Many pads have enough slope that jacking RV wheels off the ground is necessary to level. On Site 25 we were fully jacked up on the front and still not level. The staff allowed us to move the next day. On site 27 we were still wheels up but level. Some sites like 2, 29, and 51 would be almost level to begin with. A dozen or so other sites would be nearly level or easy to set up on with motorhomes. If this is critical, the staff would be able to suggest best available sites. Also if you want easy walking access to bathhouses without walking through other camp sites, select a site on the same side of the road as the bathhouse. While here through the week (quite / few campers) we saw lots of deer feeding mornings and evenings. There is some beautiful scenery including waterfalls to see in the area. We camped at DeSoto Resort State Park in a Motorhome.

We stayed at this park, back in May of 2016. It's a nice campground. Most of the sites looks fairly level and most were very large. Full hook-ups, which is wonderful. Some sites have decent shade. There is a pool that you can use, but you have to drive to it (it's in the park, just not walkable...probably a 3 minute drive from your site). The water in the pool was very chilly when we went, but our kids still enjoyed it. If I remember correctly, there is a small fee to use the pool (you pay at the pool), but we went during the last hour of the day (5p-6p possibly) when it was free. Unfortunately the falls were not running during our visit (the park Rangers told us that November-March is a better time to visit when viewing the falls), but it was still very pretty. It was a nice park and we'll definitely be back. The only thing to note, is that the road up to the sites (after you've checked in at the Ranger's station), is not a long road at all however....it is windy and has some narrow spots so drive carefully up/down. We camped at DeSoto Resort State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Spent 6 nights and enjoyed every day. Excellent hiking trails! Very quiet and well kept park. Would have given a 10 except for the unlevel sites. The back in sites seemed to be more level than the pull throughs, but we made it work. Easy drive to Fort Payne for groceries, etc. We'd go back! We camped at DeSoto Resort State Park in a Motorhome.

Tip: make sure you take 35 from Fort Payne to 89. If you go through Menton, the roads are narrow and curvy if you have a big rig.

Very nice state park with well spaced, long and paved pads sites. Full hook-ups plus cable available. Have stayed here before and will come back anytime we are in the area. Wildlife frequent the campground when camper population is low. We camped at DeSoto Resort State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Fort Payne is the hometown of the "Alabama" country music group and has a fan club/museum to visit. Plenty of shopping and other activities in the area and town.

This is not a park to stay at if you don't have a tow vehicle. The park is all gravel with trees behind on the outer sites. The roads are steep so no biking. The office and trails are more than a mile from the sites. Phone service and Verizon internet is poor. For people who have never seen the woods this may be a great place. I have better in my backyard. Sadly at this time the Falls in Alabama are dried up so we couldn't view those. I thought this was a very overpriced park for what it is. It would be better to park and hike through rather than pay for one of these sites overnight. We camped at DeSoto Resort State Park in a Motorhome.

Made reservations months in advance for the Labor day holiday. Glad we did. The park was full. Camped in a Class C with tow vehicle at the pull through site 48. Site is asphalt-and required quite a bit of leveling on our spot. Sites are very long and great spacing in between your neighbor. Some of the pull thru-sites have a little bit of shade. Dad had site 49 and it was a little bit better at leveling. Fire pit/grill. The back in sites are fine gravel and looked to be a lot easier to level. Very clean and quiet park. Wish TN would take a look at updating their state parks like this.Had full-hookup W/E/S. Wi-fi reception was over at the bathhouse. The bath house was very nice and clean for a state park. Definitely bring enough supplies for your stay. Have to drive back down main road to get to the park store for any essentials. Good cable TV-lots of hiking trails. Alabama's best kept secret! Will definitely be back! Would rate this park a 10 except for the leveling issues and wi-fi. Picnic tables are wood/warped also. Beautiful campground! $40/per night reflects all the fees/taxes. No trash cans at sites-have to haul trash to main dumpster. We camped at DeSoto Resort State Park in a Motorhome.

It was a very nice park with long sites and good distances between your neighbors. This was so nice as to have been compared to some of the places we have stayed at a much higher rates and hardly any spaces to move. Alabama does have some of the nicest parks and we have enjoyed them. Sites are not all leveled, but not bad compared to some of the places we have stayed. This was not that difficult to fix. Remember the world is not flat, and yes this park has lots of rocks, canyon and in the hills and is by far not flat. Remember we are CAMPING. Thanks appreciated our stay and will probably be back. We camped at DeSoto Resort State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We still love this park but I feel it is getting over priced for the area. By the time you get all the fee's and taxes figured in your over $40 a night. The lodge still has good food but the Friday night seafood buffet is not a deal at about $20.00 . There should be more on it than shrimp and fish for that price.
On the bright side you can now reserve a specific site instead of first come first serve. The staff at the park have always been great and helpful. We camped at DeSoto Resort State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Very nice, clean, large campground with mostly partial shaded sites with gravel pads; although some sites are asphalt. There is a pull thru section but sites are closer together and more open. The modern clean bathhouses are in the center of the loops with dirt paths leading from the campsites. My only complaint was there was no paved pathways and it is hard to navigate the long dirt, tree rooted path in the dark. To drive to bathhouse you have to go behind the RV dump. I agree rate is on high side as you have to add a 3% resort fee + $4 convenience fee to reservation. Azalea Boardwalk is worth taking. Desoto Falls & Howard's Chapel are worth visiting, both outside the park boundary. We camped at DeSoto Resort State Park in a Motorhome.

Fort Payne has supplies, Walmart and other stores. Mentone is an artsy weekend village but most places are closed during the week. Little River Canyon & Desoto Falls are a must see.

The only thing to recommend would be the store carrying some essentials like milk, bread, etc. Other than that, this is by far the best park we have experienced in Alabama. The Wood Loop is more wooded and private and big rigs will also appreciate many pull-through sites. The highlight is the beautiful hiking trails all close to the campgrounds. Likewise, a short drive to beautiful overlooks and falls in the Little River Canyon. Helpful staff and beautiful woods. We camped at DeSoto Resort State Park in a Motorhome.

Very nice state park with WES, cable and wifi. We were close to the comfort station and was able to receive the wifi signal at our campsite. Our back in site was fairly level, some were not, and had a gravel pad. Shade trees at some sites. We would definitely stay here again if in the area. The nicest campground we have stayed in this past year. Very spacious sites, all paved, paved roads, full hookup ups. Very big rig friendly. Excellent staff, very friendly. A very peaceful place to rest and lot's of hiking trails. The restaurant at the lodge is pricey and the food was just fair at best. I wouldn't eat there again. This is a nice park with larges sites separated by trees and shrubs. There is a hiking trail between sites 71 -69 which leads to the Azalea Boardwalk trail. The red trail has interesting large boulders. The park offers activities at the Nature Center and campfire ring. The negatives are: 1) When you check in at the country store, you must walk across a road and parking lot and into the store to check in so it takes longer to check in 2) There is only one set of dumpsters for the whole campground and it is at the entrance 3) It is quite a distance to get to stores and restaurants in Fort Payne. I would say about 10 miles which includes driving down a mountain. 4) The office closes at 5 p.m. so if you arrive after that time you have to call security. 5) The State Park Lodge offers a seafood buffet on Friday nights for $18.95 and does not have enough variety to justify the price. 6) It does not offer Wi-Fi throughout the whole campground. 7) you cannot reserve a specific site. We camped at DeSoto Resort State Park in a Motorhome.
