Asheville East KOA, Swannanoa, North Carolina

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

Nice folks and beautiful campground. A river divides the campground in two, with a lake on the back half. The office and patio sites are in the front half. We camped at Asheville East KOA in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Although most folks camp here to visit Asheville, we actually liked the town of Black Mountain better because it was much less crowded. Dined with our greyhound at The Social, Pomodoros, Cocula, Universal Joint, Village Wayside and Okie Dokies (all west of the campground) and My Father's Pizza in Black Mountain. All top-notch food and service.

Forest Lake RV Park & Camping Resort (Thousand Trails), Advance, North Carolina

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $1.00
Overall Rating:

Terrific Thousand Trails park. Good signage from US-64, with a turn lane eastbound. Access is through security gates. A passcode provides access when the guard is not on duty. Very nice at the reception desk, and offered to escort us after they caught up on some pending matters. We opted to figure it out ourselves with no major problems, although it can be tricky to correlate what you are seeing with the map. Auto-levelers worked fine, and power was good. GREAT adult lounge, and separate family / adult pools. Really interesting golf cart trails and a dedicated platform for loading / unloading carts from pickups. Most sites were quite roomy, and some are shaded. Plenty of others with no sun but great satellite access. They have pay internet, but didn't use it. Solid power. On some sites, utility connections are in front so you need to make sure you have enough power cable / water hose to reach. Bathrooms are clean, but there is no soap dispenser in Bath #2. We camped at Forest Lake RV Park & Camping Resort (Thousand Trails) in a Motorhome.

Thousand Trails / Chesapeake Bay, Gloucester, Virginia

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $3.00
Overall Rating:

They have greatly improved the interior roads by adding gravel. Bathhouses are clean but stalls and toilets need replacing. Fixes to the stall latches are iffy at best. One of our best trips. Plenty of 50A sites to choose from, although many are apparently out of service for repair (bagged). We camped at Thousand Trails / Chesapeake Bay in a Motorhome.

Mi Jalisco and Half Shell in Urbanna were good, and had patio dining. Wallaby's (across the Rappahannock via Route 3) weren't serving on their patio despite great weather, so we went elsewhere. Great view, and will try again maybe after Memorial Day.

Moonlight Lake RV Resort, New Bern, North Carolina

Date of Stay: November, 2017 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

Spent four nights as a last-minute getaway. Nice well-kept park that will continue to get better. Mostly long-termers and snowbirds who are very nice. Although the bathrooms were clean (and modern), there is mildew growing on the grout lines in the showers. This could be easily fixed by a daily spritz with a mild Clorox / water spray. My site didn't have cable, but I didn't need it because I had a great satellite shot. Don't know if other sites had service or if it is a future amenity. The new office / activity center is under construction and looks like it will be great. Roads are sand / gravel, but are well maintained. Manager is helpful and friendly. We loved it here and can't wait to return. We camped at Moonlight Lake RV Resort in a Motorhome.

While New Bern is the main draw for most folks, the wonderful village of Oriental is also just down the road in the opposite direction. Well worth a day for exploration. Our favorite restaurants in New Bern are Morgan's, MJs Grille, and El Cerro Grande. Favorite in Oriental is O-Town Pub.

Thousand Trails / Chesapeake Bay, Gloucester, Virginia

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $1.00
Overall Rating:

Trees BADLY need trimming on the road to the entry gate and on the road in front of the Section C bath house - much scraping. Was told I couldn't park in areas marked for use by band members only, and EVERY vacant spot in Section C was so marked. They take your membership card to ensure you return to report your site selection, then give you the usual receipt, newsletter, etc. Selected a nice 30 Amp site and went back to the guard shack to report our site selection. The newsletter said that the "reserved" signs were all marked with the first date the site had to be vacated. Turns out that the bluegrass festival wouldn't be held for another 6 days, and we could have stayed at any of the "reserved" sites for our one night stay. The gate attendant apologized profusely, but we were already set up and decided not to move. This could be a great park, but they need to replace the toilet stalls, change out toilets with ones that don't require you to hold down the handle throughout the flush, they need to trim the danged trees, and they need to train their gate people (especially regarding special events). We camped at Thousand Trails / Chesapeake Bay in a Motorhome.

Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Hagerstown, Williamsport, Maryland

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

Office is a LONG away from some of the sites, and the escort acted like he was breaking the rules by giving me a ride back to the office to pick up my toad. Didn't think I would like the prefab-looking restrooms, but they were fine. Camp store has very limited hours before Memorial Day. We camped at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Hagerstown in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Usually Mapquest is more accurate than our GPS. Not this time, however. It led us across some narrow, 9% grade roads. The GPS would have gotten us there much faster and safer by exiting at Somerset . We went to the Flight 93 Memorial, and were so awed by it that we went back a second day. We had a GREAT lunch at Dough Girls Pizza in Rockwood.

Near JC Refrigeration, the manufacturers of Amish-built replacement cooling units for Norcolds. Fun to shop at E&S Bulk Foods, called the "Amish WalMart" by some locals. Near a HUGE flea market, but didn't go this trip. Modern shopping and familiar restaurants 10 miles away in Sturgis, MI.

Ashland / Huntington West KOA, Argillite, Kentucky

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $60.00
Overall Rating:

Very nice place. It is closer to Grayson (one exit west) than Ashland. Grayson has a new P/FJ truck stop, and a Tractor Supply if you need LP. We got the longest site in the park, and the upgrade cost was worth it. We had a nice patio with a gas grill that looked like it had never been used. But to get to this site you must turn before you get to the office. If you don't you have to go back to the main road and find a place to turn around. No big deal, since there is very little traffic on the road. We camped at Ashland / Huntington West KOA in a Motorhome.

Bath house dated but clean. Nice pull-through site on lower tier. Fairly level, but just beyond the ability of my auto-levelers. Since the front was low, would have had to chock the wheels and raise the rear off the ground a little to get absolutely level. We camped at Lee Hi Campground in a Motorhome.

Wildwood RV Village (formerly Wildwood KOA), Wildwood, Florida

Date of Stay: January, 2016 - $17.00
Overall Rating:

Rate reflects monthly rate. Stayed a month, but won't be back next year. Most of the regular sites are too small to fully deploy the awnings. The end spots have plenty of room, but they won't rent them for a single month stay. The large, premium sites aren't discounted, so it would be less expensive to rent two standard sites next to each other to get adequate awning room. There are also several wide sites near the bath house in the back, but these are reserved for staff (who haven't been recruited yet for next year). Several staff members have moved on to other locations, and mentioned friction with management as the reason. The friction wasn't apparent to me, and everyone seemed really nice and helpful. We camped at Wildwood RV Village (formerly Wildwood KOA) in a Motorhome.

The RV Resort at Carolina Crossroads, Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina

Date of Stay: October, 2014 - $34.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here four nights and loved it. Great people keep it looking like new. You can hear the train and I-95 traffic if you listen for it, but we didn't find them loud enough to be objectionable. Neither our RV760 GPS nor the one built in to our CRV would have ever gotten us to the park, but as always we verified the route with maps before leaving home. The instructions on the Web site are simple and correct, and we had no trouble finding the place. We couldn't find a dog-friendly restaurant in Roanoke Rapids, but there are two in nearby Weldon that have great food. It's true that this is not your place if you are looking for theme parks, IMAX, Costco or shopping meccas, but there is more than enough to see and do if you are interested in America's history. Sites are a little short for a 40 ft MH and toad. They do have auxiliary parking if you protrude too much for safety. DW can't wait to go back. We camped at The RV Resort at Carolina Crossroads in a Motorhome.

New Bern KOA, New Bern, North Carolina

Date of Stay: September, 2014 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

Rate is for deluxe patio site with KOA Kard discount. We love this camp ground and the city. We were escorted to our site which was under one of the few large oak trees on the grounds. I asked our escort about satellite reception and was told that he had seen many motor homes with the dish up, so he assumed that it was OK. I wish I had asked for a different site. Not only did we lose satellite every time the wind blew, we were bombarded with acorns as well. The cable is OK and free, but I've been spoiled with DVR service. I found out that our tripod wiring didn't work, so I also got a new project from the trip as well. We camped at New Bern KOA in a Motorhome.
