Myrtle Beach State Park, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

We have stayed at this state park several times over the years and have always enjoyed it. The roads are all paved but the sites are dirt and gravel. The sites were very level. We stayed on site 240. It was a big site but had a several trees in the middle of the site so it limited us on setup space because of our awning and slide-out. Our site was 30 amp electrical and water only. There are several full hookup site and 50 amp electrical in this park. We choose not to get one because it is an extra $15 a night. The bathhouses are very nice. Nice showers with doors in dressing area. There was also soap dispenser and hand dryers. You don't see these at every state park bathhouse. They had fans to move the air around and heat for the winter time. My only suggestion would be to add A/C. That would make them perfect. There are two dump stations at the front of the park. This is very nice on those Sundays when everyone is leaving. The camping store has just about everything you need for supplies and a lot of gift stuff. There is also several game areas with corn hole and horseshoes. Not sure if you have to rent the stuff or just sign it out at the camp store. All roads are one way so just know that when picking a site. There is a great beach access area with parking if you don't want to walk from the campground. There is a lot of picnicing areas and a fishing pier. There is also a store at the pier that sells bait and rents fishing poles. There is a fee to fish from the pier, but there was no charge for people staying at the campground. There are a couple of nature trails and a nature center that had several events going on during the day. The park does not lock-down at night but does have a security company that is patrolling the park and checking park pass at the front gate after 10 pm. We really enjoy this park and look forward to returning again. We camped at Myrtle Beach State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Dreher Island State Recreation Area, Prosperity, South Carolina

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Here are a couple of the things about our recent trip. The campground is all paved in the front Campground so you're setting up on the pavement which makes things a whole lot better. The pavement is only the size of the camper, so when you step out your stepping right onto gravel and/or grass. The road coming into the front campground is narrow but it is pretty much at water level so easy access in and out of the water for you and your kayak if you wish to take one. Facilities are very nice. all the bathhouses have been remodeled and are even air conditioned and heated. this is very very nice during the summer time. The boat ramps can get very busy on the weekends. there's one that is set up for large tournaments so the boat traffic in the area is very high so the water became very choppy so be careful when using a kayak. There's not too much around the Island so driving to get something was roughly a 10 to 15 minute drive to the closest town of Chapin. Groceries store (6 miles), Walmart (20 miles) The camping store/Ranger store does have a couple of items like ice, basic camping supplies, propane, charcoal, Etc. They also has some food items. they also sell live bait for fishing and rent fishing rods. The Back Campground is up higher than water level so to access the water was a little more challenging but the sites were very beautiful. Some of them were not paved and were gravel. There were several swimming areas around the State Park which meant accessing the water was very easy. There's a couple of hiking trails The only thing that I would say is negative about this park is the campground roads are really narrow. Backing a trailer into your site can get kind of difficult especially when people around you have cars parked everywhere. We camped at Dreher Island State Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

Poinsett State Park, Wedgefield, South Carolina

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

We really love Poinsett State park. We enjoy the campground, the hiking trails and the Lake. We do a lot of kayaking and fishing when we are here. They even have some family activities on the Long Holiday weekends. My only issues are the roads and lack of items at the Ranger office.

ROADS: they are bad. Lots of potholes and very narrow roads.

RANGER OFFICE: Wish they had a couple of small items for sale. (Ketchup, mustard, syrup, etc...) We forgot something and the drive to the nearest store is about 10 miles away. Also, the don't have ice for sale, so the same thing, if you need ice, 10 mile drive. Besides these two things, we love this place and will be back. We camped at Poinsett State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Wateree Lake RV Park & Marina, Liberty, South Carolina

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

It says that it's on the lake. the only thing that's on the lake is actually the dock, the restaurant office and the little deck that they have. All of the campsites are up a hill with no view of the lake. Actually there are houses between you and the lake and a lot of woods so if they tell you it's lake view it's not. The sites are mostly gravel, some grass but most of them were gravel. Most of the sites are un-level because they were on a hill. Took us a little while to get it situated but we finally got it taken care of. There's one bathroom facility and the doors are locked so you have to have a code to get into it. They were clean but the men's room only had one working shower. There were no real amenities at the location. There was a couple little playgrounds, one volleyball net that was falling down, a dock that you can't use unless you rent a slip, a very nice deck area and a small bar and grill. I was told there was a laundromat but I never saw it. They do have little dog bags station all around the park. There was full hookup for most of the sites but for $40 a night I don't really think it was worth it. No WiFi and poor cell phone reception. We camped at Wateree Lake RV Park & Marina in a Travel Trailer.

