First of all we were actually greeted by the host couple on duty and taken to our site. To have a host act like one (and another also offered any help we might need) was a treat. The second treat was the park itself. The site we were on was a pull through, spacious, included picnic table, grill, grill table and fire ring. We were right along the river and it was quiet, peaceful and lovely. We gave the park a nine only because there was no sewer hook up. The trails at the park provided some good exercise as you'd go up and down and around the wooded forest. We would certainly return here for a longer stay. We were only overnighters. We camped at Service Park Campground COE in a Travel Trailer.

There is only a dollar store near by so bring all necessities with you for your stay. The closest market I believe they said was about 23 miles away.

COE knows how to build dams/locks and RV campgrounds next to their manmade lakes. Roads: paved and easy access, sites all have 50/30/20 power and water, dump station on the way out. All sites have fire ring, lantern hook, picnic table, large gravel patio area, are spotless and are pretty level. Bathrooms were spotless as were the showers which had good pressure and plenty of hot water and were heated. 1 washer and dryer available in bath house. Verizon Phone and Mifi worked great. No wifi in the CG. Hosts were plentiful, friendly, and helpful. They have a 3 mile hiking trail (they call it 4 mile) and boat ramp. Tow boats go by most every day but are not a real noise issue. Boat ramp for fishing and power boats in CG. Note there is a low head dam about 1 mile down river from this boat ramp that will kill you if you go over it. The only down side was the abundance of poison ivy in the CG and surrounding woods. We were there during the spring and the frogs and gators provided a cacophony of tweets, croaks, grunts, peeps, and roars. We'd definitely stay here again if we're in the area. We camped at Service Park Campground COE in a Motorhome.

Paddling in the Choctaw Wildlife area. Put in at Bobby's Fish camp $3. Bobby's is three miles down the road. It's world renowned fried cat fish Thurs-Sat 3-9, Sun 3-6. Local shopping is limited to a Dollar store and gas station convenient store in Coffeeville.

Overall Rating:

This small and cozy COE park is one of their best. Grounds are well cared for. The camp hosts and volunteers work hard to make your stay memorable and keep the place looking great. We stayed on site 14 which in our opinion is one of the nicest. All the sites are large and well spaced. The primary source of entertainment is the river barges. They are close and they run every day except Saturday. Hiking trails are not long but are easy and in good condition. The AT&T phone signal was weak at best but was serviceable. OTA television consisted of 4 very weak stations that were not worth the time to view so bring your satellite dish or DvD's if you want television. Bring your groceries as the only shopping is a well supplied General Dollar store. No fresh produce or meat but they have everything else. Great campground we will be back. Tips for other Campers:

Watch the barges, hike the trails visit the wildlife refuge. If you fish they have a great boat launch. River bank fishing is limited access due to height of the riverbank. Photography is good. Barge photo opportunities are excellent, wildlife opportunities are good for bird and some mammals.

What a great campground. Great way to start our return trip from Florida. Up to and beyond the typical COE standards. Large sites with enough room between them, and all have a view of the Tombigbee Waterway to watch the barges travel back and forth. Many of the sites along the waterway are pull through. Both Verizon & ATT reception was good. Campground hosts were above and beyond nice. A few weeks after we arrived home, we received a letter from the hosts and a dollar bill, stating that we over paid our fee by one dollar and they are returning it. Nice or what! Great place to get away, very quiet at night. Sites are spread far enough apart that you are not hearing your neighbor's conversations and you don't feel squeezed in. Hiking trails, small playground and boat launch are available as well as a bathhouse/restroom. Bathhouse was clean, a little dated but everything worked. We were right on the river, enjoyed watching the river traffic, 1 mile away from the dam & locks. There is a rail fence separating the campsites from the river, kind of a safety barrier. Couldn't pick up any antenna tv channels so need satellite dish or some movies, if you need entertainment. Not much around as far as stores so bring what you need. Several good sites next to the river and across the road is more wooded/shaded. If it had sewer hook-up, it would been even better. Dump station available on the way out. Good campground, we will be back. We camped at Service Park Campground COE in a Travel Trailer.

