Hi-Pines Campground, Eagle River, Wisconsin

Date of Stay: October, 2015 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

They have added add'l sites and amenities in kid's play area since our last visit. Rate is for 30 amp which had trouble keeping up with our 2 space heaters and coffee pot, necessities in the below freezing temps. The campsites in the older part of the park are beautiful, wooded and private but can be tight for larger rigs. The newer part of the park, next to a man made pond, of is wide open with not many trees. The dog park they have listed is just an open field with no fence. A short bike ride along the highway to the sidewalks that lead to town. We camped at Hi-Pines Campground in a Motorhome.

Hidden Meadows RV Park, Pine Island, Minnesota

Date of Stay: August, 2015 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

Rate is for water and 30 amp elec. The upper part of park is about 50 permanents/seasonals and those folks seem to have a lot of fun. We camped with a group and were placed all together on nice level grassy sites in the lower part of the park. Some shade trees and lots of open space down there, picnic table and fire rings at each site. There is also a rec hall available for use. The park was quite busy on weekend but was very quiet at night. They are apparently serious about controlling visitors as they keep the gate to the lower part of park closed at all times and charge for each visitor. The proprietor was very pleasant, his wife not so much when we inquired as to why the wifi password we were given wasn't working. We didn't notice any highway noise as noted by other reviewers. many in our group stated that they would stay here again. We camped at Hidden Meadows RV Park in a Motorhome.

Sudbury Court Motel & RV Park, Marengo, Iowa

Date of Stay: July, 2015 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

Nice little park. Some of the sites were not level but did ask for a level pull through site based on prior comments from others. Ours was very nice with a few trees for a bit of shade. There is plenty of space to walk dogs as they mow the grass around the perimeter of the park. While this is a good place to stay while touring the Amana colonies, it is farther away from dining and shopping. We camped at Sudbury Court Motel & RV Park in a Motorhome.

Updog RV & Camping, Mount Pleasant, Iowa

Date of Stay: July, 2015 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

We found this park when the one just off the freeway was full. Nice alternative. Very quiet small park. Owner lives on site and was always working around the place. There are some nice ponds on the property with expansive mowed lawns around them with places to walk dogs. Most of the back in sites have large shade trees. We used a more open pull through site. Didn't use the rest room/showers so can't comment on them. We did hear some train noise but not too bothersome. We camped at Updog RV & Camping in a Motorhome.

McFarland Park Campground, Florence, Alabama

Date of Stay: July, 2015 - $19.00
Overall Rating:

This campground is a great value- beautiful surroundings on the Tennessee River for less than $20 per night. We called ahead to make sure they had open spots (correct number is 256-740-8817) and selected a nice pull through site among the tall pines when we got there. There is a mixture of pull through and back in sites, nearly all sites would have accommodated our 36' motorhome. Plenty of space to hook/unhook dinghy just before the entrance. Sites on the far (newer) end of the park had no shade trees. There are no advance reservations so you pull into a site and go pay for it. They don't take credit cards so plan ahead for that. Got 4 local channels via antenna. Posted as no alcohol allowed in park and noted that adult beverages can only be consumed outside at your site very discreetly (in cup or a koozie). The local police do patrol the park several times per day. We didn't use the restrooms/showers but when we walked by them they didn't smell the "freshest" however it was 90+ degrees the week we were there...we would definitely stay here again. We camped at McFarland Park Campground in a Motorhome.

The Landing Point RV Park, Cape Girardeau, Missouri

Date of Stay: July, 2015 - $31.00
Overall Rating:

Very nice park. Spacious pull through sites with large shade trees. Large level concrete slabs with picnic tables. Well maintained landscaping with lots of open grassy areas to walk your dogs. It appears they are adding more sites at the edge of the park. Plenty of channels available via cable. Sewer hook up is at the back of the site, need a long hose to reach it. Note: when approaching from the south on I-55, it is easier to take the LaSalle exit to hwy W rather than navigate the roundabout that others have mentioned. We have stayed here several times and will definitely be back. We camped at The Landing Point RV Park in a Motorhome.

Nelson's Landing RV Park, Nelson, Wisconsin

Date of Stay: May, 2015 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

This campground appears to be new, wide open circular shape and very big rig friendly with lots of newly planted small trees. The bathhouse is brand new, just opened the weekend we were there and is the nicest I have ever seen - light and airy. Beautiful tiled floors and walls, private shower room with toilet and sink. laundry rooms are done but W/Ds had not been installed yet. There is a nice meeting room in a "tower" on the second floor - lots of natural light from walls of windows.

