This campground is nothing fancy, but the location is great. It is right on the water with a glacier in view. The people who run it are very nice. We plan to stay here again on our way back up from Homer. We camped at Portage Valley Cabins & RV Park in a Motorhome.

Most sites are in a large, level gravel lots with plenty of room to maneuver around the rows. Snow-capped mountains can be seen all around A large community shelter is available with gas grills for cooking your dinner and a large fire pit where folks gather in the evening. We camped at Portage Valley Cabins & RV Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Visit the US forest service visitor center four miles east for any information you need about the area. The tunnel to Whittier is $13 round trip for cars; Whittier is a tiny town with great views (although it was fogged in the day we went).

Beautiful area and nice owners and staff. They have a big welcoming fire every night and even fired up the group sauna 1 night. Great way to meet other travelers. Great bike trail to the visitor center!! We camped at Portage Valley Cabins & RV Park in a Motorhome.

This is just a big level gravel lot but the scenery and the proximity to Whittier and Alyeska makes this a fantastic stop. The office personnel where nice and the fellow campers were engaging around the cg sponsored evening fire. The electric and water were good. We will stop here on our way back from Kenai. We camped at Portage Valley Cabins & RV Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Don't miss the Bore Tide. Bird Point is not as good as the turnouts that are closer to Portage. We got to see surfers ride the tide at several turnouts as the Bore Tide progress down Turnagain Arm. Whittier is a place to visit but parking is $11 and the tunnel is $13. I wouldn't do it again.

This park has some of the most spectacular views surrounding it. There are great paths to walk and moose tracks are a regular sight. You can actually walk to the base of an avalanche area. The family running the place is very friendly, and they offer a fireside spot by the office all day and into the evening. Wifi was okay, the rest rooms are portapotties, but they do have shower houses. Best of all, the surrounding area has many walking and biking trails. One goes by a fishing area with many rainbow trout. The other is the Trail of Blue Ice which can be walked or biked for 4.5 miles to Portage Lake center. I rode it and met up with a moose and calf - fun stuff. We highly recommend this campground as a central location to visit Girdwood, Alyeska, and Whittier. We camped at Portage Valley Cabins & RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Showers are pristine. Toilets: none available except portable. Wifi is poor, so if that is important, I would stay elsewhere. The spots are level, as the campground is basically one gravel parking lot. Water/Electric only, no sewer. We camped at Portage Valley Cabins & RV Park in a Motorhome.

This RV park is basically a big gravel parking lot. There are a few back-in sites at the edge of the campground that have grass and fire rings. Wi-Fi works good if your site is fairly near the office. The real draw for this place is the setting which is just beautiful! It is also conveniently located to Whittier from which we took a day cruise. Price seemed to me to be steep for what we got. The staff was friendly and helpful. We would stay here again if we needed the water and electric hook ups. We camped at Portage Valley Cabins & RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

This is a nice park. Setting is perfect....quiet, creek side, picnic tables and fire rings. Nice, free showers, but only 2 for the whole park. They are located in a building near the office, but there are no sinks, just shower, and signage that directs no hair styling within the building. Porta potty johns for toilets. Our site was creek side. Very nice full hook up. There is a hut with community bonfire At night. But for the price, I expect more amenities. We camped at Portage Valley Cabins & RV Park in a Motorhome.

Nice mountain view as the site is located in a valley. Hot shower available with no extra cost. Have 2 shower booths simple but clean. We did not use the toilet because it is a temporary booth type, not a flush toilet. Small size with only 40 sites. Nice owner. Wifi work quite good. We camped at Portage Valley Cabins & RV Park in a Motorhome.

Rough, gravel entry road; level, gravel sites; not too tight. Covered community campfire; they have a bonfire every night. Nearby creek and mountain views. Convenient location to visit Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, and Portage Valley trails & glaciers. We would stay here again. We camped at Portage Valley Cabins & RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a quiet, clean park to stay. It is a large, level gravel parking lot. Only W/E sites with dump available. The area is lovely, Glacier view, hiking trails, nice area to walk the pup. Their wifi is spotty, Sprint phone OK. There are only Porta Potty's to use. Only 2 showers. The fire pit area is nice. For the price we thought the amenities were limited. We would stay here again if passing through. We camped at Portage Valley Cabins & RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

As we pulled in, we noted it was surrounded by mountains. We also noticed the totally awesome fire pit structure. It reminded me of a large yurt with sides comprised of split firewood. It was the perfect gathering and meeting place. Plenty of room for a ton of people. BBQ pits were provided for those that wanted to cook their foods or catch of the day. Super close to fishing streams, hiking trails, and glacier beauty. They had free Wi-Fi, some cute cabins to accommodate non camper/RV's, nice FREE (2) spacious shower rooms that can be locked for privacy. Wall mounted heater if needed. Also, I noticed some reviewers were here before water had been hooked up. The 1st row now has water. All spots had electric. They have also added more picnic tables to the sites. We were lucky the group was not far away and we were able to call them to come see if this was a suitable campsite for all. Needless to say they Loved it just as much as we did. We loved it so much this is where we chose to spend our last night before we all had to leave. We will be back on our next trip to Alaska. We camped at Portage Valley Cabins & RV Park in a Motorhome.

This was a great park that was recommended by another traveler. Surrounded by mountains and streams, it was very picturesque. A large tent with a fire that burns every night. People gather for happy hour and you get to know your neighbors. The owner was very helpful and joined the guests around the fire. We would have stayed longer but we had reservations on the ferry to Valdez. I give it a 9 only because our WiFi didn't work--otherwise, it's a 10. Didn't use the restrooms and showers. We camped at Portage Valley Cabins & RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

We were forced to use this campground when we found another one full. Basically a total rip-off. $40 for an electric only site. Porta-potty with no toilet paper for a rest room. Wi-fi that worked for about 30 minutes during the 20 or so hours we stayed there. No one at the office - so no way to reset the Wi-Fi, or direct you to a site. Cell service (At&T) non-existent (but not the fault of the park). We camped at Portage Valley Cabins & RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

These people could not be nicer. They keep a campfire burning (just like Motel Six has a light on) and when you arrive they talk to you like you are family. Clean sites and easy to pull through or back into to...great! Easy to access dump. They just added some sites with water. If you need a "site for the night" or a great place to explore the glaciers this IS the place to go, check out this park. Easy access to good fishing. They even started providing live music on the weekends. If you have not been there this year be sure and put it on your list for next year! Clean and safe and right in our backyard. Only 40 miles from Anchorage and 1.7 miles off the highway. We camped at Portage Valley Cabins & RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.
