Newport / I-40 / Smoky Mountains KOA, Newport, Tennessee

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $43.00
Overall Rating:

First, the positives: Friendly staff at the office. They had one of the best cable systems I have seen in years of traveling. Gravel roads and gravel sites (many other campgrounds in the area are grass sites and that is an issue when it rains). Now the negatives: Park is way past its prime. Site infrastructure needs a lot of work. Posts that support water and cable are rotten. I had to get a shovel and dig around the sewer connection to get access to the cap. There are a lot of old/abandoned campers throughout the park. The road coming in/out is a potential nightmare. It funnels down to one lane for quite a distance. If a big rig meets another big rig, someone will have to perform some tricky maneuvering to resolve the situation. There are several tight turns for big rigs. Finally, I-40 is close to the park and the highway noise is prevalent all night. I would not stay here again, especially at the current rate. We camped at Newport / I-40 / Smoky Mountains KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

Yogi Bear's Jellystone Camp-Resort at Raintree Lake, Scottsburg, Indiana

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

Greeted by very friendly staff at the office. Fast processing and escorted to my site. Larger units that are there for one night are parked on the front row, closest to the highway. Road noise was not too bad but you did hear trucks running all night long. Very good Verizon service (4G with 4 bars). Park is very clean. Numerous seasonal/long-termers but the sites were very well maintained. Bathhouse was very clean. Was able to pick-up 25 channels over-the-air. Would definitely stay here again. We camped at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Camp-Resort at Raintree Lake in a Fifth Wheel.

Comlara Park Campground, Hudson, Illinois

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $34.00
Overall Rating:

Stopped at the office to check-in and was met by a young man that did not seem to be very enthused about his job. I noticed a "road closed" sign leading into the campground so I asked the young man if that would affect me getting to my site (#6) and he said it would not. I proceeded to my site and discovered that the road leading into my "pull-thru' site was completely blocked by construction equipment. So, I had to go the "wrong way" to access my site and back-in. Was not a problem to back-in but many neighbors had their vehicles parked along the road and it made for interesting maneuvering. It sure would have helped the entire situation if the office had provided accurate information for accessing the site. Water hydrants are located in various locations. Someone had a hose and filter hooked up to the hydrant closest to my site. Creates awkward situation when you have to disconnect someone's hose so you can fill your tank. The site required almost 12 inches of lift to level my 5th wheel. My neighbors (both sides) loved their campfires. They let them smolder all day and all night so it was impossible to open my door and enjoy the nice weather. The dump station is quite a distance from the campground, actually located at the boat ramp. Definitely not convenient to dump on the way out of the park. Verizon service was ok (4G with two bars). Was able to pick-up 17 channels with antenna. It is a nice park that has a lot of potential but I will not stay here again. We camped at Comlara Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Camp 7 Lake, Hiawatha National Forest, Manistique, Michigan

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

Very isolated campground. Needed a place to camp for the weekend so this was what was available. Self check-in. Roads are tight with a lot of overhead limbs. Site length is adequate but it is difficult to back a large rig into the sites due to trees lining the roads. Was enjoying the peace and quiet until the neighbor fires up his chainsaw and cuts wood for two hours. Obviously, he knew the camp host. His site had five campers packed into it with 20+ people. Later in the evening, we heard gunfire or fireworks, not sure which. Verizon had 3g and one bar of service. Finally, folks in the north woods love to burn their campfires, 24 hours per day so be prepared for the smoke. Would not stay here again. We camped at Camp 7 Lake, Hiawatha National Forest in a Fifth Wheel.

Pleasant check-in experience. Site was close to neighbors but did have room to extend awning. Dirt road in front and rear of sites so expect dust during dry weather. We camped at Hideaway RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Delaware State Park, Delaware, Ohio

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

A nice older park. It is a long drive from the main highway to the campground. Site was in a cul-de-sac with very little traffic. Park staff is to be commended. A severe storm had rolled through a week earlier and there were many large trees downed. Also lots of fallen limbs at many sites. Most of the downed trees had been removed and the limbs had been cleared from the sites. The only negative issue was with the dumpsters; they were in overflow mode while we were there. We camped at Delaware State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Easy check-in process, greeted by friendly folks at the office. Site was of adequate size to handle truck and fifth wheel without having to unhook. Be aware of the mud if it rains. Nice site if it is dry but very messy if it rains. We camped at Fort Boonesborough State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Pride RV Resort, Waynesville, North Carolina

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $22.00
Overall Rating:

Very nice park with a lot of activities, especially for kids. Easy check-in with very friendly folks at the office. The only issue was the amount of space between neighbors. It was close. Cable service was very good. No need for satellite. Overall, a very positive experience. We camped at Pride RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Fernbrook RV Park, Longview, Texas

Date of Stay: December, 2015 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

