8 Parks near Elkmont, Alabama
Aug 2013 - $19.00
This is our 2nd time here and it is very quiet. Have to drive 7-1/2 miles west and north through Elkmont, but if you want quiet, this is the place. Owners very nice. The reason I rated it 7 was because of the distance from I-65. - ob's place
Apr 2013 - $16.00
Nice long and spacious sites with good electricity and water pressure. Parks Wi-Fi fair. No television reception or AT&T phone cell service. Verizon cell phone service spotty. Quiet country setting good for night or two. Owners on premise and very helpful. Located right on nice walking/bike trail. We would return at Passport America rate. - PappaDee
Jul 2012 - $17.00
Rate reflects Passport America discount. The park is located in a quaint, rural community with a wonderful biking trail adjacent to the park. This is a rather farm style setting which can be appealing but there aren't a lot of amenities. The sites are long and wide; however, there is a slight slope to the front of our site. The hookups were excellent. Wi-Fi is OK. There are several trees in the park, but none tall enough yet to produce significant shade. There are 5-6 long term residents, but their sites are very clean. There is a little creek on the property which would provide some entertainment, but it is low at this time due to a drought. Although this isn't a destination spot, we would stay again. For local RVers, it could provide a nice, quiet weekend in a rural setting. - User2396
Jul 2016 - $30.00
A great place for an overnight stop on the way to Florida. No amenities like a pool, but the sites are all pull throughs so we didn't have to unhook. The sites are stone, and generally level. We would stay again if passing through. - mcjohnson74
Jul 2016 - $30.00
Simple and easy. Great stop if you are self contained. Highly recommended. - Dennis_K
Jun 2016 - $30.00
This is a nice, convenient park on the west side of Interstate 65. It is very quiet even though you are able to see the Interstate if you park down past the office. There are some sites beside the office that are level and longer, but you will hear the highway. The roads and sites are all gravel. The power is very good as is the free WiFi. One caution is the 70# water pressure, so a regulator is needed unless you have a newer rig. It appears the park only serves self-contained rigs. The park is lightly used, so getting a space is almost assured. This is more a stop-over campground or a place to stay while visiting Huntsville, AL, 29 miles to the north. The park has one price; $30/night, cash or check.
We would stay here again. - Workamper04
Jul 2016 - $78.00
This campground is a little more expensive than most in the area but it is the perfect example of what camping is all about. Almost all of the sites are on the lake or within a few steps of the lake. It is clean, quiet and, best of all, the sites are very large and shady. Our site was a back-in with a multi-level patio that stepped right down to the water. It was a great spot for fishing right from the patio. The campground only has a few sites with sewer hookups because of TVA environmental restrictions by the lake. They do have an easy to access dump station. The restrooms were clean and easy to use. The boat ramp was large enough for most small craft fishing boats. There is no pool but the beach was clean and a good place to swim. The park is well laid out with many large shade trees. There is no cable or Wi-Fi at each site. With the beautiful lake, the fishing, and the abundant wildlife that rambles through the park we didn't miss the TV or Wi-Fi at all. If you're looking to spend a few days at a clean quiet campsite on a lake I highly recommend this KOA. - Freelander1
Apr 2016 - $29.00
Overall it was a nice stay. My family usually go down to Joe Wheeler a few times a year just for weekend get away's. Park was same as usually nice roads and fairly level sites. Only problem we had this time was site C-17, it has a tree that is really close to the pad and it prevents you from having your awning out and with a camper 32ft or longer you can't get backed up far enough to prevent this. I voiced my displeasure with having to move to one of the camp host and to the front desk so maybe they can take this tree down so this site can be used by all campers. I am aware that the state is under a money crunch in the state park area but there are things that need to be updated. Such as electrical supplies. The one on the site that we moved to was just worn badly and caused a loose connection on my power supply that caused it to overheat the plug, sewage drains need to be updated or at least cleaned out around them so it wouldn't be so hard to get connected. I know this seems like a bad review but its really not. All in all it was a good trip as usually but could be improved. - ctcbama
Feb 2016 - $25.00
Approx 115 sites, most of them full hook up. A few sites are short, but most will accommodate larger rigs. The sites are fairly level, some with an overall slight slope front to back. There are only 4-5 sites on the C loop close to the water (150 ft.), the rest in the woods. Some on the B loop are on a ridge and have a very nice view of the river through the pines. Most of the campground is wooded with tall pines and a few hardwoods. Satellite reception is spotty because of the fairly heavy canopy. All utilities worked well and the roads are good. Good spacing between sites, but not quite as wide as a typical COE park. Most sites are 30 amp, there are a handfull of 50 amp sites on the A loop. Reservations for this CG are non-site specific at this time, however, there are plans to publish site lengths and pictures of each site on the website, and also allow site specific reservations by the summer of 2016. Bathrooms were clean and heated. There is excellent free WiFi in the park - coverage was complete, however, for some reason I was not able to connect to it. Verizon coverage here is 2/5. The kid's playground is physically separated from the camping area - something I think folks with younger kids would not be comfortable with. Joe Wheeler park is a large venue with a hotel, cabins, golf course, restaurant, swimming area, boating and an extensive day use area (basketball court, volley ball, etc). The day use area is separated from the main camping area. Many trails in the park. - Bama Camper
Aug 2015 - $28.00
