Middle Fork Forest Preserve, Harry L Swartz Campground, Penfield, Illinois

Date of Stay: July, 2014 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

We have camped here many times. This is a great park. The campsites are well spaced and have some privacy. They are almost all level. The park has fishing, swimming and hiking and the hosts are always pleasant. It is generally better maintained than the nearby state parks too. We camped at Middle Fork Forest Preserve, Harry L Swartz Campground in a Tent Trailer.

Blanding Landing COE, Hanover, Illinois

Date of Stay: May, 2014 - $14.00
Overall Rating:

We love this park, but most of the reviews are accurate. It's a beautiful, remote park. However, there are frequent trains. My kids and I are train buffs, though, so we really enjoy the park. Although the sites are grass they don't usually require too terribly much leveling, and the sites are plenty large. The view of the river is beautiful, and you are not too far from Galena and Savanna, both excellent towns to visit. Except on holiday weekends there will only be a handful of campers. Last time we went was Memorial Day weekend, and it was mostly but not completely full. Lower number sites are definitely recommended so you can be further from the trains and have a better view of the river. We camped at Blanding Landing COE in a Tent Trailer.
