Thousand Trails / Chesapeake Bay, Gloucester, Virginia

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $1.00
Overall Rating:

Trees BADLY need trimming on the road to the entry gate and on the road in front of the Section C bath house - much scraping. Was told I couldn't park in areas marked for use by band members only, and EVERY vacant spot in Section C was so marked. They take your membership card to ensure you return to report your site selection, then give you the usual receipt, newsletter, etc. Selected a nice 30 Amp site and went back to the guard shack to report our site selection. The newsletter said that the "reserved" signs were all marked with the first date the site had to be vacated. Turns out that the bluegrass festival wouldn't be held for another 6 days, and we could have stayed at any of the "reserved" sites for our one night stay. The gate attendant apologized profusely, but we were already set up and decided not to move. This could be a great park, but they need to replace the toilet stalls, change out toilets with ones that don't require you to hold down the handle throughout the flush, they need to trim the danged trees, and they need to train their gate people (especially regarding special events). We camped at Thousand Trails / Chesapeake Bay in a Motorhome.

Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Hagerstown, Williamsport, Maryland

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

Office is a LONG away from some of the sites, and the escort acted like he was breaking the rules by giving me a ride back to the office to pick up my toad. Didn't think I would like the prefab-looking restrooms, but they were fine. Camp store has very limited hours before Memorial Day. We camped at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Hagerstown in a Motorhome.

Mission BBQ in Hagerstown was fabulous. Better yet, they strongly support the veterans community. Also had a great lunch at Benny's Pub. They are moving to a larger place soon, so make sure you have the latest info if you go.

Nice, quiet area of the park set off from the seasonal section. Golf cart would be useful to get from the site to the office, bath house and swimming pool. We camped at Hickory Hollow Campground in a Motorhome.

Usually Mapquest is more accurate than our GPS. Not this time, however. It led us across some narrow, 9% grade roads. The GPS would have gotten us there much faster and safer by exiting at Somerset . We went to the Flight 93 Memorial, and were so awed by it that we went back a second day. We had a GREAT lunch at Dough Girls Pizza in Rockwood.

Convenient to I-76, but not much road noise. Back-in sites are noisier. Lots of seasonals, but everyone seemed friendly enough. We camped at Green Acres Lake Park Resort in a Motorhome.

Not much here, but Youngstown is very close. Downtown Youngstown looks like it has undergone recent renovation, with several interesting shops and restaurants. Our favorite was Jimmy's Italian Bistro. Giant Eagle supermarket has a great selection of products.

Near JC Refrigeration, the manufacturers of Amish-built replacement cooling units for Norcolds. Fun to shop at E&S Bulk Foods, called the "Amish WalMart" by some locals. Near a HUGE flea market, but didn't go this trip. Modern shopping and familiar restaurants 10 miles away in Sturgis, MI.

Really nice, quiet park. Lots of birds and beautiful setting. No cable, but Louisville TV signal was strong. They were putting in the poles for WiFi while we were there, so that should be operational by now. We camped at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Camp-Resort at Raintree Lake in a Motorhome.

WalMart is about the only choice for anything. Jeffersonville is not far away, and has plenty to see and do, including a great selection of restaurants near the Ohio River. We ate at Red Yeti on the patio with our dog.

Ashland / Huntington West KOA, Argillite, Kentucky

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $60.00
Overall Rating:

Very nice place. It is closer to Grayson (one exit west) than Ashland. Grayson has a new P/FJ truck stop, and a Tractor Supply if you need LP. We got the longest site in the park, and the upgrade cost was worth it. We had a nice patio with a gas grill that looked like it had never been used. But to get to this site you must turn before you get to the office. If you don't you have to go back to the main road and find a place to turn around. No big deal, since there is very little traffic on the road. We camped at Ashland / Huntington West KOA in a Motorhome.

Convenient to Morehead and Ashland. If visiting the east side of Morehead (including Morehead State Univ), it is faster to take the second Olive Hill exit and take US-60 West.

Lee Hi Campground, Lexington, Virginia

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Bath house dated but clean. Nice pull-through site on lower tier. Fairly level, but just beyond the ability of my auto-levelers. Since the front was low, would have had to chock the wheels and raise the rear off the ground a little to get absolutely level. We camped at Lee Hi Campground in a Motorhome.

