Overall Rating:

On the weekends, you will not get a discount. During the week we got a 5% for over 62. $88.+ dollars is too much for a 2 night stay, was surprised with the cost for a state park, many added on costs. We stayed 3 nights and the pull thru was so (36) un-level, we had to move after one night. Also little water was at the hydrant. Next spot was great. We left to have some service work done on the RV at Tiffin and returned for 2 more nights, that is when we found out no discount for weekends. The camping spots are huge, wooded and very nice. water pressure is low, not sure why. Bath houses were a walk from every site, but I like that as you had no noise from the bathrooms at your site. If the total price was 35.00 a night I would return. There is a swim pool some where in the area, and a day area you have access to but we didn't use them. The camp ground entrance is gated. There is no size restriction on dogs and there were a lot of huge dogs, 2 were roaming freely. No restrictions on lights and there were a few campers and tents with Las Vegas lighting going on. I saw deer, squirrels and 1 scorpion while we were there, a nice 8 year old that asked if we needed help setting up when we arrived. As others have written, don't go by GPS, instead go to the park's web site and look at their written directions for arriving and departing. WiFi is from the bath house so park close to it if you need it. Most of the pull thoughts were on level. Ask for 62+ discount when you check in even if you have booked on line. We camped at DeSoto State Park in a Motorhome.

A little bit hard to find. Be careful and follow signs. When leaving, go back the way you came in from Ft Payne, otherwise you will be on narrow country lanes for a while. We camped at DeSoto State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

Our first experience in an Alabama State Park was a good one. Check in is at the campground store and took less than five minutes and we were off to the campground! The campground has a coded security gate and an Upper and Lower loop for back in sites. There is a large section in the middle for pull throughs. All the back in sites are angled as such that you feel like you have some privacy and are plenty long. We walked the campground several times and it looked like all the sites were pretty level(crushed gravel). The bath houses(clean and updated) are in the upper and lower sections and that is where the WiFi's signal is the best. The cable TV has about 30 channels and worked well for us. Dumpsters are located at the entrance/exit area. At the campground store they have some souvenirs and limited camping supplies. They have firewood for purchase for $5 a bundle. The wood was pretty green, making it hard to keep a fire going. There are several hiking trails within the park, some close to 2 miles in length with several waterfalls with varying degrees of difficulty. There is a lodge with a restaurant and several cabins. There's a playground/picnic area and a pool nearby but not in the campground itself. Overall this is one of the best parks we've been to! We camped at DeSoto State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Being that the campground is on top of Lookout Mountain, it takes about 20 minutes to get into downtown Fort Payne. There is a Walmart, Cracker Barrel, Chick Fil A, Lowes and such near the I-59 exchange. There is a local restaurant, the Bar B-Q Place that served a great Brisket plate! As others have said, come in to the park from Fort Payne(I-59 exit). Little River Canyon has a nice scenic drive and Desoto Falls is only a few miles outside the park and are both well worth it!

What a beautiful park on top of a mountain in rural NE Alabama! The spaces are roomy and it is woodsy and clean. It is easy to make a reservation on their website. We had to reserve and cancel three times due to some well issues at our home, but there was no problem, they email you back with a confirmation of the cancellation. They do require 72 hours notice. The park is laid out well. There are a couple of spots (hard to get) that are on a rock ledge overlooking the valley. The sites are roomy, level with gravel, all have a fire pit and picnic table. We were in #30 and it was full hookup with cable! We were pleasantly surprised! The cell service is even pretty good. I'm on their WiFi now typing this review. There are some pull through. We no longer toad, our rig is 24 feet and we had LOTS of room. There were some big rigs throughout. There are walking trails and great facilities, but it is rustic and not "cheesy" like some parks....right up our alley. There is also a lodge and restaurant within the park, cabins too. The only drawback when we arrived was that one of our neighbors assumed we all wanted to hear he and his friends play electric guitar and sing (country), but they weren't obnoxious and the ate dinner and stopped. They actually weren't half bad! Being on top of a mountain, in the woods, I thought it was kind of fun, my husband not so much, LOL. Weekends are always booked, as summer approaches they will fill up fast, reserve early if you can. We will return for sure. We camped at DeSoto State Park in a Motorhome.

We enjoyed our stay at Desoto State Park immensely. The sites were wide, level and made of concrete. The wifi in the park was outstanding, I was able to stream college football with absolutely no problems. The hiking trails are very nice and my sons really enjoyed the rock formation and the waterfalls. Checking into the park was a breeze with a very helpful staff. We will definitely return to Desoto State Park as it has become my 7 year olds favorite place to camp. We camped at DeSoto State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Excellent park that appears to have been recently remodeled. Excellent interior roads to and through gated campground. Two back-in areas and one pullthru area. Back-in sites have gravel pads. All sites are spacious and plenty long. For the pullthru sites we recommend most any on the outside of the loop for patio privacy. Might want to avoid the bottom of the hill. Deer are all over the place. We camped at DeSoto State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

If you are in a big rig do NOT come in from Mentone and then south on 89; come in from Fort Payne. Walmart in Fort Payne. Eat in Mentone at WildFlower Café and the Plow Share Bistro. Fantastic. Visit Desoto Falls, kayak upriver. Hike in the park unless you just had rain. Visit, view, hike in the Little River Canyon National Preserve. Mentone Color Festival is 4th weekend in October and was fun. Visit the CCC museum at the far park entrance.

