Mackinaw City Campground, Mackinaw City, Michigan

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

If you want a home base while visiting the Mackinaw City area, I recommend this park but only if your RV is self contained. Besides water and electric hookups and a dump station, there are no amenities. There is a men's and lady's toilet but they are pit toilets only. Still, for the prices in this area's other parks, this place is a blessing! The only thing is, there is no office with an attendant, therefore no one to offer any help if you have problems. When we arrived, no one greeted us until we had set there a while, wondering where we were supposed to go. Finally a lady came and pointed out our site. It was quiet at night, surprisingly enough even though located between 2 main roads. About half the sites had some kind of shade, but ours had none at all. Also, there are no "rules for the park" given out so short of other campers politeness you are out of luck. There was one group who had at least 2 little dogs in a cage and they yapped pretty much all day...the owner of the dogs made no attempt to shut them up. Very annoying indeed. The park owners have a pen of chickens behind all the RVs and advertise eggs for sale, which is nice, but what struck me as the ultimate in ridiculousness is that they had a coin feeder mounted on the side of the cage so that YOU could PAY to feed THEIR chickens!! I guess that's good for them if it works! That way they collect money from when the chickens eat and also from when they sell the eggs!! Overall this a a place to park off road with NO amenities. Dump station which was nearly directly behind our site. I would have thought it would be better located a distance from paying guests. We camped at Mackinaw City Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Covenant Hills Camp, Otisville, Michigan

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

We code this park because of location, close to relatives. This is a church camp type of place with numerous campsites, about 400 of them! We were there over the 4th and the place was nearly full with lots of children. The park allows no alcoholic beverages at all and smoking allowed only in your rv if you must smoke. No fireworks or ATV's allowed, but golf carts OK. Quiet time strictly enforced so very quiet at night. The camp has a guard house where everyone must stop unless you have a plaquard which designates current campers, then you are waved through. Very friendly and helpful staff, everyone cheerful and smiling. We had one small issue as did the man in the next lot; the sewer cap was stuck, looked like someone had run over it, it was flush with ground level. Called office and a maintenance man was sent right out and removed the cap for us. There is lots of shade available in general at this park but we didn't have any, young trees planted where we were, not yet large enough to help. Michigan was having a heat wave the week we were there but we had no electrical shortages. We enjoyed our stay here and would stay here again! We camped at Covenant Hills Camp in a Fifth Wheel.

Park management told us about a wonderful family restaurant in the small town of Millington and we enjoyed eating there. Also, Michigan's Bavarian town, Frankenmuth was near so we always enjoy visiting there! The park has a small lake used for swimming and fishing.

Country Acres Campground, Ravenna, Ohio

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

This is a beautiful park, lots of trees and a gorgeous, private lake in the middle with a fountain that was lighted at night. You felt like you were way out in the woods, the sites are very generously spaced and partially shaded. There are lots of squirrels running around, one afternoon I just sat out and watched them. The only complaints I have are that one morning the water pressure was really low, and the last day there were intermittent whiffs of a horrible stench from the sewer. I walked to the office and reported it to the girl, who said "the guys are doing something with the sewer, I will talk to them." It was better after that. Also, entering the park, a couple of the turns were a little tight for us (42 footer) and my husband had to stop and back up a couple of times in one turn due to some full timers marking their flower beds with rocks and bricks, but once we got to our site, we were fine. They have a gated entry which is nice so you know everyone driving in the park has an RV there. I would certainly camp here again! We camped at Country Acres Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Oak Creek Campground, Verona, Kentucky

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

Online reviews of this park were really good, so I was glad she could fit us in for the weekend. When we arrived we had to pull up to the office to register and there is really no parking lot. Our site was behind us on the narrow road so we had to take their turnaround circle which is a little tight for a 42 ft fifth wheel. When we got to the site we found for that price we had no sewer hookups so if we wanted to dump we would have to go through the turnaround again! Music was going late into the night Saturday, til about midnight. Sites were tight, very close together, so close that when someone pulled in next to us it killed our dish TV. No room to swing a big rig when park is full, which it was both nights we were there. We were thinking we were going to have to try to back out, but found out our neighbors on both sides are also pulling out tomorrow. Also the site was just long enough for our RV and we had to park our truck on a lot about 150 feet away. They had cable but only 9 channels, most local so we weren't at all interested. People were very nice and considerate and the great thing is the Ark Encounter is only 19 miles away! Many full timers back in the park but they save the front for those of us who come and go. This place is surrounded by woods and many sites back up to the creek so that's nice. We camped at Oak Creek Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Renfro Valley RV Park, Mount Vernon, Kentucky

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $22.00
Overall Rating:

