Our family camped here in a 35 foot motorhome for 4 nights in June 2008. It was a last minute trip for us and we called that morning to see if they had availability. The nice woman who answered said come on over! Once we arrived, she escorted us to our campsite. Full hook ups, including sewer. Wide site with picnic table. No ground fires are allowed; also, no dogs allowed. Plus, they only accepted cash or check, but there was an ATM near by. We loved this campground. Beautiful birds, lemurs, ducks on display. Our kids, ages 7, 5, and 3 had a blast. Every morning they looked forward to going over and talking with the birds. The beach was a short bike ride away. Dairy Queen was across the street and many restaurants and stores within biking distance. We cannot wait to come back to this campground. Many people said that the winter months are very busy. The campground was not even half full while we were here. We camped here in a Motorhome.

This campground started in 1964, and has something like 80 permanent trailer sites and 250 travel trailer sites. We were put in a section with about ten others campers and tents, but this campground is huge with many different parts. The workers were very friendly, and you followed someone on a golf cart to your site. There are tropical birds all over the park and little duck ponds. The bathrooms could use an update but not very many people use them especially those living or staying in the park models. You can walk to the beach (long walk better taking a bike). The Sanibel beaches are sandy and beautiful, and they do have waves not like the Keys. Shells everywhere, and you see everyone bending over to collect them. They have boat rentals available at the Marina. This campground is the only one on Sanibel Island, and you can easily bike to everything – shops, restaurants, groceries and sites. We did drive to the Ding Wildlife Refuge and the Shell Museum but everything else we biked too – nice and level and wide bike lanes on both sides of the roads away from the main road. We did have reservations but a number of campers came in and were able to get a site without them. It is May and not there busiest time of year which is January through the beginning of April, and reservations are hard to come by at those times of the year. Their low season starts in June and the price drops down ten dollars for full hookups. Price is high, but the park is cute and it is on Sanibel and if you stayed in the parks across the bridge in Ft. Myers you would have to pay the $6 toll everyday. Enjoyable stay ! We camped here in a Motorhome.
Somewhat unusual park with cages of exotic birds and monkeys scattered here and there. Half mile walk to the beach, easy bike ride. Aside from long delays at check-in, the park functioned smoothly. It was quiet, the site was ample in size and shaded. Restrooms and showers were adequate but not first class. About half long-term campers who seemed to enjoy a sense of community. WiFi was functional but we were at the edge of reception and lost the connection regularly. Very convenient location; bikes and walking will suffice for most. Note: no credit cards accepted so bring a check. Ants were a nuisance but not a major hassle, very few mosquitoes and no-see-ums this time of year. We will return and enjoyed this unique island campground. We camped here in a Travel Trailer.
A quiet, well maintained place. Sites much larger than average. Free WiFi was, fast, and faultless. We were located close to the Lemur/bird cages. The noises did not bother us in the least. The inmates seemed content and well cared for. Beach access is within walking distance for most. About .5 mile or so. Worth the walk. We would reccomend Jerry's Foods for an excellent, well-priced lunch place. It's head and shoulders over most of the other places on the island... My only gripe is that there is no space available in Jan/Feb.... We camped here in a Travel Trailer.
Its the only camping area available but it was a charming place to camp. We were next to the tent area that was a large grassy and tree filled area much like a park. This is mostly a trailer park with a section for transient campers. A big negative is only one laundry site near the middle of the park-home section and no place to park if we wanted to drive to it will the laundry. We were a good distance from the beach, farther than it looks on the map. We camped here in a Fifth Wheel.
We chose Periwinkle Park because we love Sanibel, and it's the only campground on the island. We found out we also loved Periwinkle Park! My kids rode their bikes all over the campground, visited the birds and lemurs, and just had a great time. The campground isn't on the beach, but the bike ride to the closest public beach access was very close and easy. The bath houses were acceptable, although not new, but fine. Two negatives were no pool (no big deal, you've got the ocean!), but a more important negative was no cable TV which is important to my family. We love the laid-back feel to the campground and the island. Great restaurants! It was the one of the best, most relaxing vacations we've ever had. We would definitely go back - maybe even next spring! We camped here in a Travel Trailer.
We stayed at the Periwinkle Campground on Sanibel April 21-23 of 2006. We had a pretty good time. The campground: Average with full hookups, no cable. Our campsite was average size, backed up to a small creek and across the creek, hidden by trees but still visible, was what appeared to be a water or sewage treatment plant. Not sure if it was the water in the creek or the treatment plant, but we noticed a faint sewage/sulfur smell. The bathrooms were not air-conditioned and were a little old, but clean. The aviary was impressive with lots of parrots and different species of birds. They also had some Madagascar Brown and Ring Tailed Lemurs. The Ring Tailed Lemurs looked exactly like the ones from the movie Madagascar. I kept singing "I like to move it, move it" every time I saw them (my wife was not impressed by my singing). This would be a big bonus if we had children. We had tent campers on both sides of us, which doesn't bother me except at night I worry that my TV might be too loud with the AC running. Overall we would stay there again. We didn't really like Sanibel that much though. The people we interacted with outside of the campground seemed to be very uppity. We loved the convenience of the beach and the bike trails all over the island, but we will probably try a few more FL beach destinations to see if we can find one we like better. We camped here in a Travel Trailer.