Many pads have enough slope that jacking RV wheels off the ground is necessary to level. On Site 25 we were fully jacked up on the front and still not level. The staff allowed us to move the next day. On site 27 we were still wheels up but level. Some sites like 2, 29, and 51 would be almost level to begin with. A dozen or so other sites would be nearly level or easy to set up on with motorhomes. If this is critical, the staff would be able to suggest best available sites. Also if you want easy walking access to bathhouses without walking through other camp sites, select a site on the same side of the road as the bathhouse. While here through the week (quite / few campers) we saw lots of deer feeding mornings and evenings. There is some beautiful scenery including waterfalls to see in the area. We camped at DeSoto State Park in a Motorhome.

Spent 6 nights and enjoyed every day. Excellent hiking trails! Very quiet and well kept park. Would have given a 10 except for the unlevel sites. The back in sites seemed to be more level than the pull throughs, but we made it work. Easy drive to Fort Payne for groceries, etc. We'd go back! We camped at DeSoto State Park in a Motorhome.

We stayed at this park, back in May of 2016. It's a nice campground. Most of the sites looks fairly level and most were very large. Full hook-ups, which is wonderful. Some sites have decent shade. There is a pool that you can use, but you have to drive to it (it's in the park, just not walkable...probably a 3 minute drive from your site). The water in the pool was very chilly when we went, but our kids still enjoyed it. If I remember correctly, there is a small fee to use the pool (you pay at the pool), but we went during the last hour of the day (5p-6p possibly) when it was free. Unfortunately the falls were not running during our visit (the park Rangers told us that November-March is a better time to visit when viewing the falls), but it was still very pretty. It was a nice park and we'll definitely be back. The only thing to note, is that the road up to the sites (after you've checked in at the Ranger's station), is not a long road at all however....it is windy and has some narrow spots so drive carefully up/down. We camped at DeSoto State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This is not a park to stay at if you don't have a tow vehicle. The park is all gravel with trees behind on the outer sites. The roads are steep so no biking. The office and trails are more than a mile from the sites. Phone service and Verizon internet is poor. For people who have never seen the woods this may be a great place. I have better in my backyard. Sadly at this time the Falls in Alabama are dried up so we couldn't view those. I thought this was a very overpriced park for what it is. It would be better to park and hike through rather than pay for one of these sites overnight. We camped at DeSoto State Park in a Motorhome.

It was a very nice park with long sites and good distances between your neighbors. This was so nice as to have been compared to some of the places we have stayed at a much higher rates and hardly any spaces to move. Alabama does have some of the nicest parks and we have enjoyed them. Sites are not all leveled, but not bad compared to some of the places we have stayed. This was not that difficult to fix. Remember the world is not flat, and yes this park has lots of rocks, canyon and in the hills and is by far not flat. Remember we are CAMPING. Thanks appreciated our stay and will probably be back. We camped at DeSoto State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Made reservations months in advance for the Labor day holiday. Glad we did. The park was full. Camped in a Class C with tow vehicle at the pull through site 48. Site is asphalt-and required quite a bit of leveling on our spot. Sites are very long and great spacing in between your neighbor. Some of the pull thru-sites have a little bit of shade. Dad had site 49 and it was a little bit better at leveling. Fire pit/grill. The back in sites are fine gravel and looked to be a lot easier to level. Very clean and quiet park. Wish TN would take a look at updating their state parks like this.Had full-hookup W/E/S. Wi-fi reception was over at the bathhouse. The bath house was very nice and clean for a state park. Definitely bring enough supplies for your stay. Have to drive back down main road to get to the park store for any essentials. Good cable TV-lots of hiking trails. Alabama's best kept secret! Will definitely be back! Would rate this park a 10 except for the leveling issues and wi-fi. Picnic tables are wood/warped also. Beautiful campground! $40/per night reflects all the fees/taxes. No trash cans at sites-have to haul trash to main dumpster. We camped at DeSoto State Park in a Motorhome.

Very nice, clean, large campground with mostly partial shaded sites with gravel pads; although some sites are asphalt. There is a pull thru section but sites are closer together and more open. The modern clean bathhouses are in the center of the loops with dirt paths leading from the campsites. My only complaint was there was no paved pathways and it is hard to navigate the long dirt, tree rooted path in the dark. To drive to bathhouse you have to go behind the RV dump. I agree rate is on high side as you have to add a 3% resort fee + $4 convenience fee to reservation. Azalea Boardwalk is worth taking. Desoto Falls & Howard's Chapel are worth visiting, both outside the park boundary. We camped at DeSoto State Park in a Motorhome.