Asphalt roads and site pads are in good shape. Mostly shady. Large fishing lake, good swimming area, restaurant in lodge. Water, sewer, and electric are in great shape. No cable service and Wifi is very iffy. The golf course is wonderful, played 18 holes for &25 with cart (price if yous stay there, normally $35. Sites are level and neat. There is a concrete table and fire pit at each site. I will go back to this campground. - Alabama Jim
May 2016 - $29.00
Nice club house with TV and pool table. All night access and full kitchen. Friendly and laid back service, drop box payment after hours. Pull thru sites with small concrete pad. Sites were well spaces but a bit odd layout. Right off busy road but the noise was not disruptive. Good for a peaceful nights rest. Very easy to get to off Route 65. - Jeannie and Eddy
Jul 2015 - $23.00
Several full hook up sites with 50amp, water, sewer located on front side of park. Mobile homes are on back side. Quiet and level sites. Some have better concrete pads than others. Good laundry room. Very large underground storm shelter is on site. Good Verizon/ATT cell service. Clear line of sight for Sat TV and local channels are clear. Not much around the park, but easy drive to Athens or Decatur. Price based on weekly basis. - Gpndavid
Mar 2015 - $30.00
We arrived after 11:00 pm looking for a place to stay for the night. The park is simple to find off the highway (I-65), their signage is very good. There was a well lit check-in spot explaining the costs, late check-in process and what spots are available for overnight. Payment is honor system after hours, placing payment in a locked box at their office. They have a nice map of the park but the numbers weren't all there so we weren't sure where some of the spots were, and being so late we wanted to be as less disruptive to the other campers as possible. We ended up in the open end spot, which was tough to get into with a 36' motorhome towing a car, but we managed. There was a concrete pad that was quite level. Sewer and water were on the correct side, power was on the other side but reachable with our standard cord.
Being that we were on the end spot as you enter the park we heard every car that came into the mobile home park (it's all one huge property) which was surprisingly consistent all night long. The park is also right on US-31 which is also very busy.
The after hours check-in sheets gave the codes for laundry and showers, but we did not look at either so I cannot comment. The overall property appeared clean and well kept so I'd assume they are nice and clean as well.
This park met our needs perfectly. We arrived very late, had full hookups on a level pad, and left early. We would use them again for a stopover if needed, but not somewhere we'd stay for an extended time. - OnDaRox
Jun 2016 - $20.00
Easy to get into, with 230+ sites you would think they would fix the bathrooms floors--mold ,old cracks, and very dirty appearance. Bugs, roaches, flying insects all in this area. You will encounter one if not all when you try to shower, or relieve yourself. Must wear shoes to shower. - Chicabunny
Apr 2016 - $20.00
We were very impressed about this park. A security gate near our site made it a challenge to back a 60' combination truck & trailer into, but we did it. The sites are nicely spaced and the date we arrived competitors for a Bassmasters Elite bass tournament were also arriving and there was a lot of traffic. There was no excess noise. The city of Decatur knows how to manage a city park and campground. - George316
Apr 2016 - $21.00
Big rig friendly with level sites. The GPS directed us thru the city streets instead of just down Point Mallard Street; therefore, my suggestion is to ask for directions when you make the reservation. Showers had low water pressure. Laundry was good. Campground was great for riding bicycle. No dog park but lots of fields to walk dog. Dirty gravel road and could not wash vehicle. Due to the season the water park was closed. - Fulltimersrv
Dec 2012 - $15.00
Nice park, nice owners, propane on site. Sites are spacious. Slow WiFi, and on weekends it get loud because of the tavern across the street from the campground. Not the owners fault. - bailmanFTRV
Jun 2012 - $20.00
Sites were gravel and mostly flat. Most of those there were seasonal it seemed. This campground is 22 miles from I-65 which we did not expect. And of course 22 miles back to the interstate. You have to use the Highway 64 address for your GPS. Minimal shade. We would not stay here again as it is too far off our I-65 route. - Sunne
May 2012 - $14.00
Passport rate for one night in a travel trailer. Would stay again, pull throughs, quiet, hookups readily available. I did have trouble finding it, my GPS didn't cooperate, so I called for directions. I left this review as it's been awhile since someone left one. - knhllh
Jul 2016 - $18.00
Great Park! We stayed here 1 night coming home from Florida. We hated the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, but love the campground.
This park is small, but nice. Sites were well spaced. They are very clean.
There was no online reservations available. This is old school. You have to call and check availability. I didn't get to pick out my spot. You have to trust the person working the office.
Would be great if you are looking to things in Huntsville. Would stay here again! - kmeece
Jun 2016 - $20.00
This is a very nice little campground on the property of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. There is only one bath house on the grounds and 27 spaces (although there is talk that they may expand it). All sites have full hook-ups, but are very tight to get into, which is why I only gave it a 9 rating. The park is clean and the people are very friendly. I would recommend this park to anyone (just make sure you have a reservation). This was my 2nd time staying there (my first was in May). - benatk
Nov 2015 - $20.00
As other reviews have stated, it is an older park that is badly in need of updating. Location is great, sites are level, 30amp, water and sewer, but has a majority of semi-permanents, host on duty Monday-Friday 9-5 otherwise note on door of the few sites available on weekends. Saw security vehicles several times patrolling the main interior road. It is definitely an overnight but not a destination campground. - RJourney
