Catoma Loop in Gunter Hill COE Park is as good as it gets if you like large wooded sites, peace, quiet and full hookups. All interior roads are paved and the sites pads are concrete. Each site has a large gravel patio with a fire pit, lantern post with a shelf, BBQ grill and large table. There is no cable and satellite reception would be available only at a handful of sites. Over the air TV reception was very good, however. I had 2-3 bars of Verizon service.

Many sites have a view of the creeks that surround the campground. The large bath house is very nice and has a laundry. While you are deep in the woods of Catoma, Al., Prattville with all the shopping and restaurants you could want is less than 15 minutes away as is downtown Montgomery. My only negative comment is the grass was in need of cutting. It was high when we arrived Monday and had not been cut when left Friday morning. The Antioch loop is a different story. The roads are ruff and tight. The sites aren't much better either. I would not describe Antioch as poor but doesn't approach the Catoma Loop. We camped at Gunter Hill COE in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed in the Catoma loop which was great. The sites were wide, level and easy to back into. There was a good distance between sites and a lot of visual separation as well. The Catoma loop is the best laid out campground we have seen. The Antioch loop was a different story. The road was narrow, tight turns and very full of pot holes. It would not be a good choice for a big rig. We camped at Gunter Hill COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Lovely place. Lots of tall shade trees, had a site (#101) near the river. We actually got a satellite signal here. Main road paved, old but no problems to drive on. Gravel sites look level, there is a playground and basketball court, plus a nice small park with a covered dining area. We camped at Gunter Hill COE in a Travel Trailer.

Great Corp of Engineers campground. Sites are large, level, long, concrete pads. Well separated, mostly shaded, some with views of the water. We were very fortunate to be there when the local Dulcimer group was hosting a get together. They practiced each afternoon and it provided great entertainment at no charge. We camped at Gunter Hill COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Antioch loop is old and W/E only, restroom/showers are dated but clean, the laundry room was missing the washer, the dryer was broken (Apr). I was not able to level with 10 inch lift, gravel site, old wooden picnic table, grill and fire ring. The park has a large concrete boat ramp and parking area and restroom adjacent to the launch. Verizon 2 bars. OTA TV received major networks. We camped at Gunter Hill COE in a Motorhome.

An absolutely beautiful campground will full hookups, huge level concrete pads, beautiful trees, picnic table, fire ring, charcoal grill, on a beautiful river... I could go on and on. Only negative is that you are not very close to any restaurants or grocery stores (25 mi. drive). Roads are big and in impeccable shape. Easy to get our big rig around. Friendly neighbors. Cute little playground for the kiddos. I would stay here again and again while in the Montgomery area. We camped at Gunter Hill COE in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

This campground has never let us down. We've camped here 3 times (only on the Catoma side which is newer w/ full hook ups) and every time the grounds were well taken care of and the campsite upon arrival was perfect. We were in site 48 this time (Feb 22-25,2018). It is next to the playground. We were far enough away to not have kids running near our site but close enough to see our kids playing at the playground from our campsite. We did not use the bath house so I cant comment on that. Biking around the campground is nice. There is one short trail that leads to a closed bridge but other than that you're riding within the campground but that is still pleasant. The dock overlooking the water is a great spot to sit and bird or boat watch. Overall we enjoy coming here. Others have mentioned the paper mill smell. We smelled it one of the days but it wasn't that bad. Very happy with our stay and we'll be back. We camped at Gunter Hill COE in a Travel Trailer.

