Big Sky Camp and RV Park, Miles City, Montana

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $22.00
Overall Rating:

Small and rustic with a few permanent trailers but very clean and neat. Fast free wifi, free cable. Located 6 minutes from town (Walmart, Albertsons, casinos, fuel, restaurants, etc). Nice owners. Plenty of tourism brochures and postcards. Need a water filter (sulphur in the water). Close to the highway and railroad but buffered so I barely noticed. We camped at Big Sky Camp and RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

St Clair--Thousand Trails , St Clair, Michigan

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $1.00
Overall Rating:

St Clair is an older park with a lot of problems, and it's a real shame because the property is a wonderful, wooded area close to the coast, lovely towns and countryside, and minutes from a bridge into Canada. Management isn't the problem -- it's the lack of funds coming from corporate.

The main, glaring issue, IMO, is the broken security gate -- it is totally inoperable and is wide open 24/7, with no ranger manning the kiosk, which is hidden from both the road and the clubhouse/office. Anyone can get in at any time of the day or night -- and they do. Because the park is very close to a main highway and an hour from Detroit, this is an especially great concern.

The pool is closed -- it has been badly damaged by erosion and will be removed and, eventually, rebuilt. The clubhouse is well-maintained, and there's a tiny, basic store, breakfast available on the weekend, and a separate kids game/TV room. The water is full of rust -- even with added bleach, my laundry was discolored in the washing machines, so count on going off-site to do laundry.

There are other issues, including erosion and the usual crappy roads. I hope that corporate realizes what a gem they've got in St Clair and puts the money and effort in to revitalize the property. We camped at St Clair--Thousand Trails in a Fifth Wheel.

Bewabic State Park, Crystal Falls, Michigan

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

Small state campground, very rustic, wooded. Sites are tight and some will take some work to get into, but most are private and back up to beautiful forest. Quiet and peaceful. We camped at Bewabic State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Glen Ullin Memorial Park, Glen Ullin, North Dakota

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

Small local rv campground, close to railroad and highway (count on some noise). Basic, tight gravel rv sites, but the park has a large lawn, covered picnic areas and nice campground hosts. Basic, affordable. We camped at Glen Ullin Memorial Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

There's very little to do in the area, but the scenic byways are fun (gravel, not ideal for small cars). Huge sunflower, corn and wheat fields.

Thousand Trails Lynchburg, Gladys, Virginia

Date of Stay: May, 2016 - $1.00
Overall Rating:

Pretty rural location, about 15 minutes from Rustburg shops etc., and 25 minutes from Lynchburg. Most sites are spacious, and I think all full hookups. Well-maintained -- the most gravel I've seen in months! Some amenities, and the roads, are showing their age, but the staff seem to be doing their best. Verizon was strong enough to stream video during the week. We camped at Thousand Trails Lynchburg in a Fifth Wheel.

Natchez Trace Thousand Trails NACO, Hohenwald, Tennessee

Date of Stay: April, 2016 - $1.00
Overall Rating:

I stayed in a "deluxe"cabin for 3 weeks while I had some repairs done, then a week in a regular RV site. The location is just beautiful -- rolling hills, lush and green, picturesque farms. The park itself is large and sprawling, well-maintained except for the potholed roads, which are clearly a challenge to deal with due to the hilly terrain. Hopefully ELS will give them what they need to do a complete resurface. The ranger was super pleasant and helpful.

The little store/cafe isn't very well-stocked -- no basics like milk, eggs, juice, etc (the nearest grocery store is 20+ minutes away). The cafe menu is also very basic and doesn't include fresh fruit or salad. But the staff was very nice.

WiFi in my site near the clubhouse was surprisingly good, but in general phone/hotspot reception is poor. We camped at Natchez Trace Thousand Trails NACO in a Fifth Wheel.

Lake Tawakoni / Thousand Trails, Point, Texas

Date of Stay: March, 2016 - $1.00
Overall Rating:

This is a typical TT park. The usual amenities, a little worn, rough roads, dirt and gravel sites. Lots of annual tenants but neat and tidy. Nice and quiet on a pretty lake. Lots of fishing going on, which seems to be the major draw. The park is remote. Groceries and other basics are 15 minutes away. Stayed during a rainy week and the park is very muddy. The drainage system needs some work. There is some tree trimming and other repairs going on. The staff is very nice. We camped at Lake Tawakoni / Thousand Trails in a Fifth Wheel.

