Huge state park with awesome recreational activities already mentioned by others. Bring bikes! Best bike trails of any park we have been in. Bring binoculars...watch the Osprey, gators and the resident bald eagles! Paved, spacious full hookup sites. Only gripes - trash dumpsters at only one spot near entrance, a long way from most campsites; no dog bags. We camped at Gulf State Park Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

40 minute drive to NAS Pensacola - FREE awesome National Naval Aviation Museum (do the narrated tour). Also, catch Blue Angels practice if able! Gulf Shores Seafood - get the $20 (for two) low country boil and take it home to eat (shrimp, sausage, potatoes, corn).

We were in site 154 for 2 nights. Park has asphalt sites and we did have to level the trailer. There was no wifi at all, very little shade but foliage between sites. Not too close so was comfortable. This area though near the beach has very little wind. We left our awning out the whole time with no tiedowns! The morning we were leaving the sewer would not drain and was reported. We camped at Gulf State Park Campground in a Travel Trailer.

This is our favorite state park of all the states we've visited. There is so much to do that we can't get it all in during a short visit of a few days. There are paved walking/jogging/ bike paths that wind thru the back country or connect you to Orange Beach or Gulf Shores if you choose. There is a great huge beautiful beach on the Gulf with a fishing pier, a smaller swimming beach on Shelby Lake near a zipline, golf course, tennis courts, volley ball, dog park, swimming pool, nature center, etc. A great place for families. Sites are spacious but open so you can see what all the neighbors are up to. We camped at Gulf State Park Campground in a Motorhome.

We love Gulf State Park! We come once a year for a week with family. The park is clean and very big. There's a lot to do within the park. We love the bike trails and on ground swimming pool. Beaches are a bike ride away and you get a pass to go on the long pier when you camp here. Reservationists are very helpful and friendly. We look forward to coming every year and I think we'll continue this for a lifetime! We camped at Gulf State Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

This park is HUGE but awesome. There is so much to do here and the beach is so close. The campground cost is a bit high for a state park but it does include a 11% lodging fee and at 15% resort fee. The pool, trails, and beach are great. Park reservations get you free access to the fishing pier and parking at the pavilion. The staff is nice and the front office is manned 24/7. Trail system is great and has a mixture of paved and unpaved trails. Love the boardwalks that go over the lakes, canals, and marshes, which are great for watching wildlife. Got to see a bobcat crossing the road and a baby cottonmouth, which was promptly relocated by park staff, but no alligators. Give yourself a bit more time to get there. You will have to go through Gulf Shores or Orange Beach traffic to get to the park. If you go through Orange Beach you will have to pay a toll to cross a bridge. However it is nice having these vacation destinations nearby to get good food and other entertainment for the kids. Camp store rents bicycles so if you forget it or don't have room you will still be able to ride around. We had site 48 which was on a quiet little cul-de-sac. It made the park seem small and didn't even notice that there were 400+ other campers. I would avoid site 49 as there is a little trail right next to it that runs to and from the pool/camp store/nature center area. Bath house and restrooms are a hair dated but are very clean. Cell coverage (AT&T) was good but data lagged significantly. OTA was great with Mobile and Pensacola nearby. We would camp here again. We camped at Gulf State Park Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

If you get a spot on the main road, Raccoon Road, you will have LOTS of traffic all day and night long. Recommend that you get a spot on an outer ring road on the pull-thrus at the very end of Raccoon Road, sites 447-468. The vegetation at the sites along the Boat Canal and Middle Lake a fairly thick and there are signs warning you about alligators, although we did not see any, and this cuts down on your outdoor space a bit.

This is one of our favorite State Parks! The park is HUGE! It is over 6100 acres with 496 campsites. There is a lot to do - kayaking, camping, boating, canoeing, hiking, biking, swimming (the beach and the pool are both wonderful), nature watching, lounging, eating at the area restaurants, visiting local bars, etc. There is so much to do, it is almost impossible to do it all in a week's stay. The staff is very nice and responsive. The sites are mostly large. There are some older smaller sites but, for the most part, they have plenty of room for two vehicles plus your RV. Most sites are Full-Hook-Ups. When making the reservations, they let you know which aren't. Water pressure is ok, when the park is full. Ours hovered around 30psi. Not great, but not terrible, either. The power seemed to be very stable, even with 496 sites running their AC in 91 degree temps. The only downside is VERY little shade. We always have a great time, when we visit. When coming south, do not take AL 135 (AL Coastal Connection). Your GPS will try to take you that way. Resist the urge to follow it as the traffic is terrible and the road very narrow. Go all the way on AL 59 (Gulf Shores Pkwy) to AL 182 (Beach Blvd). Take that east and enter the campground area at the traffic light to State Park Rd 2. We camped at Gulf State Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Pensacola NAS (home of the Blue Angels) and the USS Alabama are both within about an hour's drive. Both are well worth visiting. Pensacola NAS has the air museum and the lighthouse. All are accessible to the public (for a fee of course).