This was our first time to stay at Gunter Hill. The sites were easy to back in to, level and wide. The park has a very nice playground for the kids. You do need to know that there are 2 playgrounds one is new and very nice the other is older and does not have as much to do. We were also able to catch a few fish from the nearby Catoma Creek. If you go to this park you will need to have a lot of outside lighting, as well as lights on any bike that you take, because there are no street lights. This campground is very dark at night, it is also very quiet. Overall we enjoyed our stay at Gunter Hill and plan to return. We camped at Gunter Hill COE in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

We stopped here for an overnight on our way to the Florida panhandle. What a great surprise. This is another excellent COE campground but with sewer as well as electric and water. It is located about 20 minutes west of Montgomery, AL. The rural roads getting here are a little narrow but well maintained and are really no problem navigating. The on duty park attendant at the main gate was very friendly and full of information on the park and nearby areas. After passing through the front gate where you register, the roads are absolutely near perfect right to the campsites. The park itself is on Catoma Creek which is part of the backwaters of the Alabama River. It is very scenic with many large hickory and pine trees acting as shade throughout the park. Our site was very large with good shade and nearby a viewing dock of the creek behind us through the woods. The site was easy to get into and very level. All utilities were where they belong and worked well. In addition to a 90' long paved site, it also had a large nice crushed gravel area for a tent with a good picnic table, fire ring w/ grill and a lantern post. The park has 142 sites and sites 1-75 were recently renovated with concrete pads and I believe, should all include sewer. The park offers nice basketball courts and good playgrounds as well as good hiking and biking options. Showers and a laundry area are also available but we did not use. Overall this is a beautiful park/campground even on a chilly, rainy day when we were here. We would definitely camp here again and recommend to all. We camped at Gunter Hill COE in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

About 25 minutes to the west is the Lowndes Interpretive Center which we visited on a previous trip. This is located approximately midway between Selma, AL and Montgomery which was the route taken by those seeking their civil rights during the 60s. This is an excellent place to learn of their historic march and about the civil rights movement that lead to the Civil Right Act.

We were in the middle of hurricane season and the Gulf was getting pounded so we needed a place to stay for a night or two on the way down to Gulf State Park. We called and the attendant said they could accommodate us for a couple of nights. The attendants were super nice, giving us a list of what was available and letting us go choose sites, talking with us about the area and where to go for good local food. The campground is BEAUTIFUL and well maintained. The sites were fairly large and level. In fact we didn't even disconnect from our truck for the night. This will definitely be on our list of places to stop in the future. We camped at Gunter Hill COE in a Tent Trailer.

Overall Rating:

I stayed here one night in pull through site 39 in the Catoma Loop. This park has two loops -- Antioch and Catoma. They are quite different. I was in the Catoma Loop which is newly renovated and very big rig friendly. The sites are paved, very long and spread out, and have sewer connections. The Antioch Loop has much smaller sites and tighter turns on the road. Both loops have sites with water views but there is no swimming. The two loops are completely separate. Site 39 was huge with a grass lawn and woods behind and a sewer hookup. It was totally level. The only downside is that this campground is quite a way from the main highway for someone just stopping the night like I was. Verizon was passable at best. Electric and water and sewer were perfect. Price reflects a senior pass discount. We camped at Gunter Hill COE in a Motorhome.

We stopped here for a few days on our way to FL. This is a very nice Corp park. The Catoma side is great for large trailers and RV's. the roads are paved, very large concrete back in and pull thru sties that have full hook up including sewer. Many large trees making the sites shady. The park is quiet and clean. There is a dollar general store at the entrance making it nice if you needed a few items. Montgomery is a short drive. For those with boats there is a nice boat ramp access. We will stop here again. We camped at Gunter Hill COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Absolutely beautiful escape campground. Sites are all concrete, many arced pull-thrus and all with sewer in our section. Very cooperative management. Nice pavilion to walk down and view the river. Local TV works fine, but no wi-fi and a weak Verizon signal. Still, a place we would eagerly return. Only 15-20 minutes to downtown Montgomery for excellent sight-seeing and history study. Large long shady cement pads. We stayed in #44 in the Catoma Loop for4 days. When you walked out the door you were facing the woods but could still see what was happening around you when sitting out. Sites have good room between them. #36 looked to be the best site because it was long and on the water for fishing. The other loop is an older part of the campground very wooded and close together but did have some nice water sites. Would stay here again. We camped at Gunter Hill COE in a Fifth Wheel.
