Definitely follow the driving instructions listed on the website and do not let your GPS bring you to the park. Even so, the park is not exactly convenient to the Interstate; however, it is a better RV park than run-of-the-mill and that should weigh in your decision. As others have commented, full complement of hook-ups, 45 lbs. water pressure at site #52, could not get any Wi-Fi there and despite the asphalt parking pad, my automatic leveler lifted a side wheel slightly off the ground in order to achieve neutrality. Park is gated at night (with entrance key pad), with ample space between camp sites and plenty of trees. Drainage is excellent in the wet winter months. Try to arrive during daylight hours, as this park is in the boonies with narrow roads and no lighting until you actually arrive at the park. Diesel is available only 3 miles down the road. The restaurant has excellent fare, friendly service and reasonable prices. I enjoyed country fried chicken and my wife went for the 12 fried shrimp, all for $38.00. Salad bar was nice and fresh. All-in-all this is a peaceful, quiet and wooded campground with excellent facilities. We stayed one night while on the road to elsewhere. We camped at DeSoto State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

Outstanding RV park in a spectacular area. You just can't say enough on how well Alabama manages and develops their state parks. They are a model for the rest of the states. This park is simply great. I only have one gripe that kept us from rating it higher and that has to do with SOME of the site engineering and design. About 1/3 to 1/2 the sites do not have level sites. We were on a site we had thought was level based on web site pics only to find it was severely slopped. Obviously they had to fight topography in the design and development and the problem may not be as bad for trailers as for motor-homes. Trailers can tongue level but with our motorhome jacks we could not level. It was so bad we had to switch sites and we really strained out jack system to the point it would not retract from the boards underneath them. All that said it is a grand place with a wonderful staff and we will return! (just being careful of which site we choose) We camped at DeSoto State Park in a Motorhome.

Very nice park. We stayed three nights. The campground is well maintained. The wifi was very weak at our campsite. (It is broadcast from the bath houses). We hiked several trails while there and visited the CCC museum. We will be back. We camped at DeSoto State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed for two nights on our way down to Florida. A little out of our way, but worth it. This is a beautiful campground in a beautiful park. Our site, #55, is a pull-through and plenty big enough for any RV. It had a slight slope but was level side to side. FULL hookups, including cable TV. Nice separation between sites and trees with underbrush to provide privacy. VERY quiet here at night. The bathhouses are somewhat of a hike from the loops because there's no real walking paths to them. However, they're very clean and modern and also include laundry facilities. The camp store is OK; it has minimal provisions and is really just a souvenir shop with helpful Park Rangers. There's also a small nature center. We had a nice dinner at the lodge. There are plenty of hiking trails in the area and various points of interest. Next time we'll return for a week as this is truly a destination type campground, not just a great place to overnight. We camped at DeSoto State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Plenty of shopping available in Fort Payne. Don't rely on the camp store for any supplies as what they have is minimal, including firewood. Try to arrive prior to sunset as the last couple of miles are narrow, hilly, tight roadways.

Quiet little state park. We only stayed 1 night as we were trying to bypass Atlanta heading to Florida and coming from the Smokey Mountains TN. The sites had full hook up with cable TV. The sites were pull thru! Cell signal was good for both Verizon and ATT. The sites were spaced out enough with vegetation between sites to give you the privacy that we like. They were long enough that we did not need to disconnect. We will definitely stay here again when in the area. We camped at DeSoto State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This is the cleanest, most well-maintained State park we have ever stayed in. The lots are spacious and private. Staff was polite and very informative as to sightseeing, hiking, shopping and restaurant opportunities. We hiked Laurel Falls and Azalea Cascades trails. Even though there wasn't much water flow, the trails are shaded and very well marked. We are going to make sure we visit Desoto several times a year now that we have discovered this jewel! We camped at DeSoto State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Make sure to visit Desoto Falls and Little River Canyon, and spend time in the Canyon Center, which is beautiful and full of interesting facts. Watch the film! Visit nearby Mentone and Fort Payne. An easy walk to High Falls is well worth the drive, and take the time to visit Buck's Pocket for amazing views of the gorge.

On the weekends, you will not get a discount. During the week we got a 5% for over 62. $88.+ dollars is too much for a 2 night stay, was surprised with the cost for a state park, many added on costs. We stayed 3 nights and the pull thru was so (36) un-level, we had to move after one night. Also little water was at the hydrant. Next spot was great. We left to have some service work done on the RV at Tiffin and returned for 2 more nights, that is when we found out no discount for weekends. The camping spots are huge, wooded and very nice. water pressure is low, not sure why. Bath houses were a walk from every site, but I like that as you had no noise from the bathrooms at your site. If the total price was 35.00 a night I would return. There is a swim pool some where in the area, and a day area you have access to but we didn't use them. The camp ground entrance is gated. There is no size restriction on dogs and there were a lot of huge dogs, 2 were roaming freely. No restrictions on lights and there were a few campers and tents with Las Vegas lighting going on. I saw deer, squirrels and 1 scorpion while we were there, a nice 8 year old that asked if we needed help setting up when we arrived. As others have written, don't go by GPS, instead go to the park's web site and look at their written directions for arriving and departing. WiFi is from the bath house so park close to it if you need it. Most of the pull thoughts were on level. Ask for 62+ discount when you check in even if you have booked on line. We camped at DeSoto State Park in a Motorhome.