I am describing the old park. The new part is adjacent but we thought, when driving in, that it was part of the KOA so we ended up in the old part which is all 30 amp. We had our adaptor so were OK. Lots of shade available if you don't mind backing in to sites along the creek. We ended up in a pull through. (You can pick your own site early in the week - we arrived on Sunday about 5 pm so the park mostly empty in the old part.) The office is across the street and wasn't officially open with no one to talk to when we arrived so we just picked a site. The manager was driving around the park shortly after and he said we could stay so we set up and then he opened the office and registered us. The site was just barely long enough for our RV but the manager allowed us to use the adjacent site for parking our truck. Very good rates for PA Sunday thru Wednesday night. Those 4 nights cost less than the sum of Thursday and Friday nights combined! The rate I posted was an average of the amount we paid. The bathrooms were very old and badly in need of updating. They just didn't look clean to me but my husband thought they were fine...I avoided them. No laundry facilities - the washing machines were removed and laundry room locked. The park is very scenic and quiet in spite of proximity to I-75. Again, had we known of the new part (it was not explained when I made reservations even though I called twice), we would have known to stay in the new part. Overall a good place to stay Sunday thru Wednesday nights! We camped at Renfro Valley RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Big Buck Resort, Hornsby, Tennessee

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

We arrived very tired after 8 hours of driving about 4 pm. Went to office and it was locked so I called the number for assistance. The lady said they were out of town and wouldn't be back til tomorrow. I made reservations a month ahead and called to confirm while on the road, and no one said there wouldn't be anyone in the office. She told us to go to site 44 which was down a drive we had passed on the way in, so my husband had to back our 42 footer up about 80 feet and take the road described. When we got to the camping area, there were many full timers there who had trash lying all over the place. We couldn't find the site because it wasn't numbered. I asked one of the campers where it was and he pointed it out. All sites appear to be back ins. On top of all that it was a gravel site and if you got off the gravel you would sink in the mud. Then the hookups were beyond the back of the site and so was the sewer. It took 3 sewer hoses to reach the sewer which we fortunately happened to have. The lake is all overgrown with some kind of weeds and the whole place is in need of cleaning up. There was no switch to shut off the 50 amp when plugging in, which is dangerous! It is a huge overstatement to call this place a resort! We camped at Big Buck Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

We had stayed here in 2011 but the park had deteriorated so badly we stayed away til now. The park in the interim became under new ownership and it is a different place! Many upgrades in the campground where it counts. Park roads are now blactopped as are many of the pull through sites, we were all pleasantly surprised! We were in the middle row where we had plenty of shade and room to park our 42 foot fifth wheel plus our pickup and still have room left over! The hall we were set to use (Liberty Hall) had the AC malfunctioning and it was Sunday, but a repair person came out that day and repaired it. Many spots in the floor of the hall were soft and spongy including one spot barricaded off along the west wall. Manager who is very polite and helpful explained that this hall is slated for extensive repairs including tearing up the floor and subfloor and replacing it with hardwood floors. The kitchen in this hall was large and easy to work in, the hall also had a women's and a men's restroom. The park also offers WiFi which we didn't use. The only thing more I would like to see is cable TV, but we brought our dish receiver so were fine. Also, in spite of being located on a major highway, the park is very quiet at night. It is less than 1/2 mile from Wal-Mart and less than a mile to Ali's so a good place to stock up! We camped at American RV Park & Sales in a Fifth Wheel.

Area's Finest Country View Campground, Ogallala, Nebraska

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $31.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here a week, and very much enjoyed everything about this park! The hosts were personable and very willing to help. Much thought went into them assigning our site, we got a very special site with generous afternoon shade because we were staying the week. Sites were fairly level, fine gravel surface with grass on either side. We were personally led to our site by one of the hosts on his golf cart. This was a popular site for big rigs as the pull throughs were very long and plenty of room between. The only reason I didn't rate this park a 10 is that there was a Fed Ex truck site right next to the park where trucks came and went all night and day, but they weren't extremely loud and I didn't hear them at night, it just ruined the country atmosphere a bit. The park is only a half mile off the interstate so easy off and on, and WalMart is only about 2 miles away! We were surrounded on 2 sides by miles of corn fields! The laundry had fairly new machines and only cost $1 to wash and $1.50 to dry, the dryers ran almost an hour! We camped at Area's Finest Country View Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Ogallala has Nebraska's largest lake which is a reservoir. The dam produces much of Nebraska's electricity and is gorgeous with fine white sand beaches. Boot Hill is an old pioneer cemetery from Ogallala's wilder days. Also the petrified wood museum is not to be missed! We toured "The Mansion on the Hill" built in 1887 and still mostly original. Ogallala claims to be Nebraska's Cowboy Capital.