Wildwood KOA, Wildwood, Florida

Date of Stay: January, 2016 - $17.00
Overall Rating:

Rate reflects monthly rate. Stayed a month, but won't be back next year. Most of the regular sites are too small to fully deploy the awnings. The end spots have plenty of room, but they won't rent them for a single month stay. The large, premium sites aren't discounted, so it would be less expensive to rent two standard sites next to each other to get adequate awning room. There are also several wide sites near the bath house in the back, but these are reserved for staff (who haven't been recruited yet for next year). Several staff members have moved on to other locations, and mentioned friction with management as the reason. The friction wasn't apparent to me, and everyone seemed really nice and helpful. We camped at Wildwood KOA in a Motorhome.

The RV Resort at Carolina Crossroads, Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina

Date of Stay: October, 2014 - $34.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here four nights and loved it. Great people keep it looking like new. You can hear the train and I-95 traffic if you listen for it, but we didn't find them loud enough to be objectionable. Neither our RV760 GPS nor the one built in to our CRV would have ever gotten us to the park, but as always we verified the route with maps before leaving home. The instructions on the Web site are simple and correct, and we had no trouble finding the place. We couldn't find a dog-friendly restaurant in Roanoke Rapids, but there are two in nearby Weldon that have great food. It's true that this is not your place if you are looking for theme parks, IMAX, Costco or shopping meccas, but there is more than enough to see and do if you are interested in America's history. Sites are a little short for a 40 ft MH and toad. They do have auxiliary parking if you protrude too much for safety. DW can't wait to go back. We camped at The RV Resort at Carolina Crossroads in a Motorhome.

New Bern KOA, New Bern, North Carolina

Date of Stay: September, 2014 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

Rate is for deluxe patio site with KOA Kard discount. We love this camp ground and the city. We were escorted to our site which was under one of the few large oak trees on the grounds. I asked our escort about satellite reception and was told that he had seen many motor homes with the dish up, so he assumed that it was OK. I wish I had asked for a different site. Not only did we lose satellite every time the wind blew, we were bombarded with acorns as well. The cable is OK and free, but I've been spoiled with DVR service. I found out that our tripod wiring didn't work, so I also got a new project from the trip as well. We camped at New Bern KOA in a Motorhome.

Outdoor World - Harbor View Campground, Colonial Beach, Virginia

Date of Stay: August, 2014 - $1.00
Overall Rating:

Rate is for Zone Pass holders. Nice and quiet, except for occasional ordinance testing about 15 miles away. Managed to get good DirecTV shot at site B26. Not easy here - many, many trees. Didn't use Off quickly enough and got mosquito bitten every day. We'll go back, but probably not when it's hot and damp because of the bug bites. Don't believe your GPS when you come. One of ours tried to send us down a dirt road, and the other took us down a permanently closed road over a dam whose road had washed away. We camped at Outdoor World - Harbor View Campground in a Motorhome.

Outdoor World - Harbor View Campground, Colonial Beach, Virginia

Date of Stay: July, 2013 - $1.00
Overall Rating:

Enjoyed our stay again this time, but they continue to have water problems. The site we originally wanted didn't have water, and its neighbor had a hose strung to an adjacent site because it was dry too. They repaired one section of the park with new water and power, but they charge $5 per night extra to stay in that section. That section is not upgraded, just fixed. Not a big deal to go from $0 TT member price to $5, it's just aggravating. It also causes the other two sections to be crowded while the "premium" section is sparsely used. We'll be back, but not as happily as before. We camped at Outdoor World - Harbor View Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Williamsburg, Outdoor World , Williamsburg, Virginia

Date of Stay: August, 2012 - $1.00
Overall Rating:

Nice folks and well-kept campground. Lots of trees, so satellite is iffy, but over-the-air channels are adequate. Not much grass because of the trees. A little noisy from I-64, but site selection can minimize or eliminate this issue. Good 4G coverage from Verizon Wireless. Not a nice place to be during heavy rain due to poorly managed runoff, but campground drains quickly when the rain stops. Very dark at night, and flashlights are definitely necessary when walking after dark. We'll repeat, but only when the forecast is for clear weather. We camped at Williamsburg, Outdoor World in a Travel Trailer.

Thousand Trails / Chesapeake Bay, Gloucester, Virginia

Date of Stay: August, 2012 - $1.00
Overall Rating:

Great variety in types of sites. From secluded woodsy getaway sites to clusters of long-term neighborhoods, variety abounds. Verizon Wireless coverage is good, but only 3G. Good camp store. Only negative is that the toilets serving B and C section don't flush well, and require two cycles to get the job done. They may be early-version low water devices, or legacy fixtures that have been converted to low consumption units. Regardless, they all need replacing. This caused a Sunday morning surprise as all fixtures were unusable due to leftovers from previous patrons. We camped at Thousand Trails / Chesapeake Bay in a Travel Trailer.
