This is a National Park Service campground located on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Although there are not any hookups, the view of the ocean that some of the sites offer makes this a worthwhile stop. The sites are of medium size, but there is lots of space between sites. The campground offers a boardwalk with access to the beach. The weather was great, but watch out for mosquitoes. Unlike most NPS campgrounds this one offers a basic shower so you can clean up after spending the day in the ocean. The campground is about 20 minutes from the Cape Hatteras lighthouse. Reservations are not available, and weren't necessary as the campground was only 1/3 full. Be sure to check out the local fish markets for fresh local fish and take in a national park program. Worst restrooms I have ever used in my life. Absolutely filthy. Stayed that way the 3 days I was there. Cleaning consisted of putting new T.P. on top of the dispenser. Gentleman behind the counter acted as if he really did not want to be there. We camped here in a Tent.
If you like a sunset view on the soundside of Hatteras Island, this is the place. There are full service sites that are truly soundfront - step out into the water if you want. We were there in the spring, so the bugs were not bad, but like anyplace at ground level (except the beach!) in Hatteras, bugs are bad! There was a bad storm with NW winds while we were there, and most of the site flooded, but the staff was very helpful finding a place for us on higher ground. Rest rooms and laundry room were older, but clean a well kept. The pool looking great, but it wasn't warm enough to try it. There are no ground fires permitted, but I think that is county law, as none of the campgrounds we saw permit fires. Beach access is handy, but you have to drive there - 4x4 is the best way to go .... We camped here in a Travel Trailer.
Stayed here for a good part of a summer. Very friendly staff. Lots of traffic though. Fireworks were annoying. Now that fireworks are no longer allowed we will be back again. We camped here in a Motorhome.
This campground was adequate for seeing the outer banks, but I liked a campground further north better. This is on the sound side with no beach access. The staff is friendly and helpful but the wifi does not work anywhere but near the office. The sites are level but just a grass field with utilities scattered around. It is cheaper than most on the island but $44 seemed high for what they had to offer. We might stay here again if other campgrounds were not available. We camped here in a Motorhome.
From the moment we pulled in we were treated wonderfully! Extra nice camp store. The campground is very well kept. Our site was very nice. We stayed during the week and after labor day so the campground had low volume, making it extra nice for us. Every morning we had our coffee looking out at on the sound. We highly recommend this campground. We camped here in a Travel Trailer.
This campground is located right on the Pamlico Sound and just a few blocks from the ocean. The views were gorgeous, and watching the sun go down over the sound every evening was priceless. The kids enjoyed crabbing and fishing as well as trips to the beach. The pool is beautiful and well-kept. The camp store is large and has everything you could need. The staff is friendly and helpful. The sites are level but narrow and small. No campfires are permitted. The bathhouses are small and not as clean as I would like, but we tend to use the bathroom in our camper most of the time, even for showers. Overall we really enjoyed our stay and would definitely return again. We camped here in a Travel Trailer.
I was disappointed when we arrived at Frisco Woods. The site that we had booked for almost 6 months, was not at all what we had hoped for -- it was small and dumpy. So, the management was very friendly and let us move to a very nice, shady site but it wasn't a full hook up site. I felt that there wasn't much to do in the Frisco area and the few nearby restaurants were very pricey and not that good. But, the absolute worst part of the vacation were the mosquitoes. I've never experienced anything like it in my life. We were getting eaten alive cooking breakfast in the morning. We didn't even sit out at night because it was literally unbearable. I've been to plenty of campgrounds in the summer by the beach and have never had it this bad. The mosquitoes alone would keep us from ever returning. We didn't find the mosquitoes to be a problem in other areas of town -- just at the campground. Drove almost 15 hours and was disappointed. We camped here in a Travel Trailer.
This could be a great park if sanitary and clean conditions were maintained. The restrooms by the pool were filthy all weekend especially the men's room. No toilet paper, and feces and fecal stained clothing on the floor. The pool was cloudy. There was litter on the ground everywhere, especially on the beach by the sound. The management did not enforce "quiet hours" and the music and partying went on till after midnight. No use in complaining, we were told that we were free to leave but would get no refund. We wound up using the porta-potty in our pop up and traveling to the public beach to shower. It is a shame because this park could be great with the proximity to historic sites and the beautiful view of the sound. We camped here in a Tent Trailer.