Fossil Creek RV Park, Russell, Kansas

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $26.00
Overall Rating:

Arrived and read the sign that said we could choose our own spot, so we did. The office is the owner's home so I went to pay and check to be sure our spot was OK with her. It was so we set up. The only negative is that there are also full timers in the park in single wides which would normally be OK. However, sitting out enjoying the cool weather that evening, we heard one of the residents shouting obscenities at someone! Also, there were barking dogs, again at the single wides. The owner was no where to be seen, and there were no printed rules given to us when we checked in. All in all, though, there are few sites and few campers so we had lots of room between us and others. The sites are actually very close but you can tell that people regularly choose every other site so that no one is too close as the owner let's you choose the site that suits you. There are back in sites and pull through sites so you can choose what you want. There are LOTS of trees and bushes in the park which we enjoyed. Even though you are only about 1/4 mile from the interstate, there is very little noise due to sell the trees and bushes. We enjoyed our stay due to the quiet and the relative privacy of the park and spacing of campers. We camped at Fossil Creek RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

The first night we didn't feel like cooking so went into town to get diesel fuel. We finally found some at the propane place and asked them where to eat. They recommended a bar downtown on Main Street called "840 Ale" The food was excellent and the service was great! Nearest Wal mart is back in Hays, about 25 miles away.

We stayed here to be close to the many attractions in this area. Found the park in the Passport America book so had never seen it. Park is very close to 90 so lots of highway noise, on top of that a railroad borders the park so you have trains too. Our site though was plenty wide enough and we had full hookups. They also offer cable TV but we didn't use it, have our own dish. Only 30 amp service available on our site but that was OK, we didn't run the AC at all, nice weather! We stayed here only one night on our way through. Park itself was very clean and neat. Only 8 sites that I saw and 3 of them were occupied by long term staters. Loved the town of Sheridan but didn't enjoy the park. Very, very close together! Uncomfortably so.... The sites are so narrow that slide outs nearly touch and you can not put your awnings all the way out. The owner of the park is a micromanager at best and a tyrant at worst! He cruises the park many times a day in his truck looking for what he determines are infractions of his rules, printed or not! Not a pleasant atmosphere and then having your neighbor so close made things worse. Bathrooms and laundry very clean at all times. We did our laundry in town at "Wash Your Woolies" as I read in a review that the park owner had turned the dryers way down so you have to keep the quarters coming! I definitely could believe that! On parking....our site was just long enough for our RV but would not accommodate our truck also so we had to park by the bathrooms. We camped at Peter D's RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

The only reason I didn't rate this park 5 stars is there was no septic available at each site. Happy Jack Lodge and RV Park, Happy Jack, Arizona

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $41.00
Overall Rating:

We made reservations to stay here with full hookups. Very rude staff and owners. They cater only to their long term renters and don't care about visitors. Though all sites in the park had sewer hookups, they put us in a site that did not, even though they promised us full hookups. The park management claimed sewer was available though it was 30 feet away and Y-ed into the next (occupied) site's sewer. We didn't have 30 feet of hose and no help offered. I asked for discount because of this and was told "this park doesn't give discounts for any reason!"

Campers running around all hours on noisy 4 wheelers, which seemed to be the reason for this park's existence. Site was on busy corner so we got lots of noise from the loud 4 wheelers. Operators did not try to be quiet and roared their engines at all hours. Site so unlevel our RV could not level itself even after we put blocks under one side.

No cell phone device, way out in the middle of nowhere. In mountains, so cool. Long drive to any attractions. Guess that's why all the site renters (Long term) had 4 wheelers. They even had tents set up on their sites to house all their "toys"

If I could rate 0 stars, I would! We camped at Happy Jack Lodge and RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tres Rios River Ranch, Glen Rose, Texas

Date of Stay: October, 2016 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed 10 days here. Full hookups but no cable TV. WiFi free but we didn't use it this stay. Weekdays and nights very quiet however the weekend we were there there were many families with children who were noisy and didn't observe the quiet time. I was awakened at 7:15 on Saturday with kids screaming and yelling and dogs barking. No phone number to call for security, you have to walk way up to the office and push a button to get anyone. However, after I complained to management Saturday, Sunday morning was quieter but I was very happy to see the loud families leave that day! They have a church service Sunday mornings in the park courtesy of the local Cowboy Church. I always attend Sunday Services at 10 am at that church.

This park has many grass stickers in it this time of year, they stick to EVERYTHING and our dog gets them in her paws if we don't carry her (50+ lbs!) over the patches of burrs while walking her.

The rivers surrounding the park are beautiful and the park tried to keep the habitat as natural as possible. As I said, weekdays and nights are very quiet as a rule and we appreciate that. They have a restaurant in the historical lodge that is open on weekends only. There are separate buildings for organized activities for children and adults and children are supervised at all times. Also, we appreciate that the park is gated and does not allow motorcycles in except to go directly to and from their sites. We camped at Tres Rios River Ranch in a Fifth Wheel.
