Blazing Star RV Resort, San Antonio, Texas

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $60.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed 2 1/2 months while our new house was being built. We had a wooded site with a patio under the oaks, complete with a nice built-in wood patio bench. Lots of birds, and friendly RVers for neighbors. The grounds are well maintained; The poolside patio is beautifully landscaped. The pool is large enough for the facility. We had enough room to enjoy it on the 4th. We camped at Blazing Star RV Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Cleburne State Park, Cleburne, Texas

Date of Stay: January, 2016 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here to attend the Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth. Our campsite was incredible! It backed right up to the lake, and was huge. We are going to make a return trip in warmer weather. The full hookups were easily accessible and appeared to be recently updated. We camped at Cleburne State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Lake Corpus Christi State Park, Mathis, Texas

Date of Stay: November, 2015 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

We spent a weekend in the full hookup Javalina Loop. The sites were large and well maintained. All were semicircular pull-through. It was a short walk to the lake, which has a very new-looking fishing pier. We enjoed watching the deer, green jays, and water fowl. This is a very large spread-out park with lots of camping options. Along the shore are many picnic tables, many with awnings. I have lived in South Texas for a long time and can't belief I've never visited this beautiful park! We camped at Lake Corpus Christi State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Castle Lakes Campground Resort, Lake City, Colorado

Date of Stay: July, 2015 - $34.00
Overall Rating:

This is a nice quiet family campground at 9200' along the road to Cinnamon Pass. Even though it is a great place to stay for an ATV/jeep trip on the Alpine Loop, they are not allowed to be ridden inside the campground except when leaving or returning from an excursion. That keeps the noise down considerably. The fishing lakes are great for kids of all ages, and I appreciate that this is not the kind of campground that attracts "loud partiers." We spent two weeks in July here, and used the heater nearly every night; a very welcome relief from my south Texas summer. There is no TV signal (I don't use satellite TV on vacation), no phone signal, and only a very rudimentary WIFI signal around the lodge. The beauty of the location more than compensates for the lack of electronic amenities. It is a 20 minute drive into Lake City, but the road is good and the trip scenic. We camped at Castle Lakes Campground Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

A concert at the BBQ Station in Lake City is great. For the price of a ticket we got a BBQ plate at a picnic table close to the stage to see "Asleep at the Wheel." Also memorable is a drive to the National Forest campground and fishing lakes off of Slumgullion Pass to see moose in the evening...but keep your distance from them, please!

Balmorhea State Park, Balmorhea, Texas

Date of Stay: July, 2015 - $17.00
Overall Rating:

Great park for overnight stays. One of the best swimming holes ever! The bathrooms are just awful and need to be demolished and replaced. The state government just diverted major funds into the park system so maybe help is on the way. We camped at Balmorhea State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Fredericksburg, Texas KOA, Fredericksburg, Texas

Date of Stay: March, 2015 - $49.00
Overall Rating:

Our site was large, with a huge speading live oak tree and a little lawn for our dogs. The staff was very courteous; when we arrived our campsite wasn't available because the previous occupant had a slideout malfunction. They put us in another site temporarily and helped them resolve the warrantly issue and get them on their way, while checking with us to keep us apprised of the situation. For a KOA this place was roomy. We are 50+ year old empty nesters, but did not notice any "anti-child" issues. There were plenty of kids there having a great time and we were happy to see it. The rules about no unaccompanied minors and all children needing to be at their campsites after sunset is just plain common sense, especially with large RVs arriving after dark. Very dog friendly; our prissy greyhound even approved of the accomodations! We camped at Fredericksburg, Texas KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Avoid Fredericksburg on weekends/holidays/Spring Break; it has become unbelievably congested now. Having lived in Germany for 6 years, my experience is that the German restaurants in town are not very authentic if you stray away from the wurst menus, but Fredericksburg does its wurst very well! Also, if you want to climb Enchanted Rock go early in the morning. The park closes when its parking lot fills, and you will be stuck waiting on that ranch road.

McKinney Falls State Park, Austin, Texas

Date of Stay: December, 2014 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

Beautiful park and trails to be so close to a major city. Bathouses are in terrible shape and need to be rebuilt. Some trails need to be repaired and reopened. The roads and campsites need repaving. Many sites are not level, but it is a state park in a hilly area so that is to be expected. Some sites are wooded, others in the open. The campsites are spacious. We camped at McKinney Falls State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Guadalupe River State Park (GRSP), Spring Branch, Texas

Date of Stay: November, 2014 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed in the Turkey Sink Campground area. The state park has large, wooded sites, each with a large recently constructed tent pad. The electric hookups have been upgraded and the sites each have 50 amp service, though the state website still doesn't reflect that. Now that there is water in it again, the river is beautiful, especially with fall colors. We camped at Guadalupe River State Park (GRSP) in a Travel Trailer.

South Llano River State Park, Junction, Texas

Date of Stay: October, 2014 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

This state park is our favorite, and we visit Texas state parks frequently. No 50 amp or sewer hookups (a recently upgraded dump station is available), but a beautiful and relatively small campground. Most campsites have some amount of shade, and some of the sites can handle larger RVs. The attraction here is nature. Old growth native pecan grove along the river with wild turkeys, deer, and migrating birds including painted buntings. There are lots of trails through the woods and up into the hills; great place for kids with bikes. There is no TV signal and very few RF radio stations, but who needs that stuff here? The river is spring-fed, and the water flows clean and clear even when other waterways in the state are dried up. It's our favorite river swimming hole. For the youngsters (and those young at heart) the park rents tubes. We camped at South Llano River State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Lum's Barbeque in Junction is one of the best small-town barbeque joints in the state. It is the smaller place near the river, not the big barbeque restaurant near IH-10.

Junction/North Llano River RV Park, Junction, Texas

Date of Stay: August, 2014 - $31.00
Overall Rating:

If you want a full service RV park on the Llano River in Junction, this is the best one in the area. We stayed here over the Labor Day weekend because the state park was full. It is next to the highway bridge (US 377) and right on the river, so it doesn't have the same environment as in the state park but it is an easy full-service RV park. I don't care for highway noise, and there was just a little. Since the park is on the edge of town, there are plenty of lights on at night. The park is right on the river, so there are all kinds of aquatic activities available. While we were there the river flow was slow, so swimming wasn't a good idea at that time of year. We spent our time checking out our new trailer (maiden voyage) and spending the day at the state park, so this park served its purpose well. The folks who run the park are extremely helpful, and most importantly it is close to Lum's Barbeque! We come to Junction at least 2-3 times per year and were pleasantly surprised by this RV park. We camped at Junction/North Llano River RV Park in a Travel Trailer.
