Beautiful park on a ridge in rolling "Driftless" area of s.w. Wisconsin. The campground has large sites, but many are not level enough for large rigs - a few are, and the reservation website includes site size info. Most sites have some shade from large trees. Site pads gravel, some partly overgrown with grass; grassy areas are kept mowed. Mosquito's are less bothersome than in many other campgrounds in the region as the park maintains several bat houses in the campground. New shower house has individual shower rooms - very nice for a state park!! The lake in the park is maintained for fishing, but offers boating (rentals available) & swimming too. There's a small cafe in the park run by the local dairy council, serving burgers, homemade fries, hot dogs, and other such things - and ice cream, of course! This is one of the few state park campgrounds we have been to that emphasizes and really enforces quiet hours, which we really enjoyed. Major drawback to this campground is the small number of sites suitable for large RVs, and how difficult it can be to find (GPS recommended!), as it's really out in the boonies. Incidentally, for tenter's, this is a fantastic park, with many extremely private sites. We camped here in a Travel Trailer.
A very beautiful park, lots of privacy at the campsites. There is a new bathroom with huge individual rooms for showers (it's nice to shower without being by someone using the potty). The bats were great, they even came out in the rain. Despite them, however, there were lots of flies and mosquitoes, most likely due to the heavy flash flood rain we were having. It's definitely out in the boonies-don't forget anything! We camped here in a Tent Trailer.
Beautiful Wisconsin State park. The sites are very private but not very level. The beach and lake area is very nice but it is a long walk from the campground downhill. It is a very hilly area. We really enjoyed this park and will return soon. We camped here in a Motorhome.
We came for the bats and were not disappointed! This park is home to hundreds of mosquito eating bats - as a result, we could camp without bug spray! Every evening at dusk, they fly around chomping unwary bugs but never bothering the campers. Interpretative programs about bats happen on weekends. Nice swimming beach down the hill from the campground. Campground divided into two parts: small loop of sites 1-36, large loop for the others. The small loop had many Class A friendly sites that had ample room. Sites 37-128 generally didn't seem as level; we liked the smaller loop better. Vegitation separates the camp sites so you don't feel packed in. Many activities - but you'll need a vehicle to enjoy them (ie, a Motorhome without a Toad is limiting). Friendly rangers, good cell phone and Blackberry coverage. The one problem: This park is in the middle of nowhere! Better be comfortable driving on narrow paved county two-lane hilly and curvy roads to get here! Good day trips include House on the Rock (gotta see it to believe it), Pendarvis historical site, a cave tour, and a mine tour. Very nice playground for the kids. We camped here in a Motorhome.
This is a beautiful, well cared for campground. The sites are very large, usually grassy with tall trees for privacy and shade. Many can accommodate a travel trailer. There were no mosquitoes when we visited. There are bat houses thru out the park. The bats eat the mosquitoes. There is a new bathhouse. The park has a lake with boats to rent and a beach. This is a lesser known state park in Wisconsin but is really a find. We camped here in a Tent Trailer.
