Morro Bay State Park, Morro Bay, California

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

Made reservations 6 months out. Very nice state campground that is well managed. Sites are fairly roomy, with decent privacy between sites. Water/electric utilities are in good shape. Dump station on site. Lots to do around here. Hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing, golf. This park is very quiet with almost no road noise. Definitely a hidden gem. We camped at Morro Bay State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

If you like to walk, downtown is 25 minutes away. The easier choice is a 10-minute bike ride. Plenty of good restaurants, use Yelp to pick some. If you drive, there is plenty of parking downtown. Hiking and mountain biking nearby. Kayaking down at the harbor, easy to set your boat in the water. Went rock-cod fishing with a few friends on the Avenger and caught our limit within four hours. Great place to hang out as a couple or with friends.

Butterfield Ranch, Julian, California

Date of Stay: February, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

As the previous comments mentioned, this park is in a remote location and is in dire need of maintenance. It's a huge park, but less than half has usable utilities. Check-in was easy, you pick your own site. Check out the pedestals before lowering your jacks, not all sites have working utilities. Plenty of dry camping on the back 40. The utility pedestals are in rough shape. The power drops between 115V-108V if you use major appliances. Recommend that you run the water a bit before hooking up due to residue/rust in the pipes. Sewer connections are at ground level but adjacent sites did not have caps covering the openings. The good? Friendly staff and a nice place to relax during the week. On weekends, the weekend warriors have the run of the park with virtually no rules. It is a dog-friendly park - dogs get to roam free and can poop on your site at will. So, if you like a park with no rules, this is it. Lots of dead trees - "widowmakers". While we were there, one 30 foot tall widowmaker fell on a 5th wheel about 100ft. away causing significant damage. The park is in a good location if you have a Jeep or off-road vehicle. Lots of trails. nearby. Everything here is just old and run-down. I don't think that we will stay here again - I like a park with at least some rules. We camped at Butterfield Ranch in a Motorhome.

High Sierra RV & Campground, Oakhurst, California

Date of Stay: December, 2017 - $26.00
Overall Rating:

Easy check-in, friendly office staff. Small park adjacent to Nelder Creek/Fresno River with some nice cascades. Stayed in a 30 amp full hook up site. Site was not very level and hookups are the "buddy site" type which is not very desirable. I had to pull nose-in to hook up. A trailer would have to run their utilities under the RV. Sites are narrow and fire pits are in a strange location. There is not a lot of room to maneuver, most travel trailers had a hard time backing in. The good things: A small park with good off-season rates. Well managed, quiet. No highway noise or trains. We camped at High Sierra RV & Campground in a Motorhome.

Woody Mountain Campground & RV Park, Flagstaff, Arizona

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $34.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed here for an overnighter during the last week of their season. Upon arrival, the staff was friendly and quickly escorted me to my site and made sure I was satisfied. The campground is in a nice forested area with tall pines. My site required some leveling but was in good shape. The utilities are located at the back of the site and the sewage connection is way at the back. ( I needed to pull up as my tow was attached). The previous comments about the train are a bit exaggerated in my opinion. While you can here some rumbling, it's not that noticeable. Little to no road noise. Overall, this campground is a hidden gem. I would stay here again. We camped at Woody Mountain Campground & RV Park in a Motorhome.

Miami RV Park, Miami, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $27.00
Overall Rating:

This is a decent, clean campground with easy access to the I-44 Turnpike. A trailer park and long term campers in the back with the transient sites in front. Easy pull thrus with good utilities. It's corporately owned and managed by onsite residents. Staff was friendly and efficient. Good for an overnighter. Only negatives were the excessive road noise from E Steve Owens Rd, train nearby and the park is lit up like a mall parking lot. So bring your ear plugs and black-out shades. Sites require some leveling. We camped at Miami RV Park in a Motorhome.

Covered Bridge Campground, Rockville, Indiana

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Needed a last minute reservation for an overnighter while passing through. Little did I know it was the annual Covered Bridge Festival in Parke County, In and the core was in Rockville. The park normally has a two night minimum but they accommodated us for one night. On arrival, a staff member walked me to the site and advised us where to unhitch the tow. The campground is small, has a community feel to it and is a great location for the festival. The sites are tight with minimal pull through. Utilities worked well and it was a fairly quiet place. I would stay here again. We camped at Covered Bridge Campground in a Motorhome.

Covered Bridge Festival 2nd Fri in Oct which last 10 days. Didn't get a chance to tour the bridges of Parke County but it looks like fun. The town of Rockville is the hub of activity during the festival with lots to see and eat. Antique collectors will be in heaven as each town/village in Parke County has stuff to sell. Plan ahead and reserve camp site for a better spot.

