Convenience store, gas station (& diesel), diner, RV spots on large gravel area with electricity only (separate water fill and dump stations). Although sites back up to highway, traffic is so limited that it's not a noise problem. Powered sites are level but tight side to side, so if they are busy you may have close neighbors. There are dry camping sites back in the woods too. We stayed in late May and were only RV there (except for one whose plates expired in 1994). Friendly staff. Verizon signal OK. WiFi worked well at the office only. There may be one RV park closer to McCarthy at the Chitina (pronounced Chit-na) airport, but this was close enough to be convenient. We camped at Kenny Lake Mercantile & RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

If visiting Wrangell-St. Elias NP, stop at the visitor's center a few miles south of Glenallen for info. They also offer a very informative audio CD to play while driving the 58-mile dirt road to McCarthy. That road was in relatively good condition when we drove it in late May 2018.

Overall Rating:

We camped here to be close to Wrangell-St. Elias national park. This is the closest place except one in Chitina that didn't take reservations (although now I realize that wouldn't be a problem). This is your typical Alaska multi-purpose business - groceries/videos/souvenirs/diesel/propane/gas/hotel/laundry/showers/diner - except they have no cook right now so the diner is closed. The RV park is a gravel parking lot with lots of room to maneuver; wish they'd made the sites a bit wider. The site was not as level as it looked; high at the edge of the lot. No water at the site but there's a place to fill. Didn't use restrooms or showers but they were in the building with the hotel. We camped at Kenny Lake Mercantile & RV Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

This campground is 25 miles from the entrance to Wrangell-St. Elias national park. The 60-mile drive into the park is gravel, speed limit 35 mph. Very pretty, but lots of low clouds prevented us seeing the mountains. We did take a flight-seeing trip with Wrangell Air, it was AMAZING. There are countless, even unnamed glaciers, the largest is the size of Rhode Island. The views of the mountains and glaciers and verdant valleys were just stupendous. This was a splurge for us. Just do it!

We stayed here while visiting Kennecott mine and McCarthy. It is a no frills campground but it has what you need: lots of room to navigate, an electric hook-up, level spot and space to park. There was a dump out front and they also sold propane. We also had a picnic table. There is a small store which has convenience items if you forgot anything. Verizon is ok but there are no over-the-air television stations. But, truth to tell, we were too busy visiting the National Park visitor center and the Kennecott mine for time to watch TV. We camped at Kenny Lake Mercantile & RV Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Be sure to take the Kennecott mine tour which will take you into the 14-story concentration building and through several other buildings. Take it slow on the road to Kennecott and McCarthy and take time to view the fish wheels, the bridges and trestles and the scenery.

We used Wrangell Mountain Air for flight from Chitina to McCarthy and return. Hotel restaurant in Chitina is good. For those wanting to traverse the 60 miles of road to McCarthy, we drove it. Go for it - slowly !!

Overall Rating:

Previous reviews apply. Rate higher than previously reported. "Restaurant" not in operation - staffing; no issue with us. Gasoline is competitive with Valdez - a bit more than Glennallen. Electric-only for RV's (we used 30A - no issues) - no pull-throughs, but the back-ins are pretty much any length. Water-fill is included in price, as is dump; both points handy to use. Store has a variety of necessities - understand that this place is near the end of the supply-chain, and prices reflect same. We did not use showers/washers/dryers. Fire/picnic/pavilion available, but not at each site. Felt comfortable leaving RV at this location for LONG day-trip to McCarthy/Kennecott - was a bit uncomfortable with the optional sites at Chitina - on the east side of the Copper River Bridge. The added 20 miles was not problematic. Be advised that Class C/A and tows will need to slow significantly before Chitina - road conditions. Staff at this park is typical of most places in YT and AK - friendly, and appreciative of your business. We camped at Kenny Lake Mercantile & RV Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

McCarthy/Kennecott is ~80 miles east - via Chitina. Road between Kenny Lake and Chitina is great for about ten miles - remaining 10 miles are easily negotiable if you are patient, have no one following you. 60 miles to McCarthy are negotiable with trailer or motor-home - anticipate 2.5-3 hours, or - if in truck/car - 1.5-2 hours.

Kenny Lake Mercantile RV seems to be "safe-bet" for leaving RV unattended.

Just a wide spot in the road beside a general store and restaurant. 30 amp only in back-in parking lot. There are 10 or so treed sites with no hookups that are nicer but very tight. No big rigs in these that are at $15.00 per night. Not much around here but I'd rather stay somewhere else. We camped at Kenny Lake Mercantile & RV Park in a Motorhome.