Note: Better signage needed about office/check in but you can check in across the main road at Nelson Creamery - which is a bistro/wine/beer/ cheese shop that provides great people watching...

The pull through sites are the ones with no trees planted behind them and can be accessed by driving across the lawn just past the bathhouse. The owner escorted us to a pull through site. There were elec boxes at all sites but not all of them had been completely hooked up yet so check that out before you start to set up.

When camping anywhere along the Great River Road you will encounter train noise as the tracks run along the river for miles. Unless you camp far enough inland, the chugging and train whistles/horns are audible. This campground is farther from the tracks than many other campgrounds in the area we have stayed at but the train sounds are still a reality. Got used to it by the second night. We camped at Nelson's Landing RV Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Hwy 35 is a beautiful drive thru many interesting small towns. Lots to do- antique shops, art studios, wineries, golfing, fishing. Many winding roads lead up and away from the River valley - great day trips if exploring on a motorcycle. The pizza barn is a unique experience. For gardeners, a visit to Stockholm Gardens is a must (15 min drive to Stockholm) They have pottery, beautiful display gardens and unique plants I have never seen anywhere else. In Nelson, BBQ place on Main St was awesome.

Big rig friendly. Called ahead and the owners stayed open to help escort us to our site then delivered firewood right to our site. Very clean, peaceful park with places walk your dogs as well as sit and look out over Lake Pauline. Between the people, park layout and setting, this park has a good vibe. Parkland Villlage Campground, Black River Falls, Wisconsin

Date of Stay: March, 2015 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

It can be difficult to find campgrounds in the north that are open year-round or early in the season. I called this campground looking for a place to stay and they offered to meet us at the campground and turn on electricity in a pull through site for us even though they weren't open yet. Very accommodating. Easy access off the freeway and there are several restaurants, a pub and a coffee shop all within easy walking distance. This park is connected to a mobile home park, appears to cater to ATVing and has quite a few seasonal sites on one end of the park. We didn't use any of the other amenities so can't comment on them. They appear to be big rig friendly but it is certainly easy to maneuver when you are the only rig in the park???? We camped at Parkland Villlage Campground in a Motorhome.

Topsail Hill State Preserve, Santa Rosa Beach, Florida

Date of Stay: March, 2015 - $42.00
Overall Rating:

There are two sections in this park, older and Palm Circle which has newer sites that are larger with more privacy. Lots of trees loaded with pine cones. Some sites in older part have cracked concrete pads but are generally adequate. There is a nice pool, small inland lakes for fishing. The beach and sand dunes are beautiful and are .7 miles walk from campground. We camped at Topsail Hill State Preserve in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

There is a fishing pier. Unique shopping in Apalachicola. This isn't a great beach for walking long distances. There are lots of private docks to climb over/under and no expansive white sand. Much more marshy and rustic than in other beaches along the coast.

Illini Campground / Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area, Carlyle, Illinois

Date of Stay: February, 2015 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

There were limited campgrounds open in Feb so not a lot of choices en route from north to warmer climates. We were the only campers in the park. Host was very friendly and escorted us to our site. This park would be a beautiful place to stay in the summer as it is wooded and overlooks a beautiful large lake (which was frozen when we were there). No water available so had to use the public showers - they were not as clean as I would have liked but perhaps hadn't been used in awhile? Some leaves had blown in from outside. Only a couple of pull through sites. Our 37' RV with car attached barely fit. Would be tight for larger rigs or you would need to stay in a back in site. Drive slowly as you enter and exit the park as there were lots of deer, some ran out in front of our rig. We camped at Illini Campground / Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Good place for an overnite. Right off the interstate. Open sites that are big rig friendly. Nothing fancy but adequate. The owners were very accommodating, offered to drive us to/from local restaurant when we asked about something within walking distance as we arrived just before dark and didn't want to unhook our car. Lakeside Casino Resort RV Park, Osceola, Iowa

Date of Stay: February, 2015 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Traveling from the north , this is one of the few RV parks open year round. Easy access in and out as there were few other rigs there. Some of the interior roads have larger potholes so check each row before pulling down one. There were some new concrete pads but others were very broken up. I noted others commented on lack of shuttle. It is only about a block to the casino. Downside, lots of goose droppings. Adequate for an overnight stay.
