Big Rock Campground, Big Rock, Illinois

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

This is a newer park, and a great place for a few days to a week. Sites are nice and large, however, the trees are still maturing so no shade, which would be a problem in hot summers. Quiet park, great trail to nearby lake and woods, about 3 miles round trip. Attendants/hosts were great. No credit cards, cash or check only. No sewer hookups, but double dump site. Park is only about 12 miles from the Aurora Metra station which gets you to the Chicago Loop in about 45 minutes. Make sure you have at least 75' of hose as some water hook ups are placed a bit far from the pads. We will definitely return when in area. We camped at Big Rock Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Alum Creek State Park, Delaware, Ohio

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $16.00
Overall Rating:

Great park! Residential areas all around the park, but you would never know it in the park. Wooded, well laid out park. We don't fish, but apparently the fishing is fantastic in the lake. Many sites look out on the lake. Most sites are electric only, but they do have about a dozen full hook-up sites, not on the lake. We camped at Alum Creek State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Only about 25 minutes to the heart of Columbus with plenty to do there. There are limited number of campgrounds near Columbus, and we checked them all out and this is by far the best for a camping experience.

Pine Grove Furnace State Park, Gardners, Pennsylvania

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $26.00
Overall Rating:

This is a great park for visiting the Gettysburg/Harrisburg/Hershey area. Very rustic, huge sites, lots of trees. The AT museum is in the park which is very interesting. During the week, there is very few people in the park. Weekends pick up a bit, but you don't feel crowded and noise level is still very good. We will definitely stay here again when in the area. We camped at Pine Grove Furnace State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Definitely take time walk part of the AT, and the other hiking trails around the park. There is also a very nice lake and beach in the park. Only about 30 minutes to Gettysburg in one direction and Harrisburg/Hershey 30 minutes in the other direction. BTW, the Hershey Chocolate Factory tour is like a Disney ride, nothing at all in the factory to see them actually making the chocolate. Not what we had expected at all.

Camp Hatteras RV Resort & Campground, Waves, North Carolina

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $95.00
Overall Rating:

This is the premier park on the OBX, but it is getting a bit pricey, particularly if you are only there to camp and use the beach, as we were. Not sure with their rates why they charge extra for each dog, cable, etc. If you have kids, there is plenty for them to do besides the beach. The sound side is much better to camp on as you can see the water and watch the sunsets. On the beach side, you cannot see the ocean from the campsites because of the dunes, and it is much busier. We camped at Camp Hatteras RV Resort & Campground in a Travel Trailer.

James Island County Park, Charleston, South Carolina

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Fantastic county run park with best dog park we have seen anywhere. Dogs even have their own lake. Some sites are a bit crowded, but overall there is pretty good spacing. Plenty of shade as well. Great paved hiking/biking paths all over the park. And with the camping you also get free access to the other county parks including a few beaches. We camped at James Island County Park in a Travel Trailer.

A great park for visiting the Charleston area, only about 15 minutes or so to downtown. The park also offers a shuttle for $10. Highly recommend eating at Eli's. And of course be sure to take in the City Market.

Indiana Dunes State Park, Chesterton, Indiana

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $22.00
Overall Rating:

We have camped here every year for almost 20 years and always have a great time. Nice large sites, we'll maintained. Easy walk, bike ride or drive to the beach. Great hiking trails. Nature center always worth a stop. Very busy during summer, always full, so make reservations early on their website, 6 months out. Probably would rate a 10 but no water or sewer hook-ups, which is kind of a hassle. Other than that this is a great state park to spend a week or two. We camped at Indiana Dunes State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Sugar Bottom COE, Solon, Iowa

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $10.00
Overall Rating:

This is another great COE park that is very popular on weekends. Our site was a little tight and very close to the road, but we managed. There are plenty of much nicer and larger sites, but we had reserved sight unseen. Now that we have been there we would look at sites around #120 area. There is a very nice beach and boat ramp, and boat rentals nearby. Beautiful drive into park, a bit twisty, but no problem even pulling a big trailer. Definitely a family oriented place. We will likely return. We camped at Sugar Bottom COE in a Travel Trailer.

Natchez Trace State Park / Pin Oak Lake, Lexington, Tennessee

Date of Stay: May, 2016 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

Great state park, full hookups, right on lake. Our site was right on water with beautiful view of sunsets, and moon rises. Park is well maintained, every site cleaned after every stay. Very quiet. All sites are spacious, typical of most state parks. Great hiking trails. This is remote and cell coverage was weak, but we loved it. Closest towns were Lexington, about 15 miles, and Jackson, about 30. About 50 miles from Shiloh national battlefield, which was exceptional. We stayed 9 days , sight unseen, and were not disappointed. Would definitely return. We camped at Natchez Trace State Park / Pin Oak Lake in a Travel Trailer.

Illini State Park, Marseilles, Illinois

Date of Stay: September, 2012 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

What a great park with many sites right on the river where you can watch the barges go by day and night, along with other boat activity. This would be a 10 if they had water hook ups at the sites. Site was easy to back into and easy to level our travel trailer. Some sites are close together, but most are a nice size, and there is plenty of grass area between the back of the sites and the water. We will definitely camp here again. We camped at Illini State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Carbondale/Crystal River KOA (formerly Crystal River Resort Cabins an, Carbondale, Colorado

Date of Stay: July, 2012 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

This is a great camping location, we had a space right on little Crystal Creek, it was beautiful. The new owner is making great strides and in another year or so this will definitely be a 10, especially once they get the sewers in. Free honey wagon though with a couple day notice. We were there during the fire ban so couldn't have campfire nor grills, but we still had a great time. If you are looking for a nice place in the Aspen area this is definitely the spot. We camped at Carbondale/Crystal River KOA (formerly Crystal River Resort Cabins an in a Travel Trailer.

Illiniwek Park and Forest Preserve, Hampton, Illinois

Date of Stay: May, 2012 - $14.00
Overall Rating:

Wonderful, well kept campground on Mississippi River. Sites are a bit small, but it wasn't crowded so every other site left plenty of space. This time of year it is heavy with fish flies; be ready to have a campfire to keep them away. Very nice bike path runs through the campground which you can ride for 10 to 20 miles in either direction. Nice location, we would stay here again for a weekend. We camped at Illiniwek Park and Forest Preserve in a Travel Trailer.
