Sherando Lake Recreation Area, Lyndhurst, Virginia

Date of Stay: April, 2011 - $34.00
Overall Rating:

Located at the bottom a ravine from the BRP (the drive down was steep, but nothing out of the normal for the BRP or mountain roads). The campsite was well laid out and the self-checkin provided a detailed map to our site, which was marked with our name (we had reserved the site online). The other campers were friendly but not overly so. The campsite was situated in a wooded area with a river running by. We barely noticed the rain. We truly enjoyed the nature surrounding the site. We would come again. We camped at Sherando Lake Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Fancy Gap / Blue Ridge Parkway KOA, Fancy Gap, Virginia

Date of Stay: April, 2011 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

The selling points are the location: immediately off of the BRPwy. It's also a KOA, so you've got some certainty of its amenities. We arrived at 7 pm; the staff showed us the campsite: a pull-through. We can't say much about the campground because the weather kept us inside (cold, wet and very foggy). The sites were close together (15' - 20' wide by ~40+' long), not our thing as we like more privacy. We appreciated the dog park, however with the rain, the ground was pretty squeeshy. We left early in the morning. We would consider staying here again because of the location to the BRP and would be more attentive in selecting our site; the weather just wasn't cooperating. We camped at Fancy Gap / Blue Ridge Parkway KOA in a Motorhome.

Buck Hill Campground, Plumtree, North Carolina

Date of Stay: April, 2011 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Tranquil is the perfect description. Nestled in between the mountains, with a river rushing by, our campsite was right on the water. The sites include cement patios and picnic tables. The bathrooms were the cleanest we've ever seen; white walls and shower curtains and throw rugs showed no signs of wear. Falling asleep with the window open to hear the peaceful sound of the river was a unique experience: something we look forward to again. Also, the staff was very friendly and helpful, providing us our choice in select sites. We camped at Buck Hill Campground in a Motorhome.

Ash Grove Resort Cabins & Camping, Brevard, North Carolina

Date of Stay: April, 2011 - $31.00
Overall Rating:

A unique experience: mountain campsite, felt like we were miles away from any city. Great staff: very friendly and it was obvious they care. They provided an informational pamphlet with interests / local businesses / excursions. The site was private. This campground provides their very own hiking trails! The most level campsite we've stayed at. Impressive being that they are on a mountain and we had to drive our RV up to the site. We went when there were no leaves, falling asleep looking out the skylight was incredible. The stars were right there. This was a campsite that we found online and arranged our trip to include it based on its write-up. Now we'd go back because we know it's a find! We camped at Ash Grove Resort Cabins & Camping in a Motorhome.
