Kirtland AFB FamCamp , Kirtland AFB, New Mexico

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

Few sites with trees and concrete pads. They all seem to be taken by long-term folks. Had to park in 'new' area which is gravel and has no shade. No WIFI while we were here. Weeds starting to get an upper hand on the staff: especially the goat-heads. (A unique sticker/weed that punctures bicycle tires, and when you get one in your foot or hand, itches like mad for a long time afterwards.) In any case, toilets, laundry room were clean. Staff was Very friendly and helpful. Has propane for sale during week, none on weekends. We camped at Kirtland AFB FamCamp in a Fifth Wheel.

Kirtland AFB FamCamp , Kirtland AFB, New Mexico

Date of Stay: January, 2016 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

Limited number of paved (concrete or asphalt) sites, mostly gravel without trees (not unexpected given New Mexico). WiFi appears to have been upgraded since January 2015 but still weak and spotty. Limited access (Eubank gate only open until Mid-night, Carlisle gate has metal barriers to entry so late arrival not recommended. Filled solid for Balloon Fiesta, however the rest of the year there seems to be ample sites available. We camped at Kirtland AFB FamCamp in a Fifth Wheel.

Limon KOA, Limon, Colorado

Date of Stay: January, 2016 - $37.00
Overall Rating:

Park management super -- we arrived late but they had the site well marked. Seven degrees when we arrived but water hydrant is well insulated and heated, was able to add water to coach fresh water tank without any problem. The bathroom was clean and warm, did not use the shower. Access is off the interstate and back a bit from the road - you have to watch carefully to see their entrance sign. Had recently snowed but the interior roads were clear of snow and mostly dry (no ice spots). This is the third time we've stayed here in the past year - always clean and staff is super. We camped at Limon KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Seems we are always in a rush so stop, sleep, and get back on the road. There are numerous fast food locations and fuel available at both the east and west exits for Limon.

Kirtland AFB FamCamp , Kirtland AFB, New Mexico

Date of Stay: October, 2015 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed on the graveled portion. Very few concrete and most of those appear to be taken by full-timers (even though the rules state 14 day except for a few exceptions.) Regardless, the spots are fairly level and the grounds crew has worked to keep the weeds (stickers called goat-heads) at bay. That said, the only issue we had is that the wind blows through Tijeras Canyon with a vengeance; while we were there we experienced winds in excess of 30 mph yet you can go North two miles and it will be calm - the venturi effect of the mountains and the winds coming through the canyon. Other than that a superb campground and easy access to all areas of town. There are two ladies who man the office, one is exceptionally pleasant, the other is, well let me just say I much rather deal with the other one. However, both are extremely helpful, knowledgeable and will do their very best to help you. We camped at Kirtland AFB FamCamp in a Fifth Wheel.

Balloon Fiesta during the time we were there so plan ahead. You have the Sandia Tramway which takes you from approximately 5500 feet up to 13000 feet; Santa Fe is approximately 60 miles north which offers a variety of sightseeing and other adventures.

Colorado Springs KOA, Fountain, Colorado

Date of Stay: June, 2006 - $45.00

Excellent escort coming in; clean campground. Close to interstate but did not really notice the road. Sites are rather close together; with 3 slides, my space was quite cramped. Access in, out, and within the camp is very good though. We camped at Colorado Springs KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

Limon KOA, Limon, Colorado

Date of Stay: October, 2004 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

Sites being renovated - Electrical improvements seen. Clean. Very friendly staff. Had a 'free all-you-could-eat' pancake breakfast - very well handled. Was noisy (right off the interstate and behind FlyingJ so got heavy truck noise from both sides) but tolerable. We camped at Limon KOA in a Fifth Wheel.