Our first experience in an Alabama State Park was a good one. Check in is at the campground store and took less than five minutes and we were off to the campground! The campground has a coded security gate and an Upper and Lower loop for back in sites. There is a large section in the middle for pull throughs. All the back in sites are angled as such that you feel like you have some privacy and are plenty long. We walked the campground several times and it looked like all the sites were pretty level(crushed gravel). The bath houses(clean and updated) are in the upper and lower sections and that is where the WiFi's signal is the best. The cable TV has about 30 channels and worked well for us. Dumpsters are located at the entrance/exit area. At the campground store they have some souvenirs and limited camping supplies. They have firewood for purchase for $5 a bundle. The wood was pretty green, making it hard to keep a fire going. There are several hiking trails within the park, some close to 2 miles in length with several waterfalls with varying degrees of difficulty. There is a lodge with a restaurant and several cabins. There's a playground/picnic area and a pool nearby but not in the campground itself. Overall this is one of the best parks we've been to! We camped at DeSoto State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Being that the campground is on top of Lookout Mountain, it takes about 20 minutes to get into downtown Fort Payne. There is a Walmart, Cracker Barrel, Chick Fil A, Lowes and such near the I-59 exchange. There is a local restaurant, the Bar B-Q Place that served a great Brisket plate! As others have said, come in to the park from Fort Payne(I-59 exit). Little River Canyon has a nice scenic drive and Desoto Falls is only a few miles outside the park and are both well worth it!

What a beautiful park on top of a mountain in rural NE Alabama! The spaces are roomy and it is woodsy and clean. It is easy to make a reservation on their website. We had to reserve and cancel three times due to some well issues at our home, but there was no problem, they email you back with a confirmation of the cancellation. They do require 72 hours notice. The park is laid out well. There are a couple of spots (hard to get) that are on a rock ledge overlooking the valley. The sites are roomy, level with gravel, all have a fire pit and picnic table. We were in #30 and it was full hookup with cable! We were pleasantly surprised! The cell service is even pretty good. I'm on their WiFi now typing this review. There are some pull through. We no longer toad, our rig is 24 feet and we had LOTS of room. There were some big rigs throughout. There are walking trails and great facilities, but it is rustic and not "cheesy" like some parks....right up our alley. There is also a lodge and restaurant within the park, cabins too. The only drawback when we arrived was that one of our neighbors assumed we all wanted to hear he and his friends play electric guitar and sing (country), but they weren't obnoxious and the ate dinner and stopped. They actually weren't half bad! Being on top of a mountain, in the woods, I thought it was kind of fun, my husband not so much, LOL. Weekends are always booked, as summer approaches they will fill up fast, reserve early if you can. We will return for sure. We camped at DeSoto State Park in a Motorhome.

We enjoyed our stay at Desoto State Park immensely. The sites were wide, level and made of concrete. The wifi in the park was outstanding, I was able to stream college football with absolutely no problems. The hiking trails are very nice and my sons really enjoyed the rock formation and the waterfalls. Checking into the park was a breeze with a very helpful staff. We will definitely return to Desoto State Park as it has become my 7 year olds favorite place to camp. We camped at DeSoto State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Excellent park that appears to have been recently remodeled. Excellent interior roads to and through gated campground. Two back-in areas and one pullthru area. Back-in sites have gravel pads. All sites are spacious and plenty long. For the pullthru sites we recommend most any on the outside of the loop for patio privacy. Might want to avoid the bottom of the hill. Deer are all over the place. We camped at DeSoto State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

If you are in a big rig do NOT come in from Mentone and then south on 89; come in from Fort Payne. Walmart in Fort Payne. Eat in Mentone at WildFlower Café and the Plow Share Bistro. Fantastic. Visit Desoto Falls, kayak upriver. Hike in the park unless you just had rain. Visit, view, hike in the Little River Canyon National Preserve. Mentone Color Festival is 4th weekend in October and was fun. Visit the CCC museum at the far park entrance.

Many pads have enough slope that jacking RV wheels off the ground is necessary to level. On Site 25 we were fully jacked up on the front and still not level. The staff allowed us to move the next day. On site 27 we were still wheels up but level. Some sites like 2, 29, and 51 would be almost level to begin with. A dozen or so other sites would be nearly level or easy to set up on with motorhomes. If this is critical, the staff would be able to suggest best available sites. Also if you want easy walking access to bathhouses without walking through other camp sites, select a site on the same side of the road as the bathhouse. While here through the week (quite / few campers) we saw lots of deer feeding mornings and evenings. There is some beautiful scenery including waterfalls to see in the area. We camped at DeSoto State Park in a Motorhome.
