and entertainment. Big dog run (football field size), nice pool, meeting room. Sites are cement with grass, trees, picnic table. Hookups are easy and well maintained as are the grounds in general. Office staff informed and helpful. Roads are wide enough for big rigs but some turns are tight but manageable. Extended stay here to visit Lodi area or Delta would be fine. Plenty of pull-thru sites. Traffic noise is not an issue. Plenty of space for slide outs. We camped at Flag City RV Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Visalia / Sequoia National Park KOA, Visalia, California

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

THIS IS AN OLDER PARK THAT HAS SEEN BETTER DAYS. BLACKTOP AND GRAVEL ROADS MAKE FOR LOTS OF DUST. Not much privacy between spaces but not cramped. Trees but dried grass in summer. Not really a well maintained facility. NICE PET AREA. Cabins and tent sites. LOCATED IN HOUSING AREA AND OPEN FIELDS. Easy access to freeway. NO CONVENIENCES IN IMMEDIATE AREA. Great for one night. SOME LONG TERM CAMPERS. Road noise during normal commute hours. HOOKUPS ARE OLD AND NEED UPDATING BUT SERVE PURPOSE. Might be tough for big rigs to navigate through park due to tight turns and narrow lanes. We camped at Visalia / Sequoia National Park KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Pechanga RV Resort & Casino, Temecula, California

Overall Rating:

Pechanga RV Resort is a clean, well maintained and operated facility in Temecula. The sites and roads are well cared for with shade trees, easy access, back in and pull thru sites, grass areas between sites. Large rigs are easily handled. Roads and sites are cement. Restrooms and showers are new and clean. Shade trees at most sites except new section. Only negative is no security on site and no response to requests for assistance at night. We camped at Pechanga RV Resort & Casino in a Travel Trailer.

Mission Bay RV Resort, San Diego, California

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $79.00
Overall Rating:

The park is a large black top parking lot facility with some trees for shade. All sites are back in. There are two large restroom/shower facilities that are dated but well maintained and clean. Trash cans are numerous and convenient and emptied each morning. Available dog walking area (very large) and close to Fiesta Island (very, very large dog area on Bay). Fire pits/wood available for rent. Quiet hours are 10pm to 8am. Park is fenced with security check in gate. Swimming area/beach (no life guard on duty) is 10 yards from entrance gate. Security patrols 24/7. Boat launch available and of course plenty of fishing. Large public park next door. Only negative is the large number of homeless individuals (with related problems-drugs/mental illness/disease) in Mission Bay area. We camped at Mission Bay RV Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Carpinteria State Beach, Carpinteria, California

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $70.00
Overall Rating:

We checked in on Sunday afternoon and left early the following Friday. The campground is still in the process of improving the landscaping but the summer heat did some damage. The campground is a blacktop parking lot with very limited space between sites. We stayed in Santa Rosa section. Beach side sites were packed, little if any privacy. Lots of dogs, off leash dogs is a problem and getting worse as leash regulation is ignored frequently. Beach showers are back on. Fishing not great. Water temperature was cold but beautiful wave action, wet suit suggested. Watch the tar, use sun screen or other cream to help you remove from body. County beach area to the south (past stairs) permits dogs on beach, many running free. Weekend prior to halloween is celebrated with many displays by campers. Park rangers are nice, friendly, helpful guys. Check in is easy. Not all sites are available online, saved for drive up. We camped at Carpinteria State Beach in a Travel Trailer.

Pala Casino RV Resort, Pala, California

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $47.00
Overall Rating:

This is a new park (1 year) and looks like it: clean, well kept, big sites, new trees, everything looks untouched. Nice location in valley and close to casino. Convenient to Temecula (10 miles) and east county areas. Only 30 minutes from Oceanside and the beach. Friendly, helpful staff, especially office ladies. Night security is a little scarce but I am sure that will improve. Hwy access road twisty but not a real issue, just take your time. Only minutes from freeway. We camped at Pala Casino RV Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Tombstone Territories RV Resort, Huachuca City, Arizona

Date of Stay: April, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

WOW. What a rare gem, and in the middle of nowhere. Which was perfect because you are actually in the middle of everything there is to see and do in that part of SE Arizona. It starts right as you enter with the only RV park memorial to our Armed Forces, the Stars and Stripes surrounded by the five service flags Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marines, and Navy. Yea USA. The park is clean, well maintained, large pull through spaces w/patios. Club house, enclosed pool, dog run, walking trails, activities, and a great staff to top it all off. Next time I think a longer stay will be necessary. We camped at Tombstone Territories RV Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Picacho / Tucson NW KOA , Picacho, Arizona