This state park is a bit pricier than most state parks but is well worth the price! Lots of amenities and activities to do. We only stayed one night but will definitely be back with our bicycles. We had a full hookup pull thru site. We did not have to unhook if we did not want to, but we did so we could do some exploring of the area. The restrooms were super nice and very clean. This is one of the best campsites we have stayed at. We camped at Gulf State Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Stayed a couple nights mid week, prior to Memorial Day. We stayed in space 265. A FHU site that backed up to the lake. There was nice spacing between the sites and we were able to get Satellite working with no problem. Cell coverage was fine. Great bike riding campground. We rode to the pier, around a couple lakes and through the forest. Also a nice Nature Center, with some live Raptors, to take in. We camped at Gulf State Park Campground in a Motorhome.

This park is very nice with lots of trails to hike or bike. Hiking through the tree lined paved paths had a lot of bugs, but hiking on the boardwalks do not. 3/4 mile walk to the Gulf! Garbage and recycling area is a little inconvenient as there is one area for 500 sites, however the area is clean. There is a lot to do in the area as well. The highlights of this park are the biking paths and the beach. You can ride your bike to town, through varied ecosystems, to see Lefty the resident aligator that EVERYONE seems to know, to the beach and back to your campsite. There is an interesting nature center, a nice, large laundry facility and an adequate camp store. We did not use the large swimming pool, tennis courts or boat dock. We took advantage of one scheduled park activity--a tour of the extremely long Gulf State Park fishing pier--led by local naturalist. She was extremely knowledgeable about the birds and fish of the area and the ocean. It was fun and informative. We camped at a pull through site on the boat canal. All services performed well. Wifi is available, but not the strongest. It is a wonderful destination State park. We plan to return and stay longer. We camped at Gulf State Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Nightly rate is based on the monthly rate. This was our second stay in this great AL state park in a beautiful area. If you enjoy outdoor activities, this is the place to be. Easy access to miles of bike and walking trails, close to the beach, some great kayaking, and a decent dog park. We like the pull through sites on either end of the park for best for having less through traffic and close access to the bike trails. The monthly rate is only about $100 more than a two weeks stay, so a great deal. Open sky for satellite reception, but our ATT hotspot was very slow. Long term sites book fast, so make reservations early. They do offer a wait list which we were on (and on again for 2019). We camped at Gulf State Park Campground in a Motorhome.

This place is huge!!! I really enjoyed this campground because the back country trail system runs right through it. The paved bike trails can take you to the beach or to the hidden Walmart on Ft. Morgan road. Our campsite was spacious and backed up to trees, so it felt a little more secluded and not so cramped. None of the campsites have a fire ring, which I'm not used to, but you are allowed to have one as long as it's 6 inches off the ground. There are community fire rings in each section but it was too far from our campsite. The check in staff was friendly. Just a word of warning. Check in is 3pm. If you try to come early you will be sitting there till 3pm if your site isn't ready. Fortunately our site was available. Bottom line, its a huge campground with plenty to do and I will definitely be back. We camped at Gulf State Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

Excellent park, full amenities. Stay comes with free access to beach front pier. Lots of biking and walking trails and Nature walks. Sites are spacious and attractive. We will go back next year and spend more time exploring the park and surrounding area. This is a large park with a Lot of spaces, but all but 50 are reserved for 30 day or longer stays during the peak winter months. The reservations people stated that they are trying to change that though. Speaking of the reservations system, it sucks. We were never able to contact a live person at the park. Tried calling multiple times, got the "after hours" service most of the time. Left multiple (more than 3) messages asking about availability of sites, but never got a call back. Finally we were able to book two nights on line, and when we showed up, we were able to extend our stay by one night. When attempting to book for next year, were told at the park entrance office that there weren't any openings for our request stay, but that we could go to the park headquarters and get placed on a "waiting list". We almost didn't go, but decided to anyway. When we arrived, we requested to be put on the waiting list for 8 days next March. The lady said, well, we have a choice of three sites that are open for the time period you want, which do you want to reserve? What the heck?!? The Park HQ doesn't talk to the Park Entrance office apparently, as we ran into two other couples who had had similar experiences. They seriously need to revamp or fire their "after hours service" as well. Book early if going Nov through end of March. We camped at Gulf State Park Campground in a Motorhome.
