Withlacoochee Backwaters RV & MH Park, Dunnellon, Florida

Date of Stay: December, 2016 - $13.00
Overall Rating:

Rate reflects monthly rate plus electric. We stayed at Withlacoochee Backwaters RVP for two months in late Fall 2016. The new owners are making the park as immaculate and friendly as possible. There are quite a number of vacant mobile-home and RV spaces where old junkers have been hauled off; trees are well-trimmed, leaves are raked and the grass is mowed. About half the park out by the highway is used for mobile homes and RVs and the half towards Lake Rousseau is used for RVs only. The RV-only sites are somewhat smaller. The owners, residents and visitors usually gather at the dock in the evenings and socialize. Unlike many mostly-residential parks we were made most welcome. Also, the owners threw holiday parties at the clubhouse. It was a very pleasant two months; we'll return. We camped at Withlacoochee Backwaters RV & MH Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

A small Walmart is on US-41 North in Dunnellon and a large Winn-Dixie supermarket and liquor store is farther north near the turnoff to Rainbow Springs. A laundromat is on Pennsylvania Avenue through downtown.

Holiday Campground, Ochlockonee Bay, Florida

Date of Stay: October, 2016 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

This was our second visit to the park, this time for a month.

The more expensive sites are of course waterfront while the less expensive smaller sites are arrayed around the perimeter fence. The waterfront sites and some of the perimeter sites are big enough to put out slides, awning, decks etc with room to spare. Some are sunny and some have shade. Some tenants are relatively permanent, some are just for a few months to a year and some are transient. All are required to keep sites clean and neat with only normal camping items such as chairs, coolers grills etc allowed; right now the park is almost full and there's no junk or random stuff sitting around anywhere. It's expressly forbidden to wash an RV, vehicle or boat in the park. WiFi works most of the time and is reasonably fast. The few outages have been I believe upstream from the park. Verizon is strong. The restrooms and laundry have been clean all month but unfortunately Hurricane Hermine took out the pool pumps. Office people were pleasant. Our only dislike was that the road through the CG is dirt and things got rather dusty during the dry season. We camped at Holiday Campground in a Motorhome.

Buccaneer State Park, Waveland, Mississippi

Date of Stay: November, 2014 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

Buccaneer State Park is southwest of Waveland, Miss., and is right on the Gulf of Mexico.

Hurricane Katrina destroyed the park and after a long reconstruction it reopened in November 2013. In addition to the 70 waterfront campsites it also has 206 full hookup sites complete with trash pickup, water park, store, big wading pool and day-use picnic areas. The only thing missing is Wi-Fi.

Although our campsite was described as a 51-foot site the paved pad stopped about 36 feet from the roadway with a steep drop-off behind. No problem for us but it might be for a longer rig. Also there?s an active railroad track along the north end of the park. We camped at Buccaneer State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

WARNING ? The railroad grade crossing on Clermont Rd. approaching the park has been built up and a longer or lower rig than ours may bottom out; there?s a warning sign on that road. The crossing on Lakeshore Rd. is level.

Fontainebleau State Park, Mandeville, Louisiana

Date of Stay: November, 2014 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

Fontainebleau SP is an expansive park on the north shore of Lake Ponchartrain just east of Mandeville. Of note is the Tammany Trace Rails-to-Trails, which runs through the park.

The park contains 121 water/electric campsites, five full hookup sites and 37 tent sites and is suitable for big rigs. There's free Wi-Fi but it never actually connected to the outside world in the several days we were there. We camped at Fontainebleau State Park in a Motorhome.

Fairview Riverside State Park, Madisonville, Louisiana

Date of Stay: November, 2014 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

Fairview-Riverside State Park is a couple of miles east of Madisonville on the Tchefuncte River and is a welcome change after making our way through the traffic and noise of the Lake Ponchartrain Causeway approach area.

It has 81 water/electric RV campsites in two areas and 20 tent campsites. A large area contains most of the sites while a much smaller area is right on the river and, in our opinion, very preferable.

Unfortunately, although Wi-Fi is provided the connection is easily overwhelmed and unusable.

An attraction of the park is the Otis House, which was built in 1880 and is now a museum. We camped at Fairview Riverside State Park in a Motorhome.

Bay Breeze RV On The Bay, Gulf Shores, Alabama

Date of Stay: October, 2014 - $43.00
Overall Rating:

Bay Breeze RV on the Bay is one of only two RV parks right on the eastern shore of south Mobile Bay and the view is wonderful.

Most of the full hookup sites have a least a view of the bay and two are waterfront and all have a concrete patio and a picnic table. There?s plenty of shade but that means your satellite TV may not work; our portable dish worked more-or-less at the very corner of site 11. Also available is a bathhouse and laundry room and free Wi-Fi that works well.

Everyone was very friendly and spotters spring into action to help campers get into or out of the back-in sites.

Payment is by cash or check, and no refunds are given for cancellation; a credit is given.

Bay Breeze is about six and a half miles down West Fort Morgan Road (Hwy 180). Look for the sign and the flags. We camped at Bay Breeze RV On The Bay in a Motorhome.
