ALERT: Probably the worst night we have ever experienced in over 20 years of camping. We were there with a large group of friends. We rented 90% of the campground. We were all professionals , married with small children.. From the time we pulled in the harassment started. Do yourself a favor, the Maine State Police a favor and don't ever camp there. They were confrontational, rude, eccentric, obscene and scary people. They spyed on us, confronted us for minor issues and just when we were ready to spend our last night there, the owner walked up to our site where we all were sitting around the campfire and screamed obscenities because one of the dogs was loose. ( a black Lab). We tried to calm him but to no avail. It escalated to a confrontation where he spayed us with mace. The "Staties " arrived and they took the "owners" side. It was awful. They wanted to kick us all out at 10:00 p.m. They arrested one of our party as the "sacrificial Lamb' and let the rest of us stay for the night. Nice of them. All charges were dropped after the fact but the memory of a horrible night remains. Oh yeah part of the court sentencing is we could not go back there " for over a Year" Fat chance of that happening! Can't believe this place is still open. We camped here in a Tent.
In the summer of 2009, we visited many campgrounds looking for a seasonal site that would meet our desired criteria. We were lucky enough to find Shannon's Sanctuary, which was quiet, clean and the sites were good sized to fit our 5th wheel and still have plenty of room. The owners are extremely helpful and friendly and we look for to our third season next year. We camped here in a Fifth Wheel.
Shannons is truly a sanctuary, it has clean bathrooms and hot clean showers. It is quiet and peaceful and the owners are very friendly and helpful. I would recommend this place over and over. We camped here in a Travel Trailer.
If you plan on visiting this campground with a large group of people I recommend finding somewhere else to stay. My husband and I recently stayed with a group of friends and had a horrible experience. The owners were rude, unreasonable, condescending and literally shouted obscenities at us when our group did not immediately get in our tents during their quiet hours. I have never been treated so rudely in my adult life and will never return. The majority of our group left a day early rather than let the owners continue to be confrontational. I am very disappointed. We camped here in a Tent.
From the moment we spoke on the phone, the management here was so friendly. They answered all our questions and were so hospitable. The camp site is nicely maintained. The river is very pretty but there has been so much rain that the beach was under water. The showers were clean and hot. The staff was so friendly. There is a bit of lack of privacy between tent sites, and we had to be very careful not to keep our neighbors up. However, all in all, we felt the site was great ,and we had a wonderful time. They are so sweet and we will come back again and camp by the river...which is a bit more private. We camped here in a Tent.

On July 25th we checked in at Shannons Sanctuary. Our group consisted of 3 couples and our 5 year old child. We are all avid campers and responsible, respectable adults. We were looking forward to a relaxing trip on the beautiful Saco River. Our trip was anything but relaxing and enjoyable. The owners were confrontational, condescending, rude, and unprofessional to say the least. It appeared that they were trying to cause conflict from the time we pulled in until the time we pulled out. We were harassed, yelled at, spied on and provoked. My 5 year old daughter noticed throughout our stay that the man and woman were sneaking around hiding behind trees watching us. This made her very uneasy. This behavior is creepy and absolutely unacceptable. The bathrooms were dirty and offered only a bottle of lotion on the edge of the sink. No soap. The showers were also disgusting and only open from 7am to 9pm. Many people get up before 7 and like to shower. This is by far the worst camping experience that any of us have ever had. If you are looking for a fun, relaxing, enjoyable camping trip this is not the place for you. We camped here in a Tent.
We were in a group site and paid per person per night plus had canoe rentals. Great campground for a Scout group to be able to camp n canoe. Sites are nice, bathroom was great and clean. The system they have of bringing you up river and ending at the campground works great for our group. We had a lot of rain over night and the site drained nicely as if it had never rained which helps when you have 13 young men running around. Facilities and staff were wonderful, well worth the trip. We camped here in a Tent.
This is a very clean but basic campground, gives you a state park feel but with extras. Off season it was very quiet. We stayed in a group site and canoed all day Saturday. The campground has a small but well stocked store, game room, playground and friendly staff. We were transported up river with our canoes and paddled back to the campground, about 8 miles but there are various drop off spots depending how long you want to be on the water. Well worth the experience. We camped here in a Tent.
We visited this campground so that we could spend a day canoeing the Saco River. The sites were nicely wooded which afforded some welcomed privacy. The campground doesn't only allow pets, they truly welcome them and their owners. We rented our canoe from Woodland Acres and they transported us, the canoe and our dog upriver so that we could canoe back down, ending back at the campground. The Saco river is gorgeous with clear water and many sandy beaches on which to picnic or even camp. The campground has a nicely stocked store with average prices and friendly and knowledgeable staff. There are only a couple of caveats to this campground. One is that the swimming area is across the river, meaning you have to "ford" the river or walk out of the campground and over a bridge to get there. The second is that it tends to be a little noisy on Friday nights when large groups of people arrive to camp and then spend the next day canoeing. This was not a problem for us, as we thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment! Saturday night is quieter as most people had canoed all day with the accompanying beverages. We loved it here and will definitely be back. We camped here in a Fifth Wheel.
This is a CG with very large sites, nearly all shaded. This is a canoeing/kayaking campground, right on the Saco River. Everyone we met was into this river recreation. Seemed to be mainly young adults, with no small children in sight. Nice CG with somewhat limited facilities to entertain the kids, unless they are into kayaking. We camped here in a Motorhome.
