Green County Recreation - Spring Lake Park, Jefferson, Iowa

Date of Stay: June, 2006 - $12.00
Overall Rating:

This place is set up perrrrrfect! My family arrived and were amazed by what was offered. It was super clean, well laid out and had more to do than we had imagined. The kids went skating on Friday night in one of the neatest rinks you could imagine. From talking with the rink manager it was built in the 20's and had sides that open to the lake. They had regular skates as well as inline blades. The manager gave us a history lesson of the park and even showed us pictures of days gone past. Saturday night was too busy for the little ones so we just sat outside the rink and ate free popcorn he gave us. We rented a couple of new paddle boats and a Kayak while the boy went to the beach. I think they were $7.00 per hour. The stand at the beach had icecream and snowcones to keep us cool. This place is set up for families and at no time did we ever worry about where the kids were or what they were doing. Our boys are 5 and 9 and even they did not get into trouble. We spent Sunday morning walking the trails and looking at the huge Cottonwoods in the forest. We did not fish but saw lots of folks fishing and one group had what looked to be a very nice bass. The park gates closed at 10pm and no one got through them after that. It was safe and secure. If the park was not enough, just across from the entrance of the park is a little country store that sold firewood, groceries and absolutely the worlds best icecream. Huge cones with the creamiest stuff on earth. Why can't we buy this stuff at home? There were horses next door and we got to pet them through the fence. The chickens got what was left of our icecream cones and thank goodness they were behind a fence because I think they liked the icecream as much as we did. We found this place on a whim but will continue to come back because we found no reason not to. It was safe, clean and had more to do than you could imagine. If you go there don't let the cornfields deter you, it is a forested gem in the middle of central Iowa. We camped at Green County Recreation - Spring Lake Park in a Tent.
