Tower Campground, Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Date of Stay: November, 2015 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

If you are looking for peace and solitude, keep looking.
If you have business or family in the area this is a good choice.

It is very noisy. The campground borders a busy free-way, I-29. There is an airport a few miles away catering to military jets which shake the camper on takeoff. We camped at Tower Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Searsport Shores Oceanfront Campground, Searsport, Maine

Date of Stay: October, 2015 - $88.00
Overall Rating:

This is a lovely oceanfront campground. If you want the best spaces try to get 1-15, as these are merely feet away from the high tide mark.

AT&T & Verizon both worked well from here.

There are few sights with a clear satellite path. The northern latitude puts the angle of the satellites low in the southern sky. I even had problems getting signal on my XM/Sirius radio while driving around. We camped at Searsport Shores Oceanfront Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

There are many things to see in the area. Nearby Belfast has a plethora of dining opportunities. There is a WWI dedicated pedestrian bridge across the harbor from which you can get some great views of the city. If you follow the path from the pedestrian bridge around the harbor front it will lead you through a working shipyard, past a day-sail schooner, then to a few pubs and restaurants.

Bar Harbor Campground, Bar Harbor, Maine

Date of Stay: July, 2015 - $44.00
Overall Rating:

This is a no reservation park. You can stay as long as you want. The downside is that all of the prime spots are grabbed in early June. This was their busiest summer ever, according to the office, and there was a steady flow of people in and out.

Satellite reception is spotty. This is a heavily wooded campground, and I would estimate maybe 10% of the spaces have a clear shot at the satellites.

Our AT&T hotspot connected reliably, but with low bars. Verizon signal was slightly better here. We camped at Bar Harbor Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Mainely Meats is just outside the campground serving a great breakfast, then BBQ and lobster for dinner.

Opposite the entrance is a lobster pound with a decent variety of food including whole belly clams, burgers, crab cakes, and of course, lobster.

When you check in, be sure to make a note of the phone number to Travelin' Lobster. They deliver a full lobster dinner (1-1/2 lb) including a pound of mussels & corn at a better price than most of the restaurants in the area.

Boston Minuteman Campground, Littleton, Massachusetts

Date of Stay: July, 2015 - $39.00
Overall Rating:

This was a 2 night stopover on our way to Acadia NP. It is a really nice park, heavily wooded. The roads wind through the trees and it looks quite intimidating for big rigs at first glance. But the roads are laid out well and back-ins are relatively easy. There is free wifi throughout the park, but it runs slow at peak usage times. Every site has a fire pit made from local stones, and a picnic table. Satellite reception is zero. This is a heavily wooded park. Both AT&T & Verizon worked well here. We camped at Boston Minuteman Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

We weren't here long enough to really evaluate the area, but if you turn left out of the park you will find Lazy Mary's cafe a few miles down the road on the right. They have pizza, hot & cold deli sandwiches, hot dogs and an impressive dessert selection.

Battle Row Campground, Old Bethpage, New York

Date of Stay: July, 2015 - $53.00
Overall Rating:

This was a decent campground, with a number of permanent residents with campers that looked quite run down. A few conversations with other campers indicated that satellite reception is only possible with carryout dishes, due to trees close to most of the sites. There are garbage barrels located throughout the park that are emptied every morning. Our site was rather short, and even with our 30' 5er back as far as we could go without leaving the pavement there was no room for our tow vehicle. The cost of camping here is greatly increased for out of towners, as seems to be the case at every county owned park on Long Island. I guess they don't want NYC people to consume all the spaces that the locals taxes pay for.

Overall, this is a good choice for anyone wanting to visit NYC, as the train can take you into Manhattan to Penn Station cheaply. There you can access the subway to anywhere in the city. We camped at Battle Row Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

If you like hot dogs, there is a vendor who sets up just outside the park that makes awesome dogs. He is there from noon till around 3 weekdays. You can't miss it, as it is a converted TT, red, with Steamin Weenie on the side.

If you are interested in history, Old Bethpage Towne is a mile away.

