Ashuelot River Campground, Swanzey, New Hampshire

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

Well-kept large park with helpful owners. Site for all types, from tents in the trees, spots along the Ashuelot River, and open fields for dish TV folks. Available utilities vary but our full hookup worked well except when the whole town of West Swanzey went dark after a bad storm. Game room in the office building. Verizon signal was weak. WiFi available only near the office. Get arrival directions from the office - mapping programs will take you to RV-impassible covered bridges (there are 6 in the area). Good grocery stores and shopping north on State Road 10. The Ashuelot River runs slowly alongside the campground. Swimming is encouraged, and catchable fish are rumored to be upriver. Canoes and kayaks are available for a fee. Hiking in the Dickinson Memorial Forest begins at the rear of the Campground; use bug spray. The well-maintained packed dirt and gravel Ashuelot Rail Trail can be reached by paved roads for biking or by hiking through the forest; road with covered bridge is 3 miles north and the town of Keene is about 7 miles away. Trail to the south peters out to a mud path through unmowed grass. See the very knowledgeable campground owners for details about the many hiking places in the area. We camped at Ashuelot River Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Angie's Pizzeria, a couple miles south on State Road 10, had pies made with fresh peppers and mushrooms. To the north, JimEddie's restaurant had a large smoker out front but baby back ribs without the pink meat associated with smoking. There are several shopping centers north and west of the SR 9/SR 10 intersection. Flights of local whiskies are offered at the New England Sweetwater Farm and Distillery, 8 miles south on Main Street in Winchester.

Pumpkin Patch RV Resort, Hermon, Maine

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $42.00
Overall Rating:

This is a well-kept park southwest of Bangor, ME. Follow the signs, not your GPS, for the last few hundred feet. Our pull-through was a bit unlevel but otherwise fine. There are a few trees but satellite TV was okay. WiFi was inconsistent. Verizon worked well. Propane is available. The diner that used to be steps from the office is gone. We had a mediocre dinner at Anglers Restaurant a few miles from the park: the shrimp scampi was made without garlic and we should have known not to order prime rib at a place named "Anglers." We camped at Pumpkin Patch RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Mt. Greylock Campsite Park (formerly Hidden Valley Campground), Lanesborough, Massachusetts

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Park is in dense forestland in the Berkshires. The location may explain higher pricing than otherwise for a hilly, potholed park with 50 amp electric, water and graywater-only sewers. Price paid reflects weekly rate. Charges vary with demand and are higher on weekends and holidays. Honey wagon visits are $25 but free if you stay more than a week. Daytime visitors are $6 a head; $12 for overnight. WiFi is available "throughout the campground" but you must pay to have it at your site, $5/day for a 3 mps connection for 2 devices. Using a satellite dish was impossible through the trees and cable is unavailable. Verizon was weak but streaming video, data and phone calls worked. The pool is heated and there is a playground. The camp is quiet (except for a Saturday DJ) and close to Berkshire attractions. Owner worked diligently helping campers. We camped at Mt. Greylock Campsite Park (formerly Hidden Valley Campground) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Very good breakfast and lunch at nearby Bob's Country Kitchen, south on US 7. Tanglewood is about 10 miles away. If you plan to attend the Berkshire Craft Beer Festival, buy tickets online or days before the event; the $30 price goes to $40 on Festival day. The Lenox Rhubarb Festival was free, with $5 for a spoon to sample contest entries. Nearby Bob's Campers & RVs has a very competent mechanic. Park-sponsored activities include wagon rides for kids.

Schodack Island State Park, Schodack Landing, New York

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

Park is close to Albany and on the Hudson River. Heavily wooded but received some channels on dish. Only on-site utility is 50 amp electric. Lots of trails. Price was for nonresidents including a $9 reservation premium. Lots of trails. Rangers warned of ticks in the woods. We camped at Schodack Island State Park in a Motorhome.

St. Johnsville Campsite Marina, St. Johnsville, New York

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

The trains are as bad as advertised in prior reviews, day and night. Site 28, which seems to be one of the very few available to transients, is the closest to the rails and has views of dumpsters, machinery, and the inevitable trains. Tree growth prevented the entry of our motorhome without pruning. Utilities were okay and the dish worked. Vehicle washing is encouraged. Office was seldom open. Only check or cash are accepted. Nearby towns have a variety of festivals (cheese, garlic, art, etc.) but the area is mostly farms and upstate small towns. We would not return unless it was for a major personal event such as the wedding of a close friend. We camped at St. Johnsville Campsite Marina in a Motorhome.

Kerr Lake State Recreation Area, Henderson, North Carolina

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $17.00
Overall Rating:

Pretty lakefront sites but hard to find one both level and with working electric. Ended up no level for a one night stop and kept slides in. Dish worked. Two park employees were at work on the malfunctioning electric box early the next morning. We camped at Kerr Lake State Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Washington DC, Lothian, Maryland

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $71.00
Overall Rating:

Price was for the off season. Swimming pool wasn't open in early May. Lots of other stuff for kids. New owners have filled in some ruts but speeds in most of this large park are governed by the remaining potholes. Utilities were fine. Satellite accessibility is not available at most sites because of extensive foliage. Annapolis is more than ten miles away but this is the only nonmilitary park in the area. We camped at Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Washington DC in a Motorhome.

