Park was in much need of repair. Outdoor heated pool was a joke. There was a miniature golf course that hadn't had any maintenence in a long time, and it still cost to play it. Office staff only there a few hours in the afternoon. Absolutely love the area, but many other campgrounds in the area rate much higher than this one. We camped here in a camper.

Very nice campground in the heart of "fourteener" country -- incredible views of the mountains and the Upper Arkansas Valley. Terraced sites with some shade, there's a small stream running thru that separates the tent area from the main area. Good, level sites, some a bit close together, though. Nice clean restrooms, very well maintained. They also have the only outdoor heated pool in the area. The campground is located about 10 miles west of Salida, and there is a hot springs pool in Salida, as well as up the valley at Mt Princeton Hot Springs. Heart of the Rockies is a very good base camp area for the sites of the Upper Arkansas Valley, the Monarch Pass/Ski area, and the upper San Luis Valley. There are incredible hiking and 4x4 trails in this area, probably the best in Colorado. And if you are in to river running, this is absolutely the place to be! We camped here in a camper.
We picked this camp because of dog rules. It turned out to be a great place. We had the top teired site number 30 and it was great. There where no permanent campers or loggers. If you atv there are trails right outside the campground. Monarch Pass was just up the road. The aspen where turning and the views where outstanding. The owner took over from her brother who died. She lived on the site when she was a kid, and spoke of all the history. We camped here in a Motorhome.
This park was almost filled with permanent people working in the logging industry. The spaces were very narrow and where our door opened was a fire ring, never could position the RV away from that fire ring. The logging trucks start up very early in the morning and there is barely room for them maneuver around the RVs. The showers were very muddy. They are building some new sites so possibly it will get better but we would not stay there again. We camped here in a camper.
