First off let me state that I have been going to Monument Valley for about 20 yrs camping at Mitten Campground, it is my place of Zen. I try to make a trip out there at least once a year. This last April I had planned my vacation around the full moon and thought, wow, what better place to be with the awesome view and my tent. I was terribly disappointed and to my surprise, that when I took that right turn, all the craft booths were gone. When I got to the booth to pay the fee to enter the park, there was a lot of cars where the campground used to be. Upon exiting my vehicle, I saw that they are now building a good size hotel there. I could not believe it!! There were about 6 tour busses there and the visitor center was being remodeled, so it was very crowded and busy. The only thing that I could think of was that the Navajo's sold out to corporate America. A place that used to be a wonderful spot to be, has now turned into a HUGE tourist trap. The only consolation that I can give myself is that I am so glad that I got the chance to enjoy the place as it once was. I am sorry to say that I will not be returning and would rather keep the old photos and memories that I have from previous trips. We camped here in a Tent.
