Dakota Sunsets RV Park and Campground, Salem, South Dakota

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $34.00
Overall Rating:

Lovely oasis in the heartland of South Dakota, 30 miles west of Sioux Falls. Level, lengthy sites can handle any size rig. Knowledgeable office staff asks where your dish is located on your roof to increase chances of a site with TV satellite visibility. Ours worked perfectly. Chrystal-clear swimming pool. Mini golf, horseshoes, playground, meditation areas. WiFi best near front of camp. We camped at Dakota Sunsets RV Park and Campground in a Motorhome.

Friendship Village Campground , Bedford, Pennsylvania

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

This is a resort-type camp with facilities and prices similar to a KOA: two pools, shuffleboard, putting, etc. The pull-through site was plenty long but so unlevel our front wheels ended up in the air. WiFi was good, with at least six nodes in the campground. A long, dusty gravel road left our tow covered with dirt. We camped at Friendship Village Campground in a Motorhome.

Mayberry Campground, Mount Airy, North Carolina

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Mt. Airy was Andy Griffith's hometown and supposedly the template for the Mayberry TV show. The Mayberry campground packs a hundred or so sites in a tiered park so everyone has a nice view of two stocked fishing ponds and nearby forest. Most sites are satellite TV friendly. Picnic tables and fire rings are near shelters scattered around the grounds, not at each camping spot. We couldn't find WiFi service. We camped at Mayberry Campground in a Motorhome.

Nahkeeta Campsite, Martinsburg, West Virginia

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

This bear-bones campground is a multi-acre area in which all kinds of RVs are found, from the newest 45-footer to abandoned, rusty trailers overcome by growth. There are no picnic tables, showers, fire rings or screw threads on the sewer pipes. Water pressure was low. Credit cards are now accepted. We camped at Nahkeeta Campsite in a Motorhome.

J.O.Y. RV Park (formerly Sonrise Village RV Resort), Cocoa, Florida

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Close to I-95, this is a good place for an overnight stay or a couple of days. Very long pull-through sites. Heated pool and good WiFi. Some noise from Interstate not a problem with windows closed. Satellite TV okay from most spots. We camped at J.O.Y. RV Park (formerly Sonrise Village RV Resort) in a Motorhome.

River Valley Campground, Cherokee, North Carolina

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

The Raven Fork river is right at the edge of the park, with some camping from tents to motor homes available on the bank. The river and nearby waters are stocked with trout, and most places are "catch and keep". A Cherokee Indian fishing license ($10 for one day; $17 for two) is required. Most non-tent sites are on concrete. The park was comfortable when about 30% full. The spots, however, are very close together and a full park may feel crowded. The campground was well kept up with the exception of decrepit fire rings. WiFi is almost non-existent with slightly better reception near the office; even there, speed was in the 1-4 kps range (that's kilobytes per second, not megabytes) and useful only for collecting email. The campground is surrounded by hills; satellite TV is available only at a few sites. Camping is cash only. We camped at River Valley Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The town of Cherokee is pretty much a tourist trap. Entrances to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway are nearby. The best activity maps are found at the Park's Visitor Center. One-day express delivery service is not available in the area. Do not approach Cherokee from the east on U.S. 19 in any vehicle other than a car. It's narrow, twisty and steep. The route that goes through Silva is much tamer.

Givhans Ferry State Park, Ridgeville, South Carolina

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

Get away from it all at this well-kept state park: no satellite TV; no OTA; skimpy Verizon cell service; WiFi almost nonexistent. The few RV sites are back-in and may require leveling. The river bluff trail is an easy 1.5 mile hike overlooking the Edisto River. We camped at Givhans Ferry State Park in a Motorhome.

Coastal Produce in Summerville has lots of local items. There's a Farmers' Market on the way into town from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. Mr. Bill's, a family farm stand halfway to Summerville, has produce and locally-caught shrimp.

SoHi Campground, Accord, New York

Date of Stay: October, 2016 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

This camp has resort facilities such as an elaborate playground, fishing pond and pool. It is heavily wooded except for several sites in a field where satellite dishes can work. Don't arrive at night without arranging for camp personnel; there are complicated pathways and few lights. Don't miss the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts: it is on the grounds of the original Woodstock Festival and elaborately commemorates the event. We camped at SoHi Campground in a Motorhome.

