We booked the first 3 nights in a row we found when we checked for reservations 2 weeks in advance. You have to book thru system so be somewhere with a good connection and you have to setup an account. You are charged $10/person entry fee and then given a refund for America the Beautiful pass if you go to Backcountry Wilderness Center (not Visitors Center). Be aware that if someone cancels they do NOT release the site; we had many sites around us that were not occupied. Deanali is manical about "preserving nature". Not encouraging about hiking on your own and you must take an expensive ($35-70) bus trip or tour to get past the first 15 miles and close to Denali. If the weather is bad you won't see it. Savage River loop trail was nice hike as was the Horseshoe Lake trail. Our spot had picnic table and fire pit (but no fires were allowed); nearby toilets and bear proof garbage. Quite hours after 10pm and generator only 11-2 and 4-8. No cell reception (Verizon) at campground. Surrounded by trees and shrub no views. Showers, laundry, flush toilets at check in location. We camped at Savage River Campground (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Try to get in the park rather than outside at commercial sites - its much, much nicer and easier to explore the park. The further in campground that allows RVs only allows you to drive your tow in and out ONE TIME while camping there so plan accordingly. Savage River is the 13 miles in on the road, away from the bustle of the entry yet able to come and go.

We visited Savage River CG while staying at Riley Creek CG and wanted to give an update since the last review was in 2010. We didn't see anything to change from earlier reviews. This is a much nicer and quieter CG than Riley Creek. Great hiking trails within 1/4 mile of CG. The main down side is, no cell phone signal (Verizon), so no internet from our MiFi device. Many of the campsites have a view of the mountains. CG fees are $22 & $28 with 50% off for senior pass. "A" campsites are for RV's over 30' & "B" sites are for under 30'. Not all "B" sites will take a 29" RV and not all "A" sites will take a 40' RV. Arrive by noon for best selection of campsites. Fill your water tank and dump at Riley Creek CG before coming to Savage River. Signs at water spigots request that you not fill your RV water tank. You MUST get your camping pass at the Wilderness Access Center (WAC) or Riley Creek Mercantile before going to Savage Creek CG. We camped at Savage River Campground (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

Nice dry quiet campground 15 miles into the park. We preferred this to Riley, due to the noise from the park entrance. Moose and grizzly bears and other wildlife passed through the CG. Has a good view of Mt. Denali when it occasionally emerges. Be careful of the large pull through sites. The curve of the site and the 4x4 timbers along the edges can fool you. I should have backed into mine, rather than pulling in. Wound up moving the 4x4 just to park. (Shhh!) Rate based on Golden Age pass. We camped at Savage River Campground (NPS Campground) in a Fifth Wheel.

We loved the short walk to the river and the nearby hiking trails. Of course, none of the campgrounds in Denali have power or water, but the scenery more than makes up for the inconvenience. We saw beautiful sunsets, and there was almost no sky brightness and plenty of wildlife. We saw snowshoe hairs and a vole near the river. The campsites were closer together than I liked but still private. They had back-in sites for shorter rigs and a series of arc-shaped pull-through slots for longer rigs. Our pull-through was not very level, but it was easy enough to get in and out of. The flush toilets were rustic but clean. Bear-proof trash cans were located at the sites, and there was water available nearby. It was not really wilderness camping, but you did feel as though you were out in the middle of the wild. Our campground host was very friendly and helpful, and a ranger gave a lecture two out of the three nights we were there. The one downside of our location was that it was a long drive to everywhere. The only showers and the dump station were at Denali’s Riley Creek Campground at the bottom of the mountain (15-20 minutes away). The laundry room at Riley Creek looked excellent, but we didn’t use it. We camped at Savage River Campground (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

Sites of varying size, and levelness. One loop (half?) are pull-through sites and the only ones that would accommodate bigger rigs. About 30 minutes from services: visitor center, store, dump, etc. While because of the smaller number of sites, the 'activity' level may be less than Riley. I really didn't see much of a difference, you're parked in the trees at either. You can catch the shuttle every 30 minutes, after departure, you have 30 minutes to access any services: arrange/change shuttle etc. You might even get cell service at the entrance, can't remember. We camped at Savage River Campground (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

Difficult to get reservations, but well worth the effort. Outstanding wilderness setting. Site selection is first-come first-served. We arrived early so no problems finding a site for our 29 ft 5th wheel. If you are big and arrive late you could have problems. We camped at Savage River Campground (NPS Campground) in a Fifth Wheel.
