Smokey Hollow Campground, Lodi, Wisconsin

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

Kind of pricey at regular rate for an overnight considering they have no sewer hookups. We were there on a late season weeknight so very quiet. Person checking us in had no personality. Looks like mostly seasonal campers here. Lots of cigarette butts on the ground and trash in our fire pit. Paved interior roads but narrow with low hanging branches. We camped at Smokey Hollow Campground in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Nice quiet little park on the Platte River. Water and electric. No dump station or sewer hookups. Only real negative is the $8 a day state park entrance fee added to the $14 camping fee. We camped at Buffalo Bill Ranch State Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Mountaindale Cabins & RV Resort, Colorado Springs, Colorado

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $26.00
Overall Rating:

Seems like a nice park overall. Friendly staff when we arrived. Some sites have views some don't. Some sites are satellite friendly, some are not. Some sites have basic cable, but it's really a basic DirecTV package. Lot's of trees and deer in the park. About a 15-20 minutes drive to Colorado Springs. Passport America members beware... They have a policy that they can and will move you to a different site if someone comes along, paying full price, and wants your reserved site. They did not tell us this when I made my reservation 6 months out. Thus our rating of "Bad" for service. Now, they did call us a week before we arrived informing us it was a possibility but when I asked why she was very evasive and ultimately told me a lie that they were doing some maintenance work. When we did arrived (and expressed our displeasure) the gentleman checking us in did extend the PPA discount to the full 5 days we were booked. Instead of satellite and view friendly site 84, they put us in site 9 which is large, level, shaded and has the basic cable. Too many trees for my satellite. The negatives though outweigh the positives in my opinion. 9 is right at the entrance so you get to hear all the traffic coming and going all night long. You have a great view of the trash dumpsters and get to wake up to the sound of campers throwing their trash in them a 5:30 AM. We camped at Mountaindale Cabins & RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Great park with excellent views of both mountains and the valley. Friendly and helpful staff. Facilities are top notched. Pickle ball courts, horseshoe pits and a putting green. You even get access to the pools and fitness center at the Angel Fire Country Club. We camped at Angel Fire RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Sumner Lake State Park, Fort Sumner, New Mexico

Date of Stay: April, 2017 - $4.00
Overall Rating:

Nice park. Most sites have a nice view of Sumner Lake. Main road is paved but campground roads are gravel. Nice dump station. There are 5 or 6 different campgrounds. Some primitive and some with water and electric. Appears to be only 30 amp sites. Great sunrises and sunsets. Lake would probably be good fishing if one has a boat. All sites have a covered patio... some are three sided adobe structures. We camped at Sumner Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

Oasis State Park, Portales, New Mexico

Date of Stay: April, 2017 - $4.00
Overall Rating:

Great park between Clovis and Portales. The newest sites (25 and up) are large pull-thru sites with water, electric and a covered patio. They all face out away from the park. Paved roads and gravel sites. There is a small lake for fishing that is stocked with catfish, smallmouth and largemouth bass and trout in the winter. The only negative is the dump site is closed and appears to have been closed for some time now. We camped at Oasis State Park in a Motorhome.

Oliver Lee Memorial State Park, Alamogordo, New Mexico

Date of Stay: April, 2017 - $4.00
Overall Rating:

Great park with great views. Roads are paved, sites are gravel. Site 25 is a former park host site and the only site available with sewer hookup. Our site (site 2) said max 35' RV length on the reservation site but we easily got our 40' coach on the site and could have got a 45' coach on the site. Quiet and beautiful sunsets. We camped at Oliver Lee Memorial State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The Dog Canyon hiking trail is an excellent, though difficult, trail. Most people only hike out to the line cabin and back. The steepest and most difficult part of the hike is beyond the cabin but the views are amazing. The full round-trip hike was 12.25 miles from our campsite and took us 9 hours. Be sure to visit White Sands National Monument while you are there.

If you're up for a challenging hike do the Dog Canyon hike. Round trip was 12 miles from our campsite and back and took us 9 hours. Steep and strenuous at times. Be sure to visit White Sands National Monument. On Saturdays and Sundays the park manager gives guided tours of Oliver Lee's ranch house that has been restored. Very interesting tour.

City of Rocks State Park, Faywood, New Mexico

Date of Stay: April, 2017 - $4.00
Overall Rating:

Great place. Nice trails. Hot showers available at the visitor center. Most sites are first-come first-served but some are reservable. Only drawback is the is no place to dump your holding tanks here. You can drive back into Deming and dump them for free at Valero but that's about a 50 mile round trip. Would definitely stay here again but would limit it to three or four days. We camped at City of Rocks State Park in a Motorhome.

Valley Vista RV Resort, Benson, Arizona

Date of Stay: March, 2017 - $2.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed here 2 weeks free with our Thousand Trails membership. Just had to pay the $2 a day 50 amp upcharge. Nice older park. Seems to be pretty well maintained. Gravel roads that do have some large depressions. Could use a little filling in. Power was stable and water pressure was adequate. People seemed friendly. Very nice approx. 1/2 mile walking trail loop right next door. We camped at Valley Vista RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Stayed here a week under our Thousand Trails membership. Only had to pay the $3 a day resort fee. Nice park. Large park. People seemed nice. Lots of activities and amenities (pools, pickle ball courts, etc). Some sites are gravel and some are asphalt. They escort you to your site after check-in. Power was good and water pressure was good. Would definitely stay again if in the area. We camped at Voyager Resort & RV Park (55+ park) in a Motorhome.

Verde Valley RV & Camping Resort (Thousand Trails), Cottonwood, Arizona

Date of Stay: February, 2017 - $1.00
Overall Rating:

We've been here a week so far and really like the park. Lots of closed sites due to electrical issues but it is apparent they are working on electrical upgrades. In fact, our post has both 30 amp and 50 amp outlets now but the 50 aml is not yet energized. Pool is closed for winter but we don't use pools anyway. Free WiFi in all three lodges. We are even able to get good WiFi from our site. Verizon is spotty from our site though. We camped at Verde Valley RV & Camping Resort (Thousand Trails) in a Motorhome.

If you like hiking this area (Cottonwood, Sedona, etc.) is excellent for hiking. Hundreds or miles of trails. I recommend the Black Canyon trail if you like a strenuous trail. Jerome is definitely worth a visit. Approx. 2 hours from Grand Canyon, Meteor Crater and Phoenix.