Onion River Campground, Plainfield, Vermont

Date of Stay: October, 2016 - $37.00
Overall Rating:

This park had heavily-potholed entry roads, traffic noise and no Wi-Fi. Our 30-amp, no sewer site delivered only 109 volts of electricity. The few spots with 50 amp and sewer were occupied by long-term customers. A bridge on the only access road had a 27,000 pound limit, a legalism frequently ignored to judge by the Class A motor homes in the park. Our satellite dish had no problems. Verizon phone/internet service was spotty. We camped at Onion River Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Epicurean restaurant Rainbow Sweets in nearby Marshfield is not to be missed. In operation for 40 years, the owner-chef serves lunch weekdays and has pastries all day and adds dinners on weekends. Berlin Pond has a paved fairly easy 5-mile bike loop shared with vehicles. The La Moille rail trail was an easy ride. Pizza at Mr. Z's in Berlin was very good.

Notch View Inn and Campground, Colebrook, New Hampshire

Date of Stay: September, 2016 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

"Notches" in the local lingo are mountain passes and the camp has fine views of 5 of them. Dixville Notch, home of the first presidential vote reporting (the few residents gather at midnight to cast their ballots) is one of them. The park is ATV/snowmobile oriented, with trail connections on the grounds. Price reflects weekly rate. Wi-Fi is spotty; best near the office. This is the northern-most reviewed camp in New Hampshire. No satellite TV problems. The genial owner had local information and the Chamber of Commerce downtown (on the second floor of a bank building) had lots of maps and suggestions. We camped at Notch View Inn and Campground in a Motorhome.

The surrounding area has many interesting day trips, to look for moose (none seen), find covered bridges, watch falls and foliage, etc. Beaver Brook Falls on the other side of Colebrook is a great place for a picnic lunch. The harvest festival in nearby Errol had lumberjack contests including log sawing with souped-up chain saws.

Date of Stay: September, 2016 - $43.00

Atlantic Oaks Campground, Eastham, Massachusetts

Date of Stay: September, 2016 - $61.00
Overall Rating:

All sites are pull throughs. Rate is for low season after Labor Day. This is generally a very good park but for a few quibbles: getting a spot suitable for satellite TV is difficult (all those oaks). Most useable spots are occupied by seasonals or returning customers who reserved specific, satellite-friendly sites. Most other spots leave the camper with mediocre cable (standard definition, 24 channels, none of them premium) or OTA TV. Try several different staffers and you may find one who will try to find a satellite-friendly spot for you. Lots of mulch and gravel have been imported to alleviate the problems of the sites being on dirt but much of the gravel had dissipated by Labor Day. Sites have been leveled since we were last here two years ago but some spots have sharp drop-offs requiring rigs to be backed out. Wi-Fi and other utilities operated flawlessly. We camped at Atlantic Oaks Campground in a Motorhome.

The campground is ideally located for central Cape Cod activities; a paved bike trail (the "Rail Trail") is out the back entrance; a great seafood restaurant (Arnolds) is a half block away; the Cape Cod National Seashore Visitor Center is less than a mile distant; and other restaurants and attractions are nearby.

Wellfleet, a couple miles north, has the freshest oysters ever encountered, at Mack's Shack, and open air dining at Mack's on the Pier. Provincetown- the Key West of Cape Cod - is 25 miles north with fabulous restaurants and shops, and a picturesque fishing fleet wharf. The Lobster Pot is a favorite; great food with a wonderful view.

Seaview Campground, Cottages and Motel, Eastport, Maine

Date of Stay: September, 2016 - $53.00
Overall Rating:

The waterfront sites have lovely scenery of the Passamaquoddy Bay and Canadian islands Deer and Campobello. We parked "wrong way" to the utilities to get the best view. Extreme leveling with several boards put the front wheels in the air. Wifi was poor and Verizon unavailable except for a Canadian signal available to users of the company's international service. The Old Sow whirlpool (ask at the office for a map) can be seen a couple hours before high tide from rocks a short hike away. It was barely discernible the day we looked but several small "piglets" twirled sticks and seaweed around for a minutes at a time. The campground's onsite restaurant closes after Labor Day. We camped at Seaview Campground, Cottages and Motel in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Eastport is an old fishing town emerging as a tourist destination. There was a salmon festival the Sunday before Labor Day and a Pirate Festival set for the following weekend. Lobster are offloaded at the wharf a few feet from the picnic tables at the Quoddy Bay Lobster restaurant, an excellent seafood place. A lot of the town's restaurants close or reduce schedules from mid-September until spring.