West Haven at Lake Erie, Fairview, Pennsylvania

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed here for several days. This is a privately owned campground that is part of a "seasonal" trailer park. The transient camping area is about 100 yards from Hwy 832. There is some traffic noise, but it isn't bad. I-90 is approximately 3/4 mile away. The park is undergoing some aesthetic improvements like new patios. The sites need some leveling. The utility pedestals by the pond appear to be new. We stayed on a back-in site next to a pond with views of nice sunsets. Sites could use some more gravel as recent rains made things a bit muddy. Strangely, we had to share hookups with someone else who was parked in the field about 8 ft. from us. I would stay here again but would not want to share my hookups. Several large speed bumps as you enter campground. We camped at West Haven at Lake Erie in a Motorhome.

Wright-Patt FamCamp at Bass Lake (Military FamCamp), Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $22.00
Overall Rating:

Convenient for overnight stay, quiet on the weekends. Most of the pull through sites taken by longer term campers. Camp host friendly and helpful. Power is clean and water pressure is good. If you leave before 0900 on weekends, nothing open except maybe Starbucks. Nice, secluded overflow/dry camping area closer to lake. Gate 26 closed after 1800 on weekends, must use main gate -12 which is a bit of a drive. Not many flights on weekends, so fairly quiet. We camped at Wright-Patt FamCamp at Bass Lake (Military FamCamp) in a Motorhome.

If assigned to first row and you have a tow vehicle, there is an empty parking lot at end of row to unhitch. The road next to the back-in sites is narrow. There is a small lake with fishing but the dock is still under construction. Nice recreation area good for quiet walks or biking, walking dogs.

Overall Rating:

This is a family owned campground that is well maintained. Quiet with shade trees. Sites are about 10-12 ft apart and level. Power pedestal in good shape, power was clean. All utilities were good. Able to get satellite reception. Upon arrival, was met by young lady who was friendly and checked me in right on the site. Great for short stays. Only down side is train track is a half mile away with 2-3 trains during the night. Checotah is about 4 miles away. We camped at Onapa RV Park and Campground in a Motorhome.

Mono Vista RV Park, Lee Vining, California

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

This was our second stay here. This is a privately owned, well-managed park that is convenient to the Tioga gate of Yosemite, Mono Lake and the June Lake Loop for fishing. Was in site 10 next to the office. The first row has 10 sites and are the only ones with full-hookups. Most other sites are back-in with W/E. The facilities are very clean and in good shape. There are rules, but the owners are dedicated to providing a nice park with decent amenities. Look at the site map here: http://monovistarvpark.net/about_us Sites 40-46 are very tight with little space between but back up against an open field with good views. Arrive before dark as lighting is minimal in the park. Friendly, efficient staff. Cash/check only accepted for payment. I reserve by email and that works well. Lee Vining has groceries, gas, bait/tackle, restaurants - most of what you need. Don't forget to stop by Mono-Cone. The chocolate dip cones are mighty fine. We camped at Mono Vista RV Park in a Motorhome.

Great home base for Yosemite. Excellent location for fishing-June Lake Loop within 15 minutes, good fishing to the north near Bridgeport. Fish cleaning station onsite. The town of Lee Vining has almost everything you need and is within walking distance of the park. The camp does have cottonwood trees so sometimes it seems like it is snowing. They do have rules for pets but overall is pet-friendly. Fuel up before you get here, gas is a bit pricier.

Overall Rating:

Update on this campground. We have stayed here several times and overall it is a nice park with a friendly staff. This trip, we discovered that there is a shooting range about 600 yards behind the park. Either that or some red necks that shoot what sounds like a cannon. So, if you don't mind 2-3 hours of gunshots during the day, this is a nice place to stay. We camped at Stagecoach Trails RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Spanish Trail RV Park & Campground, Moab, Utah

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $41.00
Overall Rating:

This is one of the nicer parks in the Moab area. It does not have many amenities and is geared towards adults who just need a clean, quiet park to stay in. Located south of Moab, about 50% of the sites have a shade tree which definitely helps when it's 105 deg. Utilities work fine, water pressure is high so bring a regulator. While they accept Passport America which provides a 50% savings, their reservation policies restrict the usage so check the PP America website for details. We made our reservations more than 3 days in advance so we ended up using the Good Sams discount. The sites do need some leveling but overall this park is managed and maintained well. Again, amenities are limited to washrooms, pavilion, laundry and a tiny store. This is a good basecamp for Arches and Canyonlands National Parks and is conveniently located 2 miles south of Moab. We camped at Spanish Trail RV Park & Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

When making reservations, do not take the back row, they are very close to high voltage power lines. Ask for a site that has a mature tree that provides shade, unless you have a satellite dish that is not mobile. Sites on the south end have young 10ft. trees with full sun. Convenience store, gas station, and restaurant are located across the highway. High winds are common, recommend you stow your awnings before leaving the site.