Very friendly staff. Check-in process was timely. Camp host escorted us to our site. We were here for one night and used a pull-thru site. Pads are concrete and very level. All hookups were convenient and fully functional. Very quiet park about 2 miles from I-20 exit. Easy on/off of I-20. Park is kept very clean. Showers and bathrooms are very clean. Cable TV provided is adequate for overnight stop. It has 32 channels, including local channels. Good signal for Verizon cellular. My AT&T wi-fi device had a strong signal. The only thing that kept me from rating this as a 10 is the free wi-fi (Tengonet). This provider stinks. Never could get connected to internet with this service so I just used my AT&T wi-fi. I would definitely stay here again. We camped at Fernbrook RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Oak Creek RV Park, Weatherford, Texas

Date of Stay: December, 2015 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

Staff is very friendly. Awesome showers and bathrooms. Large single room to shower with lockable door. Very clean. Sites are concrete pull-thru with convenient hookups. 50 channel cable TV and free wi-fi (Tengointernet) but was never able to get connected. Have come to expect that with parks that use this service. Would have given a "10" but close proximity to I-20 generates a lot of traffic noise. Lots of truck traffic all night long. Overnighter's are placed at the front of the park closest to the interstate. Many long-term campers here but this park is kept extremely clean and managed the right way. Overall, a great place to stop for the night. Would stay here again. We camped at Oak Creek RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

South Marcum Campground, Benton, Illinois

Date of Stay: June, 2015 - $12.00
Overall Rating:

Beautiful park located about 5 miles from I-57. Lots of wildlife in the area. Check-in was very pleasant. Friendly folks at gate. Good paved roads wide enough for big rigs to maneuver. Site access is angled for easy backing. The 30 amp service was very reliable. The kind and considerate folks a few sites down allowed their yellow lab to run free for the two days we were here. It made it impossible for us to walk our dog (on a leash) in that area of the park. I told the park attendant but never saw a ranger during our stay. Verizon and ATT phone service worked fine. Had 10-12 over the air channels. Was able to get a satellite signal through the treetops but had to work for it. We camped at South Marcum Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Arnold AFB FamCamp (Military FamCamp), Tullahoma, Tennessee

Date of Stay: June, 2015 - $12.00
Overall Rating:

Fairly tight roads leading through park. Can be very difficult to back into sites due to trees and posts. A few sites are advertised as "drive thru" but that can be deceiving. Our site was supposed to be a "drive thru" but it had a fire pit in the middle of the drive. I inquired about moving the empty fire pit two feet so I could drive in but was told "absolutely not". The employee told me "it was my problem" on how to get my trailer into the site. Had to back my 5th wheel up a steep incline that caused the trailer to almost hit the top rail of the truck bed. The bathroom was old but clean. Nice location on lake but you need to be very aware of the site you pick if you have a rig over 26 ft. Satellite reception is possible depending on the site. No problem with Verizon phone service. The park WiFi worked well. About 6-7 miles from I-24. Not really convenient. Probably would not stay here again due to uncertainty associated with trees and site locations. We camped at Arnold AFB FamCamp (Military FamCamp) in a Fifth Wheel.

Council Grounds State Park, Merrill, Wisconsin

Date of Stay: July, 2014 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

The park is about 10 miles off of Hwy 51. You will go through Merrill and watch your speed (mostly 25mph). Definitely a speed-trap town. The park has a very large station for registration/check-in. Staff was friendly. Roads are very narrow with a lot of low hanging limbs. I would not attempt with a large motorhome. The main road in is very narrow with large trees on both sides. Not a good place for two large rigs to meet. Campground sites are dirt/sand with a picnic table and a fire ring. They are somewhat level. Will have difficulty backing large rigs into some sites. Again, watch for low hanging limbs. Electric at site. Water stations scattered around campground. Dump station on the way out. Bathroom/showers are nasty. Showers are very grubby and not sanitary. Looks like they have not been cleaned all summer. There are two showers in men’s side for the entire campground. ATT phone reception is spotty. Verizon is better. Satellite signal practically impossible due to heavy forest cover. Campground is very busy throughout the summer. Almost everyone is local folks and they love to burn wood. Expect LOTS of smoke day and night. The State of Wisconsin requires all vehicles entering state parks to purchase a park pass. For non-residents, it is $10 per day or $35 annually. This fee is NOT included in your camping fee. I will not stay here again. We camped at Council Grounds State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Coffee Creek RV Resort, Santo, Texas

Date of Stay: December, 2013 - $17.00
Overall Rating:

Rate is Passport America. Nice open RV Park with very nice facilities. Restrooms/bathrooms are first-rate, some of the best I have used. Wonderful tile showers. These areas are very clean. Very friendly folks at check-in. Great first impression. It is obvious the owners care about the park. Sites are paved and level. Utility hookups are very convenient. Satellite reception is no problem. AT&T reception good. Just 1/2 mile off I-20. There is a little road noise from the interstate but it is negligible. I would definitely stay here again. We camped at Coffee Creek RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.
