Campsite is a somewhat level piece of land that overlooks the Mittens of Monument Valley. There were several sites that had large ramadas with tables available. Rough road into park that has porta-potties for bathrooms and no hook-ups, showers, or water available. Strictly dry-camping with incredible views. Hotel is just a 1/4 mile away. We camped here in a Travel Trailer.
We were in the “ primitive” campground at the Navajo Tribal Park Monument Valley. Primitive is a good word. It is a dirt area that the rocks have been removed from and it was a picnic area but it has great views of Monument Valley and there are a few level spots. No organization so you just park where ever suits you. The road into the campground goes through the visitor center area that is being remodeled with a hotel being built and through that parking lot that also is rough and dirt. The dust flies. From the parking lot the road to the camping area is pretty rough but doable. Thing is the cost is $10 a night and you are where the views are. The sunset is good and the stars at night are great. Worth the effort in my opinion. It also seems that all this temporary until the remodel/building gets done. We camped here in a Fifth Wheel.
First off let me state that I have been going to Monument Valley for about 20 yrs camping at Mitten Campground, it is my place of Zen. I try to make a trip out there at least once a year. This last April I had planned my vacation around the full moon and thought, wow, what better place to be with the awesome view and my tent. I was terribly disappointed and to my surprise, that when I took that right turn, all the craft booths were gone. When I got to the booth to pay the fee to enter the park, there was a lot of cars where the campground used to be. Upon exiting my vehicle, I saw that they are now building a good size hotel there. I could not believe it!! There were about 6 tour busses there and the visitor center was being remodeled, so it was very crowded and busy. The only thing that I could think of was that the Navajo's sold out to corporate America. A place that used to be a wonderful spot to be, has now turned into a HUGE tourist trap. The only consolation that I can give myself is that I am so glad that I got the chance to enjoy the place as it once was. I am sorry to say that I will not be returning and would rather keep the old photos and memories that I have from previous trips. We camped here in a Tent.
The campground is very rustic/no hookups. You buy tokens for the shower. The roads inside are cobbled with rocks the size of your fist, so it's a bumpy ride to your site. Sites are dirt/sand and most will need help to get level. However, if you want to pay $10 to sit on a cliff high above Monument Valley for a million dollar view then this is well worth it. We had site 23 which is the last site on the loop and we had an unobstructed view of the entire valley. The stars at night were phenomenal. I do not recommend a rig bigger than ours (35') and we were pushing it a bit. The driveway drops down and anything larger would probably drag bottom. There were lots of rental Class C's. Lots of Class B's and tents. There were about 5-6 Class A's our size and smaller. Would I go again, you bet I would. Beautiful even if the campground was very basic. We camped here in a Motorhome.