The options around this area are very limited. Having said that, this park is pretty good. There is a small grocery, cafe, laundry with use of a dump station. About everything one needs for a day or two while visiting the park. No a destination resort but fills all the necessities as a short term base camp. The owners seemed very nice and the grounds clean. 30 amp power is available at the back in sites only. WiFi is useable at the store only. Verizon phone worked well here. Movie rentals at the store is a plus since there are no useable off air stations that I could find. I would stay here again if visiting Kennicott / McCarthy. I cannot add much to previous reviews except that the staff was quite friendly and helpful. The "parking lot" aspect was no problem because there was hardly anybody there. We got the Wi-Fi well. We had (and needed) only electricity. The place served its purpose of being a take-off point for McCarthy and Kennicott. The gas pump was very busy, but not a problem. The washers and dryers apparently serve the whole community; when I took a shower, it ran out of hot water very quickly because the washers had used it up. The no hookup sites were very nice, and if we stayed there again, which we would do if visiting McCarthy, we would probably stay in that area. We camped at Kenny Lake Mercantile & RV Park in a Motorhome.

Note that this campground is not actually in Cooper Center. It is in the Village of Kenny Lake, thus the name, and is about 25 miles from Cooper Center. The reason for staying here is to be nearer McCarthy/Kennicott (about 90 miles – 3 hours) so you can drive it as a day trip or overnight, leaving the RV at this campground. This is the last fuel (gas or diesel) that you will find on the road to McCarthy. The use of the onsite dump and fresh water fill is an extra $5.00 per visit. It is a parking lot (with electrical hookups) next to the road beside the store and gas station. There are also some sites without hookups that are more private and widely spaced in a wooded area. We would have stayed in one of these sites except that we were leaving the RV for a night and felt more secure with it being more in the open area. Though not terrible, being right next to the road, there is road noise. It is not a major highway, but does have considerable traffic. The WiFi was a weak signal at our site, but we could get it, and it was fairly fast. Our Verizon phone worked well here. We did not try the data MiFi. The sites are quite close, but the manager tries to spread RV’s so that there is space in between. This campground works for a few days to visit the area but is probably not a place you would want to linger. We camped at Kenny Lake Mercantile & RV Park in a Motorhome.

New, local ownership, so things were still in flux during our stay. Only back-in sites have park-generated, 30A electric. Water and dump are across park from electric sites. Pull-thrus are in trees between back-ins and dump, but have no electricity. We stayed here twice, going to and coming from Valdez. Our first two-day stay was for our one-day van tour to Kennicott, with the van picking us up at the RV park. Would stay here again as was a good value for a remote Alaska RV park. This RV park is under new ownership (according to the sign outside). It has electric-only sites, but it does have a dump station. You have to pay $5 extra if you want to fill your fresh water tanks or use the dump station. (Our $25 rate includes one of these extra fees.) The sites are all back-in, but since all sites are along the edge of a large parking lot, we had no problem here. The on-site restaurant has gone out of business. Like others, we stayed here in order to have as short a drive as possible to/from McCarthy. This is the only diesel gas between here and McCarthy (and there is none in McCarthy), so the diesel price is quite a bit higher than Glennallen or Valdez. It served the purpose, but nothing more. We camped at Kenny Lake Mercantile & RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This was another parking lot style camp in Alaska. The showers are paid. The owners are friendly and helpful. Sites are close to the roadway but there is not a lot of traffic. There needs to be more space between the sites. We could not extend awnings and slides almost touch. However, there are few options in the area and this is a good place to base camp if you are going to Kennecott Cooper Mines in your tow vehicle. It’s a parking lot in front of the general store with electric hookups for RV’s to tie into. They do provide free internet (worked just fine for us) and they have clean bathrooms and laundry (but you have to pay to use showers). There is a tiny cafe that serves hearty food at reasonable prices, and everyone was real friendly. We stayed here because it’s on the road up to Kennicot/McCarthy in Wrangell/St Elias NP – from here you can make it a day trip. We camped at Kenny Lake Mercantile & RV Park in a Motorhome.

We stayed here for two nights. The park is gravel and all the level sites are back in with ample space between them. We stayed here because we wanted to visit the Kennicott Mine in the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. It is a deserted 1938 copper mine. It is a 90 mile drive from this park but the best park in the area. The road in the national park is a dirt/gravel 60 miles long road and there are no facilities other than lodging at the end of the 60 miles-no fuel. It is well worth the 3 hour one way drive to see the huge deserted mine now in the national park. Make sure you have excellent tires on your vehicle.