Point South / Yemassee KOA, Yemassee, South Carolina

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $57.00
Overall Rating:

It is right off of I-95 but we did not hear any of the road noise. The campground was the 2016 campground of the year. It is very clean and neat. Most of the camp sites are pull thru since most people are just staying for one night. The bathrooms were remodeled last year so they were nice. The office has a small store but it was very expensive. (There is a Family Dollar about 10 miles away near Hwy 17 and Hwy 21.) They have a small pizza/wing restaurant that will deliver to your camp site. (It was not too bad but very convenient while you are setting up camp. There is a small coffee shop/ wine bar that has wine sampling every night from 6:30PM-8:00PM. We really enjoyed the wine tasting but the service was a little slow because of the amount of people in the bar. They also have 2 craft beers on tap. The sites were gravel. They were clean and level. There is trash pickup at the site. There is 50/30 amp hookup and cable TV. I believe there were 64 channels. The WiFi was very good for our needs. We were not streaming movies, just checking email and Facebook. There is a pool that was very clean. There is playground, gem mining, dog park and a lake to go fishing in. There is a walking trail around the lake that is very wide and all grass. We camped at Point South / Yemassee KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

There are a couple of neat things to do and see in the area and that is why we stayed here. We went to the drive-in theater on Friday night. It is called Hwy 21 Drive-In. One of the only ones left. $7.00 and you get a double feature. We went to the Old Sheldon Church Ruins, which is very beautiful. We went to downtown Beaufort and Hunting Island state park. We will definitely return to this campground since we had very good experience.

Barnwell State Park, Blackville, South Carolina

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

First, this park was hit hard by an EF-2 tornado not too long ago, so they are still cleaning up from that. The campground is small in size, but does have about 8 FULL hookups. (50 amps and sewer). This is important since the dump station is out of service because of the Tornado. We did not know this until we got there. Lucky for us, we were on a full service site. The bathrooms were clean and nice, but I just looked around and did not use them. There was a horseshoe pit and community fire pit area in the campground. There are 3 ponds at this state park. Large one in the front, one small one that was accessible from the cabin area and one small that was accessible from the campground. The large pond and the pond by the campground are big enough for kayaks and small fishing boats. The campground does rent them. We caught a couple of nice bass, so there are fish in the ponds. There is also a nice swimming area and playground for the kids. They had one hiking trail open and there are several geocaches in the park if you do that. There is WiFi at the Ranger office and some small supplies. The only issues I have with this park are the Roads, the dump station and the location of the trash dumpster area. The Roads are in bad shape and potholes are filled in with ROC which is better than nothing, but they are still bad. The dump station being closed would have been a big problem for us if we did not have a full hookup site. Also, the dump station is in a weird location and could be very difficult to get in and out of. The trash dumpster area is location almost at the front entrance. I am sure there is a reason for this, but it was very inconvenient to dispose of trash every night. You had to drive to the dumpster. We camped at Barnwell State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Poinsett State Park, Wedgefield, South Carolina

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

Ok Camping Friends, We had a great time this weekend at Poinsett State Park. Here is a quick review. The campground was nice, but some of the sites were tight to get into. The lake had a nice swimming area with a lot of area to fish. There is kayak, paddleboard and canoe rentals for only $5 per hour. There are a lot of trails that are well marked. Some very nice mountain biking trails also. There is a beautiful spillway water fall for some awesome photos. Also, if you like geocaching, there are about 12 of them in the park. There is also a Food Lion and dollar General about 15 mins away in Wedgefield. Only dislike is that they don't sell ice at the ranger office, so if you need any, you have to drive 10 mins to the closest gas station. We camped at Poinsett State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Here are a couple of pictures from the campground we stayed at this weekend. The bathrooms, laundry room and pool were nice and clean. There is a Pavilion area with horseshoes, corn hole and boccie ball set up. Plenty of areas to fish. 30 and 50 amp hookups with full service on most sites. Also very nice playgrounds and tent area. Santee State Park, Santee, South Carolina

Date of Stay: September, 2016 - $10.00
Overall Rating:

Very Disappointed on this trip to Santee State Park. This was our first time on this site (#39) but we have stayed at this park many times. First, the site had several stumps insides the site area and two (possible) electrical panels in the site. The picnic table was over the boxes and we could not move it. This made for several trip hazards in our site. Second, the bathrooms were very dirty. I believe the staff was only doing the bare minimum to say they cleaned it. I went in after they had cleaned and it did not look any better.

The roads could use some help since there are several potholes in the park. We camped at Santee State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Lake Marion Resort and Marina, Santee, South Carolina

Date of Stay: May, 2015 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

This park for us was very nice. They are in the process of removing many of the permanent campers and provided more available site. They have full hook-up with 50 Amps. WiFi was great. We also enjoyed the pool which was very clean. We used the picnic area and the charcoal grill need to be cleaned but they worked great. We enjoyed canoeing in the cove and fishing from the dock. If you are a 'everything has to be prefect' camper, then I would not go here. If you want to enjoy all of the thing that have to do with camping (fishing, boating, swimming, relaxing), then this is a nice place to go. They are still working on updating and improving the bathrooms and some of the sites. Everything worked great for us! They do not have fire rings or picnic table at the sites. We camped at Lake Marion Resort and Marina in a Travel Trailer.
