This is a very nice State Park with a lot to do. The amenity listing for the park shows they are NOT big rig friendly, but I saw several 43' motorhomes and 42' 5th-Wheels in Campground 1. Campground 1 has all full hookup sites, and is the tightest to maneuver your "Big Rig" RV in, but it can be done. Campground 2 (just across the creek from Campground 1) is 30amp water and electric only, but can easily accommodate "Big Rigs" in several sites. Campground 3 is an enigma! It is large spread out, and could easily handle Big Rigs, but the only way to get there is over a load limit bridge with a MH limit of 16,000 lbs. If they would increase the bridge capacity, this park could easily be "Big Rig Friendly." BTW. . . Campground 3 is 30/50amp, water and electric only. We camped at Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park in a Motorhome.

This is a busy, family oriented campground with a lot going on all the time. There is a small train for the kids with a very loud engine that runs during the day. Lots of kids on bikes. Sites are pretty close together. One huge negative for us is that it's not big rig friendly. Not for class A diesel pushers anyway. If you get assigned a site in campground 3, it's on the other side of a small bridge with weight restrictions. Our coach at 36,000 pounds was too heavy to cross. We ended up at a makeshift campsite with only 30A power. It worked for the one night we needed. Interior roads are pretty tight as well. Verizon signal was one bar. We camped at Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park in a Motorhome.

Hard park to rate. The historical part is spectacular. The park itself and the tree cover is beautiful. Lovely streams flow through the park and between camping loops. Many other reviews go into good detail on park activities and the historical aspect so I won't repeat. The downside for me was the campground part. I can't imagine camping here on a busy weekend and in a full park. Many of the back-in sites in the third loop have absolutely no buffer between sites. No room for fire rings. Picnic tables are small and sometimes oddly placed. Longer RVs will be challenged to find a spot, especially for their tow vehicle or toad, too, unless they luck into a pull-through site. Campground loop road pitted in spots, so drive nice and slow. First-come, first-served, so arrive early if you can. Over-the-air TV signal good; Verizon signal slow.

Only a few miles from I-20 south of Birmingham, but very windy 2-lane road to get there. Even longer windy road if you take the exit off of the B'ham beltway. It's doable, but take it slow. We camped at Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park in a Motorhome.

Huge park with great museum about the ironworks. No reservations taken. We arrived and found out it was spring break and the park was packed! RVs very close in full hookup area. We were directed to Lot 3 and found a pull through-where the spots are nearby but not as close as in other areas. As a first time camper to this park, direction signs within the campground repainted and at checkin an information sheet of hiking trails , times miniature train and ice cream shop operate would be helpful. Checkin person said "things are crazy here". We camped at Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This is a lovely park. Staff was excellent. We were in the FHU area in which the sites are very close. If we were to return we would choose one of the WE only sites. They seemed spaced further apart and this time of year, and off season, were practically empty. It was raining when we stayed so we were not able to enjoy the lovely park itself, but it was very pretty. We could not pull through our "pull-through" site due to trees and had to back out. It did seem that there where a couple of units in the FHU area that were longer term, as they had plastic shed structures built beside them, we stayed between two of these. It was a bit unsightly. No reservations, so First Come First Serve only. Unless you absolutely need the sewer hook up I would suggest staying in the w/e hook up area. That is what we plan to do next time we visit. We camped at Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tannehill is a great place to camp in Central Alabama. 25.00 gets you a spacious site with Water & Electric. Full hook ups are 30.00 and were full when I was there. They do not take reservations, it is all FCFS. The water and electric sites seemed more spacious than the full hook up sites. It is heavily treed, so satellite reception may not be possible. The campsites are about average really, but the park is definitely something to come and see if you are interested in American History. The iron blast furnaces circa 1860 are beautifully restored. There are some decent hiking trails, flowing creeks with ducks that make their way around from site to site to be fed. Lots of families and children. Mountain bike trails, hiking trails, restored cracker style cabins. Local artisans on weekends during high season and once a month in low season. This place is a step back in time to a simpler place. Has a small guage railroad operating occasionally (not when I was here) that looks like a good time for kids. Lot of friendly Alabamans camping here. No riff raff here either. We really enjoyed Tannehill, it is a great stop over in Central Alabama, just 30 miles south of Birmingham. Fire rings are made of stones placed in a circle. No lantern hooks or grills at site, although there are common areas with grills nearby. Small picnic Table. We camped at Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Plan some time to hike around the park, there is at least a half day worth of things to see and do. Go to the Alabama Iron & Steel Museum on site (2.00 admission). Olde Tyme Sweet Shop makes candy. Blast furnaces were pretty amazing.

This is great state park. It has lots of amenities we love, like the mountain biking trails. It's a perfect place for mountain biking or hiking. Lots of interesting historical artifacts throughout the park. The park is huge and includes an area for festivals and fairs (although there was nothing going on when we were there). There's a small store onsite for supplies. Lots of trees in the park and creeks meandering throughout. You can spend at least an hour at the museum learning about the iron works in Alabama.

The campground itself has multiple loops, some with FHU. We had a spacious site in the nonFHU area. Services were fine, but you're far from any amenities outside the campground. This is one of our favorite state parks anywhere; we're looking forward to staying here for a longer time next time we're driving through Alabama. Tannehill is my absolute favorite place to camp. Even though the price is $25 for 4 people, they didn't charge for my 2-year-old grandson. That's how you treat guest and they will return. The park is shady and safe for children to ride their bikes and play all day. The staff is super friendly. The bath/wash houses are clean and require a code but that is okay because you can access them any time, not like some campgrounds that only open from 8-10. There is even a tub for handicap access or for washing smaller children who have managed to get filthy from all the fun. The water is good for swimming, fishing (I caught my first rainbow trout!) or kayaking. If you have never been you must visit and book ahead for a Trade Day weekend! Interior roads to camping area are narrow, but camping area roads wide. Park has historical sites, play ground, wide grassy areas and a stream. Plenty for kids to do and a chance to learn something. Site was wide gravel paved pull through, easy to get in and out of. Wifi was OK. We camped at Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Tannehill is an interesting state park built on the site of old ironworks. (Alabama is famous for iron-making, like Bethlehem PA or other old steel-making towns.) There are some historical ruins, a museum, some rebuilt cottages (now used for crafts sales and special events), etc. The property itself is spread out and there are lots of trees and a nice stream. Many places to walk, hike, walk your dog. You choose your own campsite after paying. A very pleasant and enjoyable campground overall.

Two comments: One, they do not take reservations. (This must be a nightmare for families arriving at the end of a long day. We were there in April and there were plenty of sites.) Two, some of the sites along the stream have electric wires that hang down so low that our medium-height RV barely cleared them. We never noticed the wires, in fact, until we were leaving and realized that if our RV were one foot higher we would have pulled down a bunch of live wiring. Careful! We camped at Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park in a Motorhome.

This is a State park. It is really a nice place to stop for a night. Staff is helpful and friendly. We only had water and electric but the site was large enough to stay hooked up and had plenty of room. There is no TV reception to speak of and our site was not good for our sat dish. As mentioned before it is a state park so there are lots of trees which makes it somewhat big rig unfriendly. We have a 36 ft RV so we took it real slow. We were very surprised how nice this park was. There is a lot to do, many historical buildings, lots of trails and beautiful scenery, even a miniature train to ride in the summer. Water, sewer, and electric sites. The only ding is that the camping sites are very close together but the park makes up for this. Will definitely stay here again.
