Davis Mountains State Park, Fort Davis, Texas

Date of Stay: July, 2006 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

Our favorite campground in Texas so far, and one of our top five in 16 states. Very quiet and peaceful setting in a small valley. Tons of wildlife in the morning and evening--keep your pets inside at night and on leash during the day. Great hiking trails throughout the park and neat things to see nearby. Pets thoroughly enjoyed the area and kept us up at night barking at javelina and deer tromping through the wash. Local roads are great for cycling, we recommend Ft Davis and the observatory. We camped at Davis Mountains State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Houston West RV Park, Brookshire, Texas

Date of Stay: July, 2005 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

Disagree with previous posters. Unfortunately, there's not much to choose from in Houston, and we had to stop to see friends in the area. The campground was very disappointing. It was not paved, it was too close to the highway, and the area around the campground was a mix of poor neighborhood with loose dogs and industrial parks. The "lake" was more like a swamp. There were a lot of folks who seemed to be construction workers living there on a semi-permanent basis and who liked to drive around the small campground in their golf carts. Friendly folks, just a weird place compared to places where we normally camp--out in the woods. We camped at Houston West RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Laughlin Air Force Base FamCamp (Military FamCamp), Laughlin AFB, Texas

Date of Stay: July, 2005 - $10.00
Overall Rating:

This campground is located on Laughlin AFB, so you must be a DoD ID card holder to use it. It's one of the most disappointing military campgrounds we've used. There were no shower or laundry facilities at the campground. There was a nice base park adjacent to the campground, which had a restroom and was great for walking pets. The campground is small and the sites are close together. Fortunately, there weren't many folks there, so we had plenty of space. We camped at Laughlin Air Force Base FamCamp (Military FamCamp) in a Travel Trailer.

Fort Bliss RV Park (Military FamCamp), El Paso, Texas

Date of Stay: July, 2005 - $14.00
Overall Rating:

This campground is on an Army post, so you must have a DoD ID card to stay at the campground. It's a great place to stay if you're passing through on I-10. Clean, but packed in tight. Bathroom and laundry rooms very clean. Lots of space for pet relief in and outside campground. We camped at Fort Bliss RV Park (Military FamCamp) in a Travel Trailer.

Agave Gulch FamCamp (Military FamCamp), Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona

Date of Stay: July, 2005 - $13.00
Overall Rating:

This campground is located on Davis-Monthan AFB, and you must be a DoD ID card holder to access the campground. It's a fair campground, as far as military campgrounds go. There is a clubhouse with internet and a laundromat. The base pool and shoppette are within walking distance. Most sites do not have shade, and the sites are not very big. It's packed in the winter, due to the great weather. Not much grass for pet relief, most of the landscape is crushed rock. Great security with armed guards and fighter airplanes! We camped at Agave Gulch FamCamp (Military FamCamp) in a Travel Trailer.

Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area, Show Low, Arizona

Date of Stay: April, 2005 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

Very peaceful, beautiful setting. We had a back-in site that overlooked the lake. Nice paved area with wide paving around the fire pit. Bathrooms were very clean and we liked the private style with shower and sink in one room. We're not into telephone/internet/cable, so no points off for not having those hookups. Highly recommended for a quiet get away. One of our top 5 favorites in 16 states so far. We camped at Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

Kartchner Caverns State Park, Benson, Arizona

Date of Stay: December, 2004 - $22.00
Overall Rating:

Pretty new campground, only opened a few years ago. Well laid out and very clean and updated bathrooms. We really liked the hiking paths that started right nearby; you can hike as long or as short as you want. Lots of coyotes barking at night, don't leave the cat out! No cable/internet/telephone, but that's okay with us. Good security, park locks up at night. If you go, definitely call ahead and get tickets for Kartchner Caverns, recommend the Big Room tour first if you haven't ever been. Superb! This park is one of our top five in 16 states we've visited. We camped at Kartchner Caverns State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Roper Lake State Park, Safford, Arizona

Date of Stay: May, 2004 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

Roper Lake SP is a very nice, older SP campground. It's quiet and away from cities, which is what we like the most. It's not fancy, and doesn't have cable/internet/telephone hookups, but it was quiet and peaceful. We enjoyed the hot springs fed hot tub, and also took a drive up nearby Mt Graham, which had snow on it. We camped at Roper Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Picacho Peak State Park, Picacho, Arizona

Date of Stay: January, 2004 - $22.00
Overall Rating:

Picacho Peak is a nice little park. Too close to the highway, but a good overnighter. We went there for our second outing in our new trailer since it was close to home. Great hike up and around Picacho Peak. Huge pull-through RV space with no one even close to us. Bathrooms were fine. Not many businesses around the park, so make sure to bring enough supplies for meals. We camped at Picacho Peak State Park in a Travel Trailer.
