Overall Rating:

The campground is located at the end of McCarthy road next to the Kennicott River and the pedestrian footbridge in Wrangell-St Elias National Park. McCarthy Road is a 60 mile dirt road that is completely full of potholes and rutted. It took us about 3.5 hours to make the 60-mile drive in our 31' class C. Drive it with extreme caution and have at least one spare tire. Base Camp is roughly 80 acres in size and is simply a wide open space. Anywhere on the property where you can drive your RV or pitch a tent is fair game for camping. The Kennicott River and glaciers provide an incredible backdrop to this amazing place. It's $20 a night and the only toilets available are outhouses. All fire rings are just rocks placed in circles by previous campers. The location absolutely can't be beat since it's right at the footbridge where you can grab a van ride to McCarthy or Kennecott Mine for $5 each way. You won't need a dingy vehicle here since you can only walk or take the shuttle vans into McCarthy and Kennecott Mine. In mid-August there were no crowds and we could easily take advantage of everything in Wrangell-St Elias National Park. This place is all about location and if you love adventure this place won't disappoint. Google Root Glacier Base Camp to see overhead and street views of this awesome place. We camped at Base Camp Root Glacier in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Take a guided tour of the Kennecott Mine provided by St Elias Alpine guides. They also offer guided hikes of Root Glacier or you can venture onto the glacier yourself. We also hiked to Bonanza Mine, a 13-mile round trip hike that offered incredible views of Blackburn Mountain.