Pine Lake RV Campground, Bishop, Georgia

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

Lots of pines and two small lakes are featured at this camp. Lakes are catch and release. Small trees between sites. Trees prevent satellite use at many sites. DirecTV is available; plug in your receiver or rent one for $5 a night. We camped at Pine Lake RV Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Bishop is ideally located for traveling the Antebellum Trail - Madison is 20 minutes to the south and has beautiful houses and an outstanding walking tour with downloadable commentary. Don't miss Crowe's if you like smoked pork BBQ. Athens is 20 minutes to the north with the opulent Ware-Lyndon home. George's Low Country Table restaurant was excellent. The Georgia State Botanical Gardens were extensive and lovely.

Lake Pan RV Village (formerly Lake Panasoffkee I-75 KOA), Lake Panasoffkee, Florida

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

This pleasant park has a few overnight pull-through spots but is mostly a long-term facility. The sites are mostly open but we managed to get a tree limb in the way of our dish. Analog cable provided only SD channels. Wi-Fi was very good. A pretty lake with dock and porch swing is at one end of the park. Close to I-75 but traffic noise was muted. Access from the Florida Turnpike is easy via good county roads. We camped at Lake Pan RV Village (formerly Lake Panasoffkee I-75 KOA) in a Motorhome.

Carroll's Sausage and Country Store RV Park, Ashburn, Georgia

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Camping is in a large open field adjacent to I-75. Good spot for an overnight stay if some noise from the interstate can be tolerated or you can get a motorhome between you and the highway. Our spot was level. Gourmet products at the general store. Huge fireworks store next door. No problems with utilities but they are at the back of the sites. Not all sites have picnic tables but this is a "pick a spot then pay us" campground so look for what you want. We camped at Carroll's Sausage and Country Store RV Park in a Motorhome.

Sun-N-Fun RV Resort, Sarasota, Florida

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $90.00
Overall Rating:

If you're looking for a spot with more than 178 seasonal activities, Sun N Fun RV Resort is for you, and you will pay for the pleasures. If 18 shuffleboard and 15 pickleball courts aren't on your requirements list, then the place is pretty pricey. Our $90 gravel site was level, had all the standard utilities, and was open enough for a satellite dish. Earlier, we parked for two days at a $60 dirt site, also level and equipped but with trees blocking the dish. Wi-Fi was sometimes OK, sometimes not (which seems to be the industry standard). On-site personnel were competent and friendly. There's only one exit and traffic backed up for several minutes around the 11 a.m. checkout time. Attach your toad at your site to avoid congestion at the "hitching site". We camped at Sun-N-Fun RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The BBQ restaurant across from the entrance had uniformly awful reviews and we didn't try it. Lots to do and eat in Sarasota. Kacey's family restaurant is just a couple miles east and is a welcome change from chain eateries, which abound.

Fish House Inn and RV Park, Dayville, Oregon

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This is a pleasant campground with lots of foliage, well maintained landscaping and free range chickens seen eating squashed bugs off of RV front caps. All sites are back ins. Satellite TV was unavailable at most sites but might work at #6. Included WiFi was very good. There is no restaurant, fish house or otherwise, at the camp. The town has only two retail stores with limited stock. The Dayville Café, two blocks away, was a very good restaurant for such a small town. The John Day Fossil Beds National Monument is nine miles up the road, has beautiful and varied geological formations and is well worth a full day. Trails are mostly easy. Going west from I-84, filing stations are infrequent; fuel up in Ontario, particularly if you use diesel. We camped at Fish House Inn and RV Park in a Motorhome.

Mountain View RV Park, Boise, Idaho

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Distant mountains could be viewed on the horizon only in a few places in this park. Road noise from ten lanes of Interstate 84, unfortunately, was constant except for a couple hours around 3 a.m. The sounds through motor home walls repeatedly interrupted this writer's sleep; his spouse, amazingly, snoozed comfortably. The campground is separated from the interstate by only a 6' high wall and 5' of buffer space with some greenery. Campsites are very close together. "Free" WiFi usage was very restricted. Long term customers made up about 2/3 of the campers. Satellite TV was available at many sites. We camped at Mountain View RV Park in a Motorhome.

Moose Crossing RV, Mackay, Idaho

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

This camp is set on a plain near picturesque mountains. It is owned and operated by a youngish couple who put a lot of effort into the park. The pricing was for the Great American Eclipse weekend when nearby places were charging hundreds of dollars. The campground is ATV centric: a trail starts at the rear entrance and a station is set up for rinsing dirty machines (and motorhome windshields). Only a few sites have 50 amp electricity and many do not have sewers. Grass between parking places is kept green by diligent watering. WiFi was overwhelmed at times by the eclipse crowds. Satellite TV was fine. The small town of Mackey (two gas stations) is ten miles up the road but stock the refrigerator in advance as there is no real grocery store within 70 miles. The road to Pass Creek Summit is mostly gravel, goes through an interesting variety of territory up a nearby mountain, and can be negotiated in a passenger car. Other trails such as Dry Creek are serious high-clearance 4 wheel drive paths. Craters of the Moon National Monument is 45 highway minutes away and should not be missed. We camped at Moose Crossing RV in a Motorhome.