Pinch Pond Family Campground & RV Park, Manheim, Pennsylvania

Date of Stay: July, 2015 - $41.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed over July 4th, so it was a full house. AT&T signal is strong. This camp store was one of the most well stocked I have ever seen, even to double scooped waffle cones! We were escorted to our site. The long term camper's area appeared to be separate from the travellers section. Access to the campground was gated and they had a security car that passed through occasionally as well. We camped at Pinch Pond Family Campground & RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Seneca Shadows Campground USFS, Seneca Rocks, West Virginia

Date of Stay: July, 2015 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

The sites here are well spaced with a good layout. There were a few buddy camp sites, as well as pull through. Overall the campground is very tent oriented. We had a back in site that was a little tight, requiring me to pull the hood of the truck under the nose of our 5er to be clear of the road. Satellite reception might be possible with a carryout dish, but no chance with a roof mounted dish in most of the spaces. **This campground is located within the National Radio Quiet Zone, a 13,000 square mile area with severe radio restrictions to protect the Green Bank radio telescope and the Naval observatory. Don't expect cell service, hotspots or ota TV reception here. The nearest 4G signal I found was 20 miles north in Cabins, WV which is also the nearest staffed post office... which closes at 2pm daily. We camped at Seneca Shadows Campground USFS in a Fifth Wheel.

Staunton River State Park, Scottsburg, Virginia

Date of Stay: June, 2015 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

This is a very nice state park. The park attractions are about a half mile from the campground resulting in a quiet campground in an otherwise busy park. The only complaint we had was the difficulty getting our 5er into our pull through space. The sites are laid out with landscape timbers, and about 20 feet from the road the space had a 45° turn in an entrance that was about 10 feet wide. Getting in without puncturing a tire on the timbers was quite a task. Getting out posed the same problem as there was another timber sided turn to get out of the space. We camped at Staunton River State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Fort Hamby Park COE, Wilkesboro, North Carolina

Date of Stay: June, 2015 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

Another nice Corps of Engineers park. This campground is quiet with a good layout. The only problem is the poor condition of the roads. The very first turnoff has about a 4 inch drop going into a narrow, moss-covered road that gives the impression of being a service road that you really don't want to go down. If you have a long rig be prepared for curves where your trailer drops off the pavement. The road needs to be widened and repaved to accommodate wider vehicles. We camped at Fort Hamby Park COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Moose Lodge Family Center and Campground, Marion, North Carolina

Date of Stay: June, 2015 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

You MUST be a member of a Moose lodge to stay here. Most of the sites are occupied by permanent residents, only 7 are short term. The area for short term is unpaved and the sites are very close. If you have a 2wd vehicle you will have difficulty on some of the step gravel roads. We were the only ones in the short term section, but had it been full it would have been very crowded. We camped at Moose Lodge Family Center and Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Yogi In The Smokies, Cherokee, North Carolina

Date of Stay: May, 2015 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

Getting to, and into this park is a challenge. Big Cove rd is narrow & in bad shape in places with the road bank falling into the river in several locations. The road into the park has those suspension shattering high plastic speed bumps. I wouldn't take my camper in there again even if the camping was free. We camped at Yogi In The Smokies in a Travel Trailer.

Poole Knobs COE, La Vergne, Tennessee

Date of Stay: May, 2015 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

Awesome park. Well maintained and extremely clean. Current hosts are friendly and helpful. They called to make sure we were OK when we didn't arrive on the first day of our reservation due to mechanical problems. The site we were in, 56, was just perfect. Little path down to the lake where we took our chairs and watched the lake go by. Even when full on the weekend it was very disciplined. Most of the noise stopped by 10 pm or so. Now, the helicopters, on the other hand, were annoying all day when they were landing/taking off in our direction. The scenery more than made up for it. Boat rental close if you don't have your own. Fish right from the shore by camp too. Some people had their boats pulled up right by their campsite. We camped at Poole Knobs COE in a Travel Trailer.

This is a fine example of Illinois state parks. Clean, well spaced sites. If you want seclusion, this is the place. The nearest restaurants are 20+ miles away. Hunters, fishermen, and foragers will find a huge area for their interests. There is a separate equestrian campground within the park as well. Tips for other Campers:

There is a small market a few miles outside the park, that appeared to be run by an Amish family. I advise caution purchasing there, as everything we bought, with the exception of one item, proved expired when we noticed the dates back at the camper.