We had a back in site that was over 90 feet long, concrete and very easy to back into. Had so much shade I had to get out my 100 foot satellite to get a signal but I did. Water pressure was good and so was voltage. If this park had sewer hookups it would be a 10. Only drawback is that the town of Coffeeville has nothing, just an Exxon station that had a horrible parking lot in the back where you had to go for diesel. It is 15 miles or more to any town that has anything. Park is half a mile off US84. We were only there for one night but would stay again if back through the area. Stayed for two days in 27 foot motorhome with tow vehicle. Beautiful COE park on the Tombigbee River. Two types of sites -- huge paved pull throughs that are parallel to the river edge and spacious back in sites on the other side of the road. All have some shade and some are completely in the shade. Any place else the back in sites would get a 10. Here you want to be on the river if you can so you can watch the occasional barge traffic go by and watch the birds along the river. Best sites are 11-14. Sites can hold big rigs but warning -- the turn around spot at the end is VERY small. I pulled out and got turned around and came back and hitched up my tow vehicle and my MH is only 27 feet long. Lots of folk also had boats as the park also has a boat launch on the river. Hiking trails were in reasonable length loops and made nice dog walking. There are no sewer hookups which was fine by me. Big dump station with potable water on way out. This is truly a hidden gem. It is locate about 4 miles outside Coffeeville, Alabama on the banks of the Tombigbee Water Way. The interior roads and parking pads are paved. All sites are very spacious, shaded and the pull troughs are right next to the river. Barge traffic is a routine sight in this super quiet and peaceful park. The river is the only entertainment here. Fish or just sit back and enjoy it's peaceful movement. Each site has a large gravel patio with fire ring, table and grill. The bathhouse is some what dated but clean and secure. My only regret was we could only spend 3 nights before we had to move on. We are already trying to plan another visit but it will be longer than 3 nights for sure. Adding sewer connection to the sites would make this place a 10 in my book. We camped at Service Park Campground COE in a Travel Trailer.

Beautiful very clean park on the Tombigbee River. We stayed on our way out to Texas and like it so much we stayed again on our way home. The best sites are probably 11 and 12, pull thrus with a great view of the river. We didn't use restrooms or showers but I checked, they were very clean. there was a washer and dryer in the bathhouse, $1 per load. If sites had sewer hookups, this park would be a 10, but the dump site is conveniently placed on the way out, so not really a big deal. Park hosts were very friendly and helpful. Not much in the way of shopping close by, so stock up before you get there. Nice boat ramp. We camped at Service Park Campground COE in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

This is Alabama, with a lot of logging trucks on the road, so be careful pulling out onto the highway when leaving. Logging trucks operate at one speed....all out...and they don't seem to be acquainted with the brake pedal!

Small CoE park right on the Tombigbee River. View of the river and tows was excellent. The park has few campsites but very good spacing and views. Site was a pull through on the water. At 35 feet plus toad, i was able to unhook on the site. The turnaround at the end of the park was tight, so I turned the RV around before hooking up the toad. As mentioned elsewhere, the log trucks make a left hand exit from the park an adventure. ATT cell service was intermittent but Verizon worked very well. Amazingly spacious waterfront pull through campsites make this a special campground. Back in sites were also spacious, but built up and had steep sides. All sites paved or concrete. A single two lane road goes through the campground, with a cul-de-sac for turnaround. Yes, the barges and boats are fun to watch. A wooden dual rail fence separates the sites from an 80% grade drop into the river... not the place for young children. If you have young kids, I'd camp in the back in sites, not on the waterfront. Besides, there is a playground between next to bathhouse away from the river. Water snakes were observed in the river several times. Hookups worked great. Bathrooms/showers are dated, and could have been cleaned better. Toilet rims dirty. Yuk. Well maintained dump station. Nice laundry room and small book exchange. Sprint voice service was 1 or 2 bar. Sporadic data service. DTV was limited to six channels of PBS and ABC. Hosts were friendly and engaged. Unlike some COE parks which seem dominated by campers on a mission to fish, this park also had vacationers who were there to get away from it all, and even x-country bicyclists. People were quite social. This park will flood, so your vacation plans could get disrupted. There is a grocery store in Coffeeville 4 miles east, but otherwise this part of Alabama is quite rural and isolated. If you get hurt, it's a long way to a hospital. Little to do in area. Coffeeville dam not open to public via land. Gates to the campground are locked after 10 pm. Log truck traffic on US 84 is heavy, and can be heard in the distance from the campground. We would camp here again as a get away for a few days. We camped at Service Park Campground COE in a Travel Trailer.

Fine location on the Tombigbee River for observing large pleasure boats heading south for the winter; along with many barges carrying cargo north or south.

Our site (one of ten pull throughs, along with three back ins overlooking the river) was on a high bank, affording an excellent view of river traffic.

This is another fine COE campground, providing ideal scenery.

Over the air TV is weak at best, so bring other options to watch TV. However, the scenery and interesting boat traffic is much better.

We look forward to another visit. We camped at Service Park Campground COE in a Travel Trailer.

This Corps of Engineering park is great. Camping sites are directly on the river so we were able to sit at our campsite and watch the barges and boat traffic. A boat launch area is onsite and a fishing area is available. Park attendants were very friendly and helpful. The only problem with the park, like most all COE campgrounds, sites are electric and water only with no sewer hookup, although the dump station is close and very accessible. What a lovely campground. It was quiet and we enjoyed being right on the river. They have wonderful paved pull throughs that were perfect for our 40' motorhome with toad. Our site was level, grassy and shady. There was a cement toped picnic table and fire ring with firewood stacked up for us to use at no extra cost! We did not use the restrooms so I can't comment on those. Camp host was quite helpful and allowed me to switch campsites to take advantage of the pull through. We would definitely camp there again.