Date of Stay: April, 2017 - $39.00
Overall Rating:

This is a pretty rustic campground in a very barren, hot, dry part of the country. Few shade trees so need an awning, but can get windy. Ten acre dog run at back of park is great for fido. Office staff has hens which mean farm fresh eggs! Be sure to ask for some, we got a free dozen, yum. Restaurant on site is GREAT!!!!! Only open Wed thru Sunday/4 to 8pm. Make reservations, is crowded. Called Frankie's Chuckwagon. We camped at Picacho / Tucson NW KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Blue Sky Ranch RV Park (formerly Arizona Sands RV Park) (55+ Park), Yuma, Arizona

Date of Stay: March, 2017 - $47.00
Overall Rating:

Only spent two nights here but really liked our stay. One of few Yuma parks with some tree shade. Friendly staff and snowbirds. Nice laundry facility. Easy in and out of space and park. Just on city outskirts. GPS will get you lost, look for exit 12 on east side of city, you want frontage road on south side of Hwy 8. Mission Bay RV Resort, San Diego, California

Date of Stay: March, 2017 - $70.00
Overall Rating:

For RVers needing to stay in the San Diego area, this is the best there is. Large, convenient, clean, secure, well managed, pet friendly. Power well placed, easy hookup. At rear of space. Sewer well placed, easy hookup. Drivers side of space, about mid point. But still, the best part of this place remains the ladies in the office. They get the job done while being friendly and helpful. We camped at Mission Bay RV Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Carpinteria State Beach, Carpinteria, California

Date of Stay: December, 2016 - $48.00
Overall Rating:

This is about the 35th year my family has visited this facility. Over the years we have witnessed a slow deterioration of the campground due to a lack of improvements and a failure to maintain the facility. The roads now have significant low spots that cause flooding of sites during rains, old trees remain that need removal thus requiring evacuation of sites for safety reasons, the restrooms remain too small for the summer population, limited state police allows for intrusion of homeless into campground raising safety concerns, the lack of a sand wall allows for excessive sand to be blown from the beach into the campground. We camped at Carpinteria State Beach in a Travel Trailer.

Convenient basic needs shopping in town and some restaurants. Town shuts down at 10pm in off-season. If fishing head to south end of beach near rocks. Plenty of walking trails available.

Mission Bay RV Resort, San Diego, California

Date of Stay: November, 2015 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

This park is paved, limited trees, close sites but OK for slide outs and awnings. Convenient to all of San Diego sites, close to water activities, biking trails, fishing. Office staff was friendly, 24 hour security. This is not a destination park, not a resort but perfectly placed to visit San Diego. Crowded during summer and difficult to move with larger RV's. Traffic noise is not a problem, but kid noisy could be. If you want quiet and sedate, you might try elsewhere or keep your visits to the off season. Club Royal Oak RV Resort, Kingsburg, California

Date of Stay: April, 2015 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Alas, the ravages of No Water have descended upon this once fair campground leaving only a dried and dusty remnant. The river has been long gone for a few years leaving only a sand filled riverbed that plays host to off roaders who create dust clouds that make you cough and leave a coat of dust on everything. The park is filled with long term residents, long stored vehicles and boats, and it looks like it. The office carries no information about the surrounding area and its sightseeing features or history. The park is quiet unless the occasional drinking party is in session well past the quiet time. Lots of off leash dogs but none appeared to be aggressive. Crowded together sites, no real privacy (ie: trees, bushes between sites). I will not return to this park and I suggest you avoid making reservations here, also. We camped at Club Royal Oak RV Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Las Quintas Oasis RV Resort (55+ park), Yuma, Arizona

Date of Stay: February, 2015 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

This is a park for long time residents and snowbirds from around the country and Canada. The park is blacktop with gravel, level sites. The sites are large and easy in and out for short timers. No shade trees or landscaping. Very clean, strict rules, nice people, convenient to everything, many park activities. Office closes at 4pm so don't be late to check in. We stayed 4 nights and found it a very pleasant location but if you are a light sleeper the highway noise may be a problem. Residents are up and going by 7am so be prepared to with aquarobics, volleyball, shuffle board, and the walkers. Will stay again if in area. Really nice place and great staff. Paved sites with grass and trees. Good place for kids with plenty to do. Beaches, hiking, sightseeing, lots for the adults. Santa Cruz is south, Half Moon Bay is north. Upscale restaurant and general store on site. Really crowded on weekends. Will stay again when in area. No cell phone service unless near check-in area (AT&T is best reception). We camped at Santa Cruz North / Costanoa KOA in a Travel Trailer.