Tumble In RV Park , Marfa, Texas

Date of Stay: February, 2016 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

I really wanted to love this little rv park. It looks like someone with a younger, hip sensibility recently set it up with a lot of enthusiasm and then ran out of money and/or interest. I was there for a week and the common building was a dirty mess the entire time, including the kitchenette with dirty pots and pans and filthy wash rags. The picnic table next to my rig was falling apart. There is an active railroad close by and the highway, so bring earplugs if that's an issue for you at night. There is no shade or windbreaks.

That said, my pull-thru site was nice and long, the night skies were very dark and beautiful, and it was great being so close to Marfa, which is a hidden gem of an old town in the middle of nowhere. We camped at Tumble In RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Marfa doesn't look like much when you drive through on the main highway, but it's a neat old town with lots of creative culture (mostly on the weekend) -- galleries, outdoor sculpture, interesting shops, great coffee and restaurants -- with a lot of quiet buildings and neighborhoods in-between. The nearby town of Alpine is neat, too -- lots of wonderful murals.

Thousand Trails / Medina Lake, Lakehills, Texas

Date of Stay: February, 2016 - $1.00
Overall Rating:

The lake is now back up to 70% and beautiful. I had a back-in on the lake under a moss-draped tree. Absolutely pin-drop quiet, lovely wooded and grassy campground with gravel sites, most of them roomy. Fishing seems to be very good. Minimal lighting at night so skies are nice and dark. My Verizon hot-spot worked great. Friendly, helpful staff. We camped at Thousand Trails / Medina Lake in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Lots of pretty drives and neat old towns in the area. Tons to do in San Antonio (an hour or so). Don't miss Mission San Jose and the Riverwalk boat tour. No good grocery stores close by so stock up in Boerne (about 30 minutes away). The grocery store in Lakehills is fine for basics but expensive, and forget the produce.

Hidden Valley RV Park, Del Rio, Texas

Date of Stay: January, 2016 - $21.00
Overall Rating:

Very spacious sites - a former mobile home park. Lots of large shade trees and grass (both of which are overdue for a trim), full hook ups and cable, fairly level sites with a bit of gravel, good Verizon reception, clubhouse with comfortable living room area and several washers/dryers. Really friendly, nice owner living on site who is very particular about who stays in the park. Very quiet, dark at night, tucked away at the far end of a quiet neighborhood bordering a farm. Deer and lots of birds. We camped at Hidden Valley RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Verde Valley RV & Camping Resort (Thousand Trails), Cottonwood, Arizona

Date of Stay: January, 2016 - $1.00
Overall Rating:

This is my second stay. This time, all guests were concentrated in one area while the park was upgrading the electrical system. Sites are all gravel, level, and most are spacious. Very quiet - far from the road. Nice clubhouse with short-order cafe and a small store with DVD rentals. Large, clean laundry. Very good security and friendly staff. My Verizon hotspot worked fine. We camped at Verde Valley RV & Camping Resort (Thousand Trails) in a Fifth Wheel.

Valley Vista RV Resort, Benson, Arizona

Date of Stay: January, 2016 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

This is an older park in the high desert - all gravel with quite a few trees, a small clubhouse and pool, good Verizon reception. It's a little rough around the edges, as is the nearby old railroad town of Benson. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and they host frequent small events such as a homemade chili lunch and craft group. The security gate is out of order, apparently. Free cable hook-up is a plus. Very quiet despite being close to the highway. Sites are spacious. We camped at Valley Vista RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Nearby Benson has is an old railroad town with some history. The visitors center is excellent. Plenty of good shopping for basics, including a Walmart. Bisbee is the reason I stayed in the area - about 40 minutes south - a beautiful old West town with loads of character and creative energy. Tombstone is a fun stop on the way.

Thousand Trails - Palm Springs RV Resort, Palm Desert, California

Date of Stay: December, 2015 - $1.00
Overall Rating:

This is one of the "nicer" Thousand Trails parks in terms of amenities - nice clubhouse and pool - but sites are very tight. Lovely tall palms throughout the park. Very fine dirt mixed with gravel gets into everything (it's a windy area). My Verizon worked well. Close to shopping, casinos, galleries. We camped at Thousand Trails - Palm Springs RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Anthony Chabot Regional Park, Oakland, California

Date of Stay: October, 2015 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

This rustic regional park campground is in the hills above Castro Valley - a beautiful retreat above the city surrounded by eucalyptus trees. Twisty, narrow road through the hills so take your time and avoid driving at night. Very quiet and peaceful - nice and dark at night - spacious gravel sites (you'll need to do some leveling). We camped at Anthony Chabot Regional Park in a Fifth Wheel.
